Paleography and Codicology: A Seminar on Medieval Manuscript Studies Instructor: Timothy C. Graham June 4-28, 2018 Institute for Medieval Studies University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM 87131 Course content Providing a comprehensive orientation to the field of medieval manuscript studies, this seminar is targeted at graduate students and will also be of in- terest to junior faculty who wish to improve their background in the field. Over the four weeks of the seminar, participants will learn to recognize and read a broad range of medieval scripts and will receive a detailed in- troduction to the entire process of manuscript production, from the prepa- ration of parchment or paper through the stages of writing, decorating, correcting, and glossing the text to the binding and storage of the com- pleted codex. Medieval conventions of punctuation and abbreviation will receive special attention, as will specific genres of manuscripts, including Bibles, Books of Hours, maps, calendars, and rolls and scrolls. Partici- pants will also learn how to recognize and interpret the types of evidence that can help to establish a manuscript’s origin and provenance; they will receive a grounding in the conventions of manuscript cataloguing and an introduction to the science of textual editing. The seminar will focus on manuscripts written in Latin; a basic knowledge of Latin is therefore a prerequisite. Format The seminar will meet for formal sessions on four mornings of each week, Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. During the afternoons, the instructor will make himself available for consultation; he will also hold occasional workshops on specific topics and anticipates that partici- pants may wish to meet regularly for guided group transcription sessions. -

Wolf’s History of roman Literature Programme is translated to Spanish since its first edition in 1787. The programme is written in German (not in Latin, as it was usual in this kind of studies), and roman Literature is shown as a national literature. In addition, we study Wolf’s life, his influence in Spain and we offer a commentary on historiographic ideas found in his programme. -
Miscellanea Paris/Alexandros in Homer
MISCELLANEA PARIS/ALEXANDROS IN HOMER AND EURIPIDES The origins of the two names used by Homer for Paris/Alexandros (henceforth 'P/A') have been much discussed by scholars'). The purpose of the present article is not to contribute to the debate about the origins of the two names, but to investigate whether there is any difference in their significance either in Homer or in Euripides. I. J. F. de Jong has argued in a recent issue of this journal that, in the Iliad, Homer consistently uses 'Paris' as P/A's Trojan name and 'Alexan- dros' as his international name2). She writes: "the Greeks and the gods call P/A 'Alexandros', the Trojans 'Paris', except when they are address- ing Greeks. In the narrator text, we find 'Alexandros' when a Greek or divine point of view, 'Paris' when a Trojan point of view is represented. Speaking from his own point of view the narrator mainly uses 'Alexan- dros', but occasionally turns to 'Paris' when he wishes to draw attention to some particular aspect of his character: his Trojan nationality, his per- sonal point of view or his position as son of Priamos"3). The facts are as follows. The name 'Alexandros' is used 45 times altogether in the Iliad, 19 times in direct speech. 'Paris' is used 11 times, twice in direct speech. The compound 'Dusparis' is used twice, both times in direct speech. In direct speech, 'Alexandros' is used ten times by Greeks, six times by Trojans, and three times by gods. All four uses of 'Paris' (including 'Dusparis') in direct speech are by Hector (3.39; 6.280; 13.769; 22.359). -

Cultural heritage The Recovery of manuscripts David RUNDLE ABSTRACT Manuscripts were the cornerstone of humanism. They had been the main vector for transmission of the ancient texts and culture in the Middle Ages. Most of them had nonetheless been lost or forgotten in remote libraries. In order to recover the ancient Greek and Latin texts they favoured, humanists went on a European quest to find these manuscripts. From Italy, at first, humanists travelled all across Europe, visiting convents and libraries, in search of the lost works of Tacitus, Cicero, etc. building and securing the antique legacy of European culture. This treatise dedicated to another prominent manuscript hunter, the pope Nicholas V, is a meditation on the loss of Roman culture. Manuscripts were humanism’s lifeblood, its inspiration and its purpose. The production of new books in a new, or revived, style of Latin and with a new, or revived, presentation on the page was central to their activities. But before they could even be conceived, there needed to be classical texts to be imitated. Behind the humanists’ practices lay an agenda of manuscript recovery all across Europe. They were conscious of themselves as cut off from the classical past and set themselves the challenge of discovering works which had not been seen—they said- —by scholars for centuries. In writing of their achievements in doing this, they exaggerated both their own heroic endeavours and the dire state that preceded them. -

religions Article Islam¯ and Genesis 17: A Study in Scriptural Intertextuality Khaleel Mohammed Department of Religious Studies, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 92182-6062, USA; [email protected] Received: 25 August 2018; Accepted: 17 September 2018; Published: 28 September 2018 Abstract: Abraham Geiger’s 1833 essay launched a particular genre of research that posits foreign etymology for many terms in the Qur’an.¯ Whereas some work has been erudite, others have posited far-fetched concepts to the point where at least one author opines that Aramaic was the original language of the Qur’an.¯ Muslim exegetes have compounded the problem by seeking to interpret the Qur’an¯ on its own, without reference to other Abrahamic scriptures. I argue that Muhammad’s audience understood him clearly since he was using terms that had become part of the Arabic language long before his time. I examine three terms: islam,¯ iman,¯ and d¯ın, showing that the meaning of these words in the Qur’an¯ can be deciphered by reliance on context of usage and intertextuality. To this end, I refer to several verses of the Qur’an¯ as well as of the Hebrew Bible and Talmudic literature. A proper understanding of these words allows us to see Q3:19 and Q5:3 as pluralistic instead of the particularistic interpretation that most exegetes proffer. After heaping together everything I could find about him in the library, I came to the conclusion that I still needed more information. So I decided to embrace my identity as a loyal member of the ‘Internet generation’ and began my virtual journey through the World Wide Web in search of articles on Nepos. -

i 11 Parallel Lives: Plutarch's Lives, Lapo da Castiglionchio the Younger (1405-1438) and the Art of Italian Renaissance Translation CHRISTOPHER S. CELENZA Before his premature death in 1438 of an outbreak of plague in Ferrara, the Florentine humanist and follower of the papal curia Lapo da Castiglionchio the Younger left behind three main bodies of work in Latin, all still either unedited or incompletely edited: his own self-collected letters, a small number of prose treatises, and a sizeable corpus of Greek-to-Latin translations. This paper concerns primarily the last of these three aspects of his work and has as its evidentiary focus two autograph manuscripts that contain inter alia final versions of Lapo's Latin translations of Plutarch's Lives of Themistocles, Artaxerxes, and Aratus. In addition, however, to studying Lapo's translating techniques, this paper will address chiefly the complexities of motivation surrounding Lapo's choice of dedicatees for these translations. The range of circumstances will demonstrate, I hope, the lengths to which a young, little-known humanist had to go to support himself in an environment where there was as yet no real fixed, institutional place for a newly created discipline. Lapo and Translation: Patronage, Theory, and Practice Of the three areas mentioned, Lapo's translations represent the most voluminous part of his oeuvre and in fact it is to his translations that he owes his modem reputation. But why did this young humanist devote so much energy to translating? And why were Plutarch's Lives such an important part of his effort? An earlier version of this paper was delivered as an Oldfather Lecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on 8 November 1996. -
