We will discuss the complexity of national identity inherent in the study of immigrant and refugee societies, and the power struggle between the different forces involved in the process: the state and its institutions, the people, and the outside world. We will review the course of musical history in Israel, from nationalism and “invented” folk music through the emergence of the Other (“Musiqa Mizrahit”) and the arrival of rock and world music. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. CLASS ATTENDANCE Attendance is required in all class meetings. More than two unexcused absences will affect your final grade. Students are expected to be familiar with the reading and listening assignments ahead of class and contribute to the discussion. TAKE-HOME ASSIGNMENTS There will be three Take-home assignments during the quarter (see class schedule). The questions for the assignments will be posted on eCommons (commons.ucsc.edu). Students should turn in their assignments through eCommons.
