The course will examine the development of popular music in Israel from the beginning of the 20th century until the present. We will discuss the complexity of national identity inherent in the study of immigrant and refugee societies, and the power struggle between the different forces involved in the process: the state and its institutions, the people, and the outside world. We will review the course of musical history in Israel, from nationalism and “invented” folk music through the emergence of the Other (“Musiqa Mizrahit”) and the arrival of rock and world music.
