  • “The Irish Resonances in Sterne's Tristram Shandy”
This PRE-PUBLICATION version was delivered at the University of Liverpool on 4 July 2012, as part of Intersections: An Irish Studies Symposium. An earlier version was delivered at the ASECS Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX on 23 March 2012. For the ‘official’, published version, please see The Irish Review 52.1 (Summer 2016): 15-26. “The Irish References in Sterne’s Tristram Shandy” By Dr. David Clare Laurence Sterne has always occupied an uncertain place within the Irish literary canon. Important commentators have consistently denied that his work is, in any significant way, Irish. Referring to the fact that the Tipperary-born Sterne was the son of an English soldier stationed in Ireland, Arthur Clery famously stated that “To call Sterne an Irishman is the mere pedantry of birth administration”.1 W.B. Yeats contended that Sterne’s Tristram Shandy should not be included in a canon of “national Irish literature” because it fails to reflect the nation’s “Celtic” traditions and character.2 Seminal surveys of Irish literature, including Declan Kiberd’s Irish Classics (2000), Norman Vance’s Irish Literature: A Social History (1999), and Joep Leerssen’s Mere Irish and Fíor-Ghael (1986), do not mention Sterne at all, even in passing, and, although Derek Hand writes incisively about Sterne in his study, A History of the Irish Novel (2011), he makes the unnecessarily extreme (and untrue) caveat that Sterne placed “no emphasis on his Irish roots whatsoever”.3 When the occasional commentator does attempt to reclaim Sterne for Ireland, they often fail to use rigorous, textual demonstration, and instead focus on the thematic and stylistic similarities that he shares with other Irish writers.

Introduction The records listed in this volume are what might be described as central records of the College – the minute books, the registers, the statutes and similar material, generated directly by the Provost and Fellows and the New Governing Body. There are, however, equally central records listed elsewhere. The Foundation and Consolidation Charters, and other royal charters, were listed by Noel Blakiston as ECR 39. He included other central records, particularly relating to the building of the College, in ECR 38 and ECR 49. Accounting records to 1642, including the audit rolls up to 1505, when they were replaced by books, are listed as ECR 61 and later accounting records as ECR 62. Papers produced by individual Provosts, Vice-Provosts and Fellows (though there are very few of this last category) will be found as COLL/P, COLL/VP or COLL/FELL as appropriate. The papers of officers such as the Bursar (COLL/B), Registrar(COLL/REG) and other College servants are also separately listed. The catalogue of the College’s archives (now COLL/ARCH/1) compiled in 1724 by Thomas Martin (1697 – 1771) mentions the central records that existed at the time but does not list them individually. Binding, indexing and annotation of the registers in particular show clearly that their importance and value were recognised. Seal books, minute books and lease books were also carefully preserved. However, unbound papers were less well served by a storage system that was essentially organised by estate and were allowed to accumulate in considerable confusion until very roughly sorted by Noel Blakiston into boxes covering ten year periods.

DOI: 5 The Clergy at the Courts of George I and George II STEPHEN TAYLOR In the years between the Reformation and the revolution of 1688 the court lay at the very heart of English religious life. Court bishops played an important role as royal councillors in matters concerning both church and commonwealth. 1 Royal chaplaincies were sought after, both as important steps on the road of prefer- ment and as positions from which to influence religious policy.2 Printed court sermons were a prominent literary genre, providing not least an important forum for debate about the nature and character of the English Reformation.

  • E of the National Synod of Dordrecht, the Tendency for W Many 1S to Associate That Name with the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands During the Early 17Th Century
hen m~ntion is ma?e of the national Synod of Dordrecht, the tendency for W many 1s to associate that name with the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands during the early 17th century. To do so is certainly not incorrect, but it should be borne in mind that that Synod was in certain respects unique so far as the assemblies of Reformed churches are concerned. Unlike any of the other great Reformed assemblies, it gathered together representatives of virtually all of the Reformed churches in Europe. In that respect it stands alone and deserves a pecu liar place in the history of the Reformed churches. The divines who met at Dordt on the 13th November 1618 constituted a remark able array of talent and background. The ranks of those who attended at Dort included fifty-six ministers and ruling elders from the Dutch churches, five Professors of Theology, and twenty-six foreign divines, as well as eighteen political commissioners who were not members of the Synod but who were to supervise the proceedings and report to the States-General. The foreign divines included repre sentatives from the Reformed churches of Great Britain, the Palatinate, Hessia, Switzerland, Wetteravia, Geneva, Bremen, and Emden. Delegates from France were also invited, but were prevented from. attending by their king. Consequently, this Synod was unlike any other within the Reformed church world. As a Synod, it has enjoyed high praise. Richard Baxter places this Synod on the same footing as the Westminster Assembly of Divines. Speaking of the Westminster Assembly, Baxter observes: "The Divines there Congregate were Men of Eminent Learning and Godliness, and Ministerial Abilities and Fidelity: and .

To a number of these, references are given in the text. But I wish to acknowledge how much I owe to the very careful and original research provided by Professor Willis, in his "Architectural History of the Cathedral"; by Precentor Walcott, in his "Early Statutes" of Chichester; and Dean Stephen, in his "Diocesan History." The footnotes, which refer to the latter work, indicate the pages in the smaller edition. But the volume could never have been completed without the great help given to me on many occassions by Prebendary Bennett. His deep and intimate knowledge of the cathedral structure and its history was always at my disposal. It is to him, as well as to Dr. Codrington and Mr. Gordon P.G. Hills, I am still further indebted for much help in correcting the proofs and for many valuable suggestions. H.C.C. C O N T E N T S. CHAP. PAGE I. Notebooks 18 iii Introductory note This collection of papers of Thomas Fitzpatrick, novelist, historian and school teacher, is overwhelmingly concerned with Fitzpatrick’s preoccupation with seventeenth century Ireland, and in particular with the rebellion of 1641. It consists mainly of substantial unpublished work on Henry Jones, Sir Phelim O’Neill, and Island Magee; unpublished articles on a slightly wider variety of subjects; much transcript material mainly derived from seventeenth century sources; and a few copies of published articles. With the exception of some material in the lengthy series of notebooks [LA12/40–74], there is nothing derived from Fitzpatrick’s fiction. The collection contains no personal material or correspondence. The provenance of the material is somewhat uncertain but it appears that the papers were given to Robert Dudley Edwards, Professor of Modern Irish History in University College Dublin, by a niece or nephew of Fitzpatrick’s in 1953. The papers were placed initially in the university library.
