G. R. Mackintosh today began suit against J. B. Locke for $1904.65, which he claims is due for work done as a stone cutter. He says in the petition that he and several other men made a contract with Locke for cutting big stones for the abutments of a bridge at West Fifth Street. According to the contract the rough stones were to be of a certain size. But when the work was begun it was found that they were much larger than had been agreed on and required more cutting away.

On complaining to Locke, Mackintosh received the answer that Locke would pay for the extra work. Some help was furnished but not all that was necessary. When the work was done the stone cutters had an account against Locke that aggregated @$1904.65, for what they had done in addition to the contract stipulations. Mackintosh says he bought the claims of the other men and now he sues to recover the full amount." 20. Hi Jeff,

It makes sense now...... Moray Place is in Elgin according to the attached information you've sent. I automatically thought it was Nairn. It is my earnest wish that you have family still in Nairn that we can find for you. another thought Lachlan did not come from monied people. Its obvious that he had a benefactor I wonder if he also helped him start his trade in Elgin. In the 1800s. Nairn was under the umbrella of Moray and Nairn (you would have noticed that doing your research) Could this benefactor have connections with the wool trade and Elgin. His father was a shepherd and was a very old established farm makes you wonder, Were the socks knitted for Lachlan?

Research Notes: Husband - Angus MACKINTOSH Nairn, a parish at the mouth of the river just mentioned, on the sea-coast, in the NW of Nairnshire. It is bounded N by the ; E by the parishes of , a detached portion of , Auldearn, and ; SW by the parish of Cawdor and the parish of Croy and Dalcross; and W by Inverness-. The boundary line is almost entirely artificial and highly irregular, the parish being formed by a compact portion on the N-measuring 5 miles from E to W, and 2 miles from N to S-from the SE corner of which a long, straggling projection, varying in breadth from 1 to 1½ mile, runs S for 3 miles to the Burn of Blarandualt. The area is 9387.261 acres, including 86.864 of water, 454.764 of foreshore, and 19.085 of tidal water. The surface slopes from the sea-beach till it reaches, along the S of the parish, a height of 120 feet, and in the southern prolongation already mentioned it reaches, at Hill of Urchany, a height of over 700 feet. Almost the whole of the surface is under cultivation or woodland. The soil about Kildrummie on the S, round the town of Nairn, and along the coast is sandy and light; along the river it is sand mixed with clay; and throughout most of the southern district it is a good rich loam. The underlying rock is Old Red sandstone. The drainage is effected by the river Nairn, which has a course of 4 miles along the centre and towards the E of the parish and by Lochdhu Burn, which, rising in the SW, has a course of 3 miles, first E and then N, till it reaches the sea 1¾ mile W of the mouth of the Nairn. Close to the town of Nairn, on the SW, is the poorhouse for the Nairn Poor-law Combination, which includes the parishes of Abernethy, Ardclach, Ardersier, Auldearn, Cawdor, Cromdale, Croy, Duthil, Dyke, Edinkillie, Nairn, and Petty. It is a plain building, with accommodation for 75 paupers, and the average number of inmates is about 45. Besides Kilravock Castle and Geddes House, which are separately noticed, the mansions are Achareidh, Fir Hall, Househill, Larkfield House, Ivybank, Millbank, Newton, and Viewfield. Geddes is associated with the name of John Mackintosh (1822-51), 'The Earnest Student,' the story of whose life has been so gracefully told by Dr Norman Macleod. At Geddes House once stood a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but which appears in the Ordnance Survey Map under the somewhat unrecognisable title of St Warn's Chapel. No remains of it are now to be seen, but the site and the surrounding ground is still used as a churchyard, and it is the burial-place of the family of Kilravock, by whom the chapel was founded at least as early as the first half of the 13th century. In the 15th century it was held in high repute for sanctity, and in 1475 Pope Sextus IV. granted relief from 100 days' penance to all who made pilgrimage to it at certain festivals, or contributed a certain amount to the repair of the building. Threequarters of a mile E of Geddes House are the ruins of Rait Castle, anciently the seat of the Mackintoshes of Rait, and prior to that of a branch of the Cumyns, and also, it is said, of the family of Rait of Rait, which disappeared from the county in the end of the 14th century, and became, according to Shaw in his History of the Province of Moray, the founders of the family of Rait of Halgreen in . The last of the Nairn family was, according to the same authority, Sir Alexander Rait, who, between 1395 and 1400, murdered the then thane of Cawdor. There seems also to have been at an early date a chapel here dedicated to the Virgin Mary; for incidental mention is made in 1343 of 'the hermit of the chapel of St Mary of Rait.' Close to the castle are the remains of an old British fort, called Castle-Findlay. The parish is traversed in the N for 5¼ miles by the main coast road from Inverness to Aberdeen, and also for 4¼ miles by the Inverness and Forres section of the Railway system with a station at Nairn.

