Immaculate Conception Bulletin The of the Lord www.icelmhurst.org January 3, 2021 2

The blessing of the home on the Epiphany is an invitation to to be a daily guest in our lives and to bless all who come in and out of our home. There will be cards available to take home this weekend which include the following prayer to pray and chalk. The tradition is to write the numbers of the new year over your front door with the chalk. Pictured above are the numbers for 2021. C+M+B are the cross and initials of the Magi: , and . They also abbreviate the Latin phrase Mansionem Benedicat (Christ bless this house). Bless, O Lord God almighty, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the strength of victory, humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who dwell herein. Through Christ our Lord. We encourage you to participate in this activity.

THE PROCLAMATION OF EPIPHANY Dear brothers and sisters, The glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of His return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of . Let us recall the year’s culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: His last supper, His crucifixion, His burial, and His rising celebrated between the evening of the First of April and the evening of the Forth of April. Each Easter – as on each Sunday – the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the Seventeenth of February. The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on the Thirteenth of May. Pentecost, the joyful conclusion of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on the Twenty-Third of May. This year, the First Sunday of will be on the Twenty-Eighth of November. Likewise, the of Church proclaims the Passover of Christ in the feasts of the Holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and , and in the commemoration of the faithful departed. To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of time and history be endless praise, for ever and ever. Amen. Before you leave home: • If you are 65 or older, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions, please consider joining us via our live streaming service. If you have symptoms of any type of illness, please remain at home and be attentive to your health needs. The obligation for Mass attendance is still suspended and will remain so until further notice. Your health and safety is our primary concern. • You will be required to wear a mask/face covering for the duration of our Mass. • A reservation is required for attendance at weekend Masses. Please contact the parish office by Fridays at noon at 630-530-8515 or email [email protected] to secure seating. Your reservation MUST be confirmed by the office. Walk-ups are welcome, but not guaranteed a seat. • Use the restroom before leaving the house. The facilities in the church or chapel must be sanitized after each use. We are striving to minimize their use.

When you arrive for Mass: • Check in with a greeter at the check-in table. • Enter only through the center front doors. • Deposit your offering in the baskets provided. • An usher will provide you with hand sanitizer. • Take your place in the pew as directed by an usher. • You may only share a pew with those people who live in your home, except in cases of single participants sitting at a social distance. • Social distance will be maintained at all times.

During Mass: • Do not change pews once you are seated. • Wear your mask/face covering throughout Mass (except when receiving Holy Communion). • No physical contact, except with members of your own household, during the sign of peace. • No singing or use of hymnals will occur during the Mass, in an effort to minimize risk of contamination.

Receiving Holy Communion: • The priest will approach each row for communion. • When the usher approaches your pew, stand up. • You will be given more hand sanitizer by the usher; please remember not to touch your face after this. • Receive the Host in your hand ONLY. • After the priest passes by you, remove the strap from one ear of your mask or face covering, letting it hang from the other ear and uncovering your mouth, consume the Host. • Replace the mask over your mouth and nose. • You may kneel or pray silently until the priest is finished with the congregation.

After Mass: • Gather all personal items. • Use only the proper exits, as directed by an usher. • Do not congregate outside the doors or in the parking lots. • Do not remove your mask until you have left the grounds.

While our parish staff will attempt to take appropriate precautions consistent with the advice of public health authorities, parishioners and guests should understand that they assume the risk of contracting Covid-19 any time they enter a public space since such precautions do not eliminate the risk of infection. Parishioners will always be the first priority. We will strive to communicate clearly and frequently, to ensure we are doing all that we can to safeguard your health and to always support and prioritize your spiritual welfare. Immaculate Conception Daybreak Transitional Housing for the Homeless 2020 Annual Appeal

For nearly 30 years, Immaculate Conception Daybreak of Elmhurst has rented apartments to house homeless families. This is a self-supporting ministry, funded solely through personal donations.

IC Daybreak commits to pay rent and utilities every month for the FIVE units it provides to those in need. Mentors meet with these families on a weekly basis to teach budgeting and life skills. Families transition out of these apartments within a two-year period. Since inception, IC Daybreak has helped 85 families transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency.

