In accordance with instructions received from the Council of the Society, I have been engaged during the past year (1893) in getting together a fairly representative series of photographs of the sculptured stones of Scotland with symbols and Celtic ornament, earlier than A.D. 1100. I trust, however, that the work will not stop here, and that the Society will be impressed with the desirability of carrying out a systematic photographic survey, not only of the sculptured stones, but of the antiquities of Scotland generally. A small proportion of these are quite suitable for reproduction as illustrations of the proposed work on the Early Christian Monuments, an dI woul d suggest that permission shoul e obtaine b de thos us eo t d marked with an asterisk. As so few photographs were already available, it was obviously necessary to have the greater part of the stones, more particularly those in remote districts, taken specially. (4) That with regard to the colour of the surface of the stone, when free from lichen, &c., yellowish or whitish sandstone is the best (as, for instance, the Gollieburn Stone at Dunrobin), next to this blueish or greenish whinstone (lik e Keitth e h Halld Stone)re l worsd al an f , o t sandstone (like'the Eosemarkie Stonegranitd re r o )e (lik e Maideeth n Stone). (5) That with regard to the texture of the surface, the more even it is the better, granite being especially difficult to photograph on account of the large shining crystals, which scatter the light and obscure the sculpture. ments than it is possible to get in any other way, and when a monument has been destroyed a photograph of it becomes almost invaluable. I would therefore urge upon the Society the desirability of forming a com-- plete collectio f photographno f Scottisso h antiquities. Amateurd an s others woul doubo n d t give valuable assistanc thin ei s directio f nthei y received some encouragement and advice from the Society. Next, with regard to utilising the photographs of the monuments for purposes of illustration by direct reproduction or otherwise. The object of illustrating the monuments is twofold—(1) to show their general appearanc d surroundings an o eshot e detail ) wth (2 f o sd an , casy ean sculpturee whern th i t photogrape eth Bu reproducee .b o t s hi d direct it is absolutely essential that the negative should be sharp and of the best quality, so that it is only possible to use a limited number of selected specimens for this purpose. In reproducing photographs by the half-tone process, where the grain is given by a network of fine lines crossin t righa g t angles s weli o remembet t i l, r e thae scalth th f t o e details should bear a certain proportion to the quality of the grain. The smaller the grain in comparison with the size of the details the better, as half-tone th e engravings wilt beano l r magnifying d becoman , e coarser and coarser as they are enlarged. Photographs reproduced by the photo- gravure, collotype, autotype, and numerous other processes, will bear magnifying d shoan , w much finer details tha half-tone nth e blockst bu , they are much more expensive, and have to be printed as plates instead blocks oa f s amongs e letterpressth t . Photographs which are not good enough to be reproduced direct may enlargee b touched handy an b dp d u wit hChinesd Indiaan k nein white, so as to bring out the details, and then be again reduced. Another method is to transfer the photograph to a wood block and add the details in pencil before it is engraved. Even when a photograph is not of much use alone, it may help to make a good drawing when a rubbing and measurements of the stone have been taken.