General Notes: Wife - Margaret RALPH Who was Margaret RALPH McIntosh and What Do We Know About Her?

My grandmother, Louise Douglas MACKINTOSH Rader (1887-1962) told me years ago that her Great Grandmother was Margaret RALPH. So I have been looking for Margaret for some time in an attempt to tie her into my MACKINTOSH (with spelling variations) line. What I have learned so far follows:

On the 24th of August 1873 at 9 h 30 min P.M. Margaret died in Nairn, a Pauper, the widow of Angus McIntosh, Shepherd. This event occurred at the Nairn Mission Poor House in the Parish of Nairn and was reported by William Munro, Governor. She was a Female, 84 years of age, the daughter of William RALPH, Fisherman (deceased) and Janet Ralph, M.S. McIntosh (deceased). She died of old age as was certified by C. Alexander, M.D. William D. Penny (?) registered the death event, Registrar on September 1st, at Nairn. URL for Poorhouse is http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Nairn/Nairn.shtml

The accuracy of a death certificate documents the death. The other "facts" need to be proven. If Margaret was about 84 years old at the time of her death she would have been born about 1789.

There is recorded in the Old Parish Records for Births and Baptisms dated 5 June 1791 under Ralph the following: June 5 th William Ralph in Town and Janet McIntosh his wife had a child baptized named Margaret…. this is recorded in the Parish of Nairn and County of Nairn.

And there is in the Old Parish Records a marriage recorded between Angus McIntosh, a laborer in Nairn and Margaret Raff in the Parish of Inverness by the Rev. Alex. Rose dated 30 Nov 1824.

The Old Parish Records Index for Births and Christenings has recorded on the 1st of October 1825 the baptism of Lauchlan McIntosh whose parents were Angus McIntosh and Margaret Ralph which event took place in Nairn. Lauchlan was born the 28th of September. Angus is a Shepard at Kildrummie.

One can follow Lauchlan in the 1871 and 1891 census records where he has moved to Elgin and is a tweed merchant. (And that makes sense since his dad was a Shepard.)

Margaret can be found in the 1871 census for Nairn as a boarder at 2 Wellington Square whose occupation was "formerly stocking knitter". (And that makes sense since her husband was a Shepard!) She is recorded as born in Nairn, Nairnshire.

From Irene Mackintosh in Nairn 24 March 2006:

Some more information for you. The witnesses to Margarets baptism were Alexander Falconer and Margaret Peterkin. Now have the aeriel view of Wellington Square. In 1841 Margaret was living at 20 King Street. Will try and find this house if its still standing or take a photograph as it is today . Kildrummie Farm photograph and will be in Inverness soon and will go into the Archives of the Poorhouse and photocopy any relevant information about Margaret. Have now found where the ground is in the local cemetry for poorhouse interments. Once I have all the info. will get it scanned and sent to you.

Dear Jeff,

Great reading !!!!!

