Bachmann, John: NEW YORK CITY HALL, PARK AND ENVIRONS. New York. [ca. 1849]. Tinted lithograph with additional hand-coloring, 13½ x 18¼ inches. Mild foxing. Very good. Matted and framed. An attractive view of Broadway, New York City by famed artist John Bachmann who was, at the time, only at the beginning of a brilliant printmaking career. According to Reps, Bachmann executed two views of New York City in 1849, though Reps does not record this one. Here, Bachmann portrays Broadway in a clean and very inviting manner. “Along the broad thoroughfare moves a smart array of carriages, coaches, and fashionably-dressed pedestrians. The fountain playing in the imperfect triangle of City Hall Park had now permanently replaced the temporary one erected there during the Croton Water Celebration that took place there in 1842. Beyond the fountain is City Hall itself, admired by residents and visitors alike for its architectural splendor: a successful adaptation of French Renaissance and American colonial influences” – Deák. Bachmann’s reputation as a fine artist, lithographer, and printer is assured through his work, even if only considering his New York City views. Little is known of the man himself, though he is believed to have emigrated from Germany in the 1840s, bringing with him a fully-developed style and competence unusual for the period. “No finer artist of city views worked in America than John Bachmann” – Reps. -

Along the tops of the walls were public promenades where Edgar Allan Poe enjoyed his walks. A remnant of the reservoir can still be seen today in the New York Public Library. Garden Terrace 20 Grey Goose • Dill • Coriander • Honey ~ Standing adjacent to the reservoir was the New York Crystal Palace, built to house America’s first World’s Fair in 1853. The glass and cast iron structure rates as one of New York’s first tourist attractions. Sadly the Palace and all of its curiosities were mysteriously destroyed by a fire on October 5th, 1858. BSL CLASSROOM LOCATION GUIDE BRYANT PARK A BIT OF HISTORY FIRST! In 1686, when the area was still a wilderness, New York's colonial governor, Thomas Dongan, designated the area now known as Bryant Park as a public space. The first park at the site was opened in 1847 and was called Reservoir Square. Reservoir Square contained the New York Crystal Palace, which hosted the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in 1853 and burned down in 1858. The square was renamed in 1884 for journalist William Cullen Bryant. The reservoir was demolished in 1900 and the New York Public Library was built on the site, opening in 1911. Bryant Park was rebuilt in 1933– 1934. After a period of decline, it was restored in 1988–1992. Now Bryant Park has become a beloved, year-round New York City destination. Known as Manhattan's Town Square, the park is famous for its lush seasonal gardens, free activities, and al fresco dining. A structure wherein each element, in relation to every other, leads endlessly away from itself. In The Infinite Conversation, Blanchot frames speech as detour.1 In the work of writers as diverse as Gertrude Stein and Henry James, various deployments of language turn the reader away, on numerous levels, from plot and character, from nouns and facts, from linear progression, from coherent narrative, clarity and cognition, engaging with reading as movement and encounter rather than as a progressive accumulation of quanta in the service of constructing a singular truth.2 Robert Rauschenburg once sent a telegram to Iris Clert saying “This is a portrait of Iris Clert if I say so”. What then is this movement in/of reading? Following Blanchot, we might think it as a movement of detour, which The Infinite Conversation locates in relation to the question: “Every true question opens onto the whole of questions… But now we see that there is in it, more “profoundly,” a detour that diverts questioning from being able to be a question, and from being able to bring about an answer.”3 The detour for Blanchot is labyrinthine: the question contains a detour away from itself; speech itself is a detour in which the question slips away; the question is a detour that speaks through the detour of speech. -