We have added three new families to our program in 2020. It is a privilege to work with these moms who want to provide a better life for their children. Our families are all unique but share in the common struggle to have a place to call “home” and learn the skills necessary to be- come and remain self-sufficient. We currently have 15 mentors working with our families, along with a parish attorney who offers his expertise on a pro-bono basis.

CAN YOU: FUND A FAMILY FOR A YEAR ($12,000)? FUND A FAMILY FOR A MONTH ($995)? FUND A FAMILY FOR A WEEK ($250) HELP IN ANY AMOUNT?

Do you have questions about our program? Are you interested in learning more about mentoring a family? Contact Dan Doherty at 630-292-8670 or Pam Stefik at 630-530-3497.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We the people of Immaculate Conception Parish are Christians who worship and glorify God as a sign of our faith. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we proclaim our faith to the world through prayer, education, concern, and service to our community. By participating in the sacraments and giving of our time, talent and treasure, we help to make Christ present and share God’s love in our community and the world around us.

MARRIAGES: Please call Catey Cohen at least 6 months in advance (530-8991). SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Saturday: 2:00-3:30PM The Epiphany of the Lord www.icelmhurst.org January 3, 2021 11 Year End Giving Advent is a time of preparation. During this time of the Covid pandemic, we will prepare to celebrate the coming of Our Lord. Our houses will be decorated. Gifts will be bought. Festive celebrations will happen in our loving homes. Christmas is a time of joy. Take the time to be still and pray. Prepare a place for the coming of our Lord, Jesus in your heart.

Another way to prepare for the end of the year is through charitable giving. When we look back at the countless blessings many of us have received throughout the year, we hope that you will consider special ways to give back to the Lord for all He has given us. Please remember your spiritual home, Immaculate Conception, as well as our We are IC! Capital Campaign, as you discern your year-end gifts. For traditional monetary donations, contributions are deductible for tax purposes. Whether you are using offertory envelopes or taking advantage of the safe and convenient Online Giving program, proper credit will be reflected on your Parishioner statement. As a reminder, you can access the Online Giving program on the IC Parish website by clicking the orange “Donate Online” button on the left.

Following are a few alternatives to traditional donations for your consideration:

Qualified Charitable Distributions These typically include contributions from Donor Advised Funds, Required Minimum Distributions (RMD), or annuities. If you have an established Donor Advisor Fund or are contemplating creating one, please consider including Immaculate Conception as a charitable recipient of a donation from the fund. A Donor Advised Fund is administered by a third party for the primary purpose of managing contributions to charitable organizations, such as Immaculate Conception Parish.

Additionally, if you are age 70 ½ or older, you can contact your IRA Fund Administrator and arrange for a tax-free direct transfer of your RMD to Immaculate Conception as a charitable donation. By doing a direct transfer from your IRA, the donation satisfies your required distribution yet does not increase your adjusted gross income for tax purposes. RMD’s are not required for 2020, but you may still use them for contributions.

Stock Donation For those who may own stocks, a review of your stock portfolio before year end maybe advantageous. For example, if you have stock(s) that may have decreased in value over the past years, you may want to consider donating this stock to Immaculate Conception Parish. The donation could be eligible for a charitable contribution tax deduction, but also may provide an offset to capital gains that you may have for this year. If stock has increased in value, you may be able to claim a deduction for the full fair market value and eliminate any tax on the appreciation.

Employer Matching Gifts Companies frequently match their employee’s monetary contributions. If your employer has this type of program, please consider utilizing it on behalf of our Immaculate Conception Grade School or High School. Many corporations offer employee matching gift programs for educational institutions.

Charitable Gifts from Your Will or Trust An easy way to make a gift to Immaculate Conception is to include a bequest in your will or trust. You can give a specific sum, a percentage of your gross estate or your residuary estate. If you have any questions relative to year end giving options, please contact Mary Lynn King at 630-530-8848 or at [email protected].