I am doing some research at the moment with the old Nairn Burgh Records from 1819 and came accross an entry well into the 1800s which immediately I was excited about.

The Burgh had agreed to donate £10 a year to the school and as they had reached a figure of £50 was putting forward a Lachlan McIntosh to be educated free gratis I wonder if this is your Lachlan. Its very early in the morning and I am about to get the breakfasts on the go so will look at my notes later and give you the exact extract from the records. I think it was for the Academy which had a wonderful reputation for education.

Maybe you could let me know when Lachlan was born then I would know if he would have been the right age. Not many Lachlans in Nairn.

Hope all is well. Kindest regards, Irene.

Hi Jeff,

From my notes :-

4th. April 1839

The council proceeded to appoint nominees to be educated free gratis at the Academy when Lachlan McIntosh was appointed to the Nairn Academy and William Roy to the Monitory School. This would make Lachlan 14 an ideal age for the Academy.

The Education Act of Scotland came into force in 1872 when every child in Scotland had to be educated it was compulsory. Prior to 1872 in the Nairn Burgh the wealthy merchants, ship owners &c. subscribed yearly to a school (The Academy) and depending on how much they paid could nominate a pupil that maybe showed promise for education free gratis to the family. The Local Burgh donated £10 a year to the Academy. I honestly think its your Lachlan as his Mum was left with the two boys and certainly could not have afforded to educate him. He could have attended the sessional school or monitory school (primary) under the same free gratis policy if someone on the Board of Directors took a shine to him and thought he would be ideal to further his studies in the Academy. Lachlan did he not become a tweed merchant in Elgin.? Must have had some education to be able to run a business. Nairn Academy was founded in 1796 by a Captain Rose RN who paid for the building and was very generous in donations to it and when he died left his house and a considerable sum of money and a large piece of ground that the present Rosebank Primary School stands. It was Roses Academical Institution when Ken and I went and became a primary school when the town built a new academy.

I have been in touch with a very old Nairnite who is Watson to name and previous to the 1940's there were only 4 families of Watson in Nairn. Two we know did not live in Moray Place there was a Dr. Watson and a Joe Watson who lived up Balblair Road (Where the poorhouse was). Maybe if you could get an idea of when your cousin visited Nairn we could look at the valuation rolls of all properties in the town and maybe get a lead about the family.

All for now, Kind regards, Irene.

His father was a shepherd and Kildrummie was a very old established farm makes you wonder, Were the socks knitted for Lachlan?

Happy researching, Irene.

His wife came from Elgin and was Ann and they had a daughter Margaret and son Galloway ..... they would have been called after his Mother and brother !!!!!!! Got this details off the 1851 census. Hope this is of interest to you. His occupation was a Master Tailor employing 1 man. his son Galloway was 9months old and born in Wick. Margaret his daughter was born in Elgin she was two years old.as was his wife born in Elgin. Lauchlen was born in Nairn. You can assume that they went North to try and make a life, but it would look that they eventually went back to Elgin and started their tweed business. Best wishes Irene.

