VI A UT VIRTUTE. I VERNESS A. & W. MACKENZIE. MDCCCXCI. I INSCRIBED TO THE MEMORY OF MARY CHISHOLM OF CHISHOLM (AFTERWARDS MRS. JAMES GOODEN, LONDON), A noble-souled woman, whose warm-hearted and patriotic conduct towards her father's and, subsequently, her mother's tenants in Strathglass, under the most trying circumstances, first attracted the author's attention to her clan, and without whose inspiration this book would never have been written. PREFACE. :o:- The History of the Chisholms, as given in this volume, is not an ambitious work. The materials are not extensive, and those available are not of an important or stirring character. I claim to have disposed of the absurd and ground- less contention, so long maintained by the Northern clan, that they sprang originally from the Earls of Caithness and Orkney, and to have established, on the contrary, that they first came to the Highlands from the Scottish Borders, and that all the families of the name, north and south, can trace their descent to one common ancestor, heard of for the first time in Scotland in the county of Roxburgh towards the end of the thirteenth century. I am indebted to various friends for assistance, but above all others to Mr. Colin Chisholm, Namur Cottage, Inverness, whose interesting Traditions of Strathglass and genealogical storehouse I have freely and profitably drawn upon. • Introduction the Place-Names in This Book Were Collected As Part of The
Introduction The place-names in this book were collected as part of the Arts and Humanities Research Board-funded (AHRB) ‘Norse-Gaelic Frontier Project, which ran from autumn 2000 to summer 2001, the full details of which will be published as Crawford and Taylor (forthcoming). Its main aim was to explore the toponymy of the drainage basin of the River Beauly, especially Strathglass,1 with a view to establishing the nature and extent of Norse place-name survival along what had been a Norse-Gaelic frontier in the 11th century. While names of Norse origin formed the ultimate focus of the Project, much wider place-name collection and analysis had to be undertaken, since it is impossible to study one stratum of the toponymy of an area without studying the totality. The following list of approximately 500 names, mostly with full analysis and early forms, many of which were collected from unpublished documents, has been printed out from the Scottish Place-Name Database, for more details of which see Appendix below. It makes no claims to being comprehensive, but it is hoped that it will serve as the basis for a more complete place-name survey of an area which has hitherto received little serious attention from place-name scholars. Parishes The parishes covered are those of Kilmorack KLO, Kiltarlity & Convinth KCV, and Kirkhill KIH (approximately 240, 185 and 80 names respectively), all in the pre-1975 county of Inverness-shire. The boundaries of Kilmorack parish, in the medieval diocese of Ross, first referred to in the medieval record as Altyre, have changed relatively little over the centuries.

The project will assist SNH’s environmental audit work by providing an overview of trends in strategic development across Scotland. MAIN FINDINGS Development plans post 1998 were reviewed to ensure up-to-date and relevant information.

  • BCS Paper 2016/28 2018 Review of UK Parliament Constituencies Appendix a Midlothian and Scottish Borders Council Areas Existing Constituencies
Boundary Commission for Scotland BCS Paper 2016/28 2018 Review of UK Parliament Constituencies Constituency considerations for Midlothian and Scottish Borders council areas Action required 1. The Commission is invited to consider alternative designs of constituencies for Midlothian and Scottish Borders council areas in furtherance of its 2018 Review of UK Parliament constituencies. Background 2. On 24 February 2016, the Commission began its 2018 Review of UK Parliament constituencies with a view to making its recommendations by October 2018 in tandem with the other UK parliamentary boundary commissions. 3. The review is being undertaken in compliance with the Parliamentary Constituencies Act 1986, as amended. The Act stipulates a UK electoral quota of 74,769.2 electors and use of the parliamentary electorate figures from the December 2015 Electoral Register. The 5% electorate limits in the Act correspond to an electorate of no less than 71,031 and no more than 78,507. 4. The Act requires the Commission to recommend the name, extent and designation of constituencies in Scotland, of which there are to be 53 in total. 2 Scottish constituencies are prescribed in the Act: Orkney and Shetland Islands constituency and Western isles constituency. 5. The Act provides some discretion in the extent of the Commission’s regard to the size, shape and accessibility of constituencies, existing constituencies and the breaking of local ties. As this review is considered to be the first following enactment of the legislation (the 6th Review was ended before completion in 2013 following enactment of the Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013) the Commission need not have regard to the inconveniences attendant on changes to constituencies.

Introduction The records listed in this volume are what might be described as central records of the College – the minute books, the registers, the statutes and similar material, generated directly by the Provost and Fellows and the New Governing Body. There are, however, equally central records listed elsewhere. The Foundation and Consolidation Charters, and other royal charters, were listed by Noel Blakiston as ECR 39. He included other central records, particularly relating to the building of the College, in ECR 38 and ECR 49. Accounting records to 1642, including the audit rolls up to 1505, when they were replaced by books, are listed as ECR 61 and later accounting records as ECR 62. Papers produced by individual Provosts, Vice-Provosts and Fellows (though there are very few of this last category) will be found as COLL/P, COLL/VP or COLL/FELL as appropriate. The papers of officers such as the Bursar (COLL/B), Registrar(COLL/REG) and other College servants are also separately listed. The catalogue of the College’s archives (now COLL/ARCH/1) compiled in 1724 by Thomas Martin (1697 – 1771) mentions the central records that existed at the time but does not list them individually. Binding, indexing and annotation of the registers in particular show clearly that their importance and value were recognised. Seal books, minute books and lease books were also carefully preserved. However, unbound papers were less well served by a storage system that was essentially organised by estate and were allowed to accumulate in considerable confusion until very roughly sorted by Noel Blakiston into boxes covering ten year periods.

This was primarily due to its strategic importance as the northern gateway into the Hebrides to the west, and Caithness and Sutherland to the north. The power derived from the earldom’s strategic situation was enhanced by the status of its earls. From 1215 to 1372 the earldom was ruled by an uninterrupted MacTaggart comital dynasty which was able to capitalise on this longevity to establish itself as an indispensable authority in Scotland north of the Forth.