Moray and Nairn Express, Saturday, December 26, 1908, page 4, column 6: LATE MR L. MACKINTOSH, ELGIN Another old Elgin citizen in the personality of Mr. Lachlan Mackintosh, retired tweed manufacturer, passed away at this residence, Moray Place, Elgin, on Sunday, in his 84th year. The disabilities of advancing age necessitated Mr. Mackintosh's retiral from active business a number of years ago, and for some time he had lived the secluded life of an invalid. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Mackintosh was a well known figure in the community and although a native of the town, he identified himself with all its interests and enjoyed an extensive knowledge of its history. Originally hailing from Nairnshire, Mr. Mackintosh came to Elgin over half a century ago, and ultimately set up in business for himself as a clothier in Commerce Street. After giving up this business, he started a wholesale tweed establishment, which proved very successful and secured a very wide connection. Latterly the business he founded has been successfully carried on by his son, Mr. H. B. Mackintosh. When the volunteers were started Mr. Mackintosh was one of the original members, and took a leading part in their formation in Elgin. He was keenly interested in the movement and with his customary zeal threw himself into the work, and he was wont to recall with pride the position the Morayshire Volunteers took at the first Royal Review at Edinburgh in 1860. Some thirty years ago higher education was at low ebb in Elgin. Mr. Mackintosh viewed this state of matters with concern, as he desired above most things to see the fame of the city as an educational centre preserved as it stood in the days when pupils came "from the ends of the earth" to be educated here. Along with a few gentlemen, he started the Elgin Educational Institute-now the Station Hotel-which for a number of years did good work under its first headmaster, Professor Saintsbury, who has since become famous in literature. The Institute continued to flourish under his successors, and was only discontinued when the work was taken up under the new regime of School Boards. For a term of six years Mr. Mackintosh was a member of the Elgin Town Council and took a very real and practical interest in the progress of the town. It was a time of municipal stress when the Amenities Association was in existence, and Mr. Mackintosh was warmly interested in its work. It was largely through his instrumentality that Lossie Green and the river bank in its vicinity became what they are to-day, and the east and west end drinking fountains were placed where they are largely through his efforts. Mr. Mackintosh likewise took a special interest in the Bishop's Palace, and a number of years before it was transferred to the care of the Town Council, the building was strengthened and part of its roofed in through his exertions. For many years he was also convener of the Six Incorporated Trades of Elgin, and was fully conversant with all the old records of the various crafts. Mr. Mackintosh possessed cultured and literary tastes, and was particularly fond of collecting old records and curiosities. The Fruit of his knowledge in this direction was a popular local guide entitled "Elgin: Past and Present." In this volume he took pardonable pride in telling how he discovered Elgin's long lost coat-of-arms. Knowing from his historical knowledge the important position occupied by Elgin in the north in bygone days, Mr. Mackintosh felt confident that the town possessed a coat-of-arms, and through his initiative inquires were made at the Lyon King-at-Arms, Edinburgh. That official, after searching the records, could find no trace of any such coat-of-arms having been registered. Mr. Mackintosh was not defeated, however. Search was made in the town cadget, an old chest, where local records are kept, and there, sure enough, discovered the blazon of the arms of the city, where it had lain for about two hundred years. Along with the coat-of-arms was found the receipt for its registrations. The Town Council passed a vote of thanks to Mr. Mackintosh for the trouble he had taken in the matter, and presented him with a copy of the coat-of-arms, signed by the then chief magistrate, Provost Black. Mr. Mackintosh more than once received the formal thanks of the town Council for disinterested services rendered to the town. It is interesting to note that the present seal of the Elgin as designed by Mr. Mackintosh. When the council came into existence in 1890, a seal was, of course, an absolute necessity. Mr. Mackintosh's design was unanimously accepted, and the County Council presented him with a copy bearing the thanks of the Council above the signature of the convener who at that time was Mr. J Grand-Peterkin. In the Elgin Museum he was also warmly interested, and by his demise Elgin has lost a noted antiquarian whose advice was asked by for and near. Mr. Mackintosh was an ardent supporter of the State Church, and in politics a staunch Conservative. It is an indication of his popularity that although standing as an avowed Conservative in what was considered a Radical stronghold, Mr. Mackintosh on the two occasions upon which he was returned to the Town council, was at the top of the poll. The funeral took place to the Elgin Cemetery on Wednesday, and was largely attended.

In 1854 a 23 year-old G. R. McIntosh boarded the Ship Adirondack to sail to America. He arrived in New York City about the 27th of May and must have headed west immediately as we next find him in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa in the 1856 State census and filing his Declaration of Intention to become a United States citizen. The Ship Adirondack's manifest lists his occupation as joiner. He would practice the stone mason profession his entire life.

The challenge is trying to find his place in Scotland for the ship's manifest, the Declaration of Intention and all the U. S. census records only indicate a Scotland origin. My grandmother, Louise Douglas MACKINTOSH Rader (1887-1962) told me years ago that Galloway's mother was Margaret RALPH and his father a Galloway Mackintosh. So I headed to Scotland to find them or at least records about them in June 2006! And here is where the fun begins. I meet some terrific people in Nairn and at the Nairn Museum (Mr. John Rosemiller), where I suspect the McIntosh/Mackintosh family might have its origins along with the Ralph families.

Good news: I did find a Margaret Ralph/RAFF who married an Angus McIntosh in Inverness registered on the 30th of November 1824 and saw their record at the Registry House in Edinburgh as well as at the Nairn Museum. They baptized a child, Lauchlan, on the 1st of October 1825 in Nairn. He was born on the 28th of September. At the time of marriage Angus was a laborer living in Kildrummie and at the time of baptism he was a Shepard. There are many Ralph families in the Nairn area in the Fishertown district. I could find no other baptisms for any other children in the Nairn or other adjacent parishes for Angus and Margaret.

And then the good news is that Margaret, Lachlan and Galloway are found in the 1841 census for Nairn! One can follow Lauchlan in the 1871 and 1891 census records where he has moved to Elgin and is a tweed merchant. (And that makes sense since his dad was a Shepard.) His mother Margaret can be found in the 1871 census as a boarder whose occupation was "formerly stocking knitter". (And that makes sense since her husband was a Shepard!)

Margaret dies 24 August 1873 (a pauper) and the informant was a William Munro who was the "governor" of the Nairn Poor House in the Parish of Nairn. The death certificate is clear that she is the widow of Angus McIntosh, Shepard. It states her parents as William Ralph, Fisherman and her mother as Jane McINTOSH Ralph both of whom were deceased. However the accuracy is questionable in a death certificate about the parent's names. Margaret was 84 years old at her death (but only 76 in the 1871 census!)

I can report that about 30 July 1857 Galloway married Mary A. Atkinson (born in Ohio 1837) in Des Moines and they raised eight children.

First born is a son Lachlan (sound familiar?) on 24 Nov 1857 and my great grandfather who would marry Louisa Jane PIERSON. He would die in New York City in 1917. His body was brought to Chicago for cremation and a gravestone placed amongst the Pierson's in Carlisle, Iowa. Their only daughter, Louise, was my grandmother.

In March 1859 a daughter Jennie was born who married David TALBOT and settled in the Seattle area of Washington. They had a daughter Nellie.

About 1862 John was born and married twice first to Mamie O'BRIEN (???-1899) and to an Ada PAGE.

Daughter Anna was next born in 1864 and died 7 August 1879 in Des Moines. She is buried at Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines.

Another daughter Mary is born 29 June 1868 and she married Jacob HARPEL (1849-1943). And they had a son Ralph Mackintosh Harpel.

A son, Ralph Ernest, is born 12 Jan 1871 in Des Moines and he married Edith HARRIS (1878-1962). Ralph died in Los Angeles, CA 22 Jan 1945. They had two sons.

The last child is Grace Ellen born April 1874. She married Fred A. COPE (1870-1916) and raised two daughters. Grace died 7 Oct 1957 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Dear Jeff,

Was again researching for our Mackintosh and turned up the following :-

1851 census. Nairn Royal Burgh. Folio 95 Page3 Schedule 18 Address 123 High Street Nairn.

Mackintosh Margaret Head Widow F. 50 Grocer born nairn. Mackintosh Galloway Son U M20 Masons Apprentice born Nairn.

This must be your Galloway. Lauchlin was married up in Wick to a wife born in Elgin with a son Galloway and daughter Margaret. Interesting ???

Will find out where 123 High Street is but it is this end of the Town.

All for now,
