Karpaz Yarımadası Arkeolojik Yerleşimleri
Anadolu / Anatolia 33, 2007 E. Öztepe KARPAZ YARIMADASI ARKEOLOJİK YERLEŞİMLERİ Erhan ÖZTEPE Anahtar Kelimeler: Kıbrıs • Karpaz Yarımadası • Yerleşim Özellikleri • Mezarlar • Kutsal Alanlar Keywords: Cyprus • Karpass Peninsula • Settlements Patterns• Cemeteries • Sanctuaries Özet Bu çalışma Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti sınırları içerisinde gerçekleştirilen arkeolojik araş- tırmalar ışığında Karpaz Yarımadası’nın Neolitik Dönem’den Roma Dönemi’ne kadar yerleşim özelliklerini değerlendirmeyi amaçlar. Abstract: The archaeological settlements of the Karpass Peninsula This essay aims to evaluate the settlement history of the Karpass Peninsula in northern Cyprus in light of the available evidence derived from archaeological excavations and surveys. It places a spe- cial emphasis upon the archaeological settlements, cemeteries and sanctuaries that may help us to reconstruct the settlement history of the Karpass Peninsula. The first traces of human occupation in this region have been attested at the Aceramic Neolithic site of Kastros. A noticeable increase seems to have occurred in the number of sites in the Bronze Age. -

PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS TO THE UNITED NATIONS BZO SECOND AVENUE NEW YORK, N. Y. IOOI7 Ref: 2002/77/2 Excellency, I have the honour to refer to the decision of the President of Cyprus, Mr. Kyprianou, to visit during this month the Greek Cypriot citizens of the Republic in the occupied area of Karpass. This decision, together with a request that the necessary facilities might be provided by the United Nations, was communicated yesterday to your Special Representative, Ambassador Galindo Pohl, who undertook to communicate with the Secretary-General on the subject. Sub- sequently, Ambassador Pohl informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that Mr. Denktash places conditions for such visit, to the effect that a letter by the President of the Republic should be addressed to him as President of the so-called "Turkish Federated State of Cyprus", or that a meeting between them be arranged to discuss the matter. The President has the legitimate and fundamental right to visit citizens of the Republic in any part of the territory, particularly when, as in this case, the visit is motivated purely by humanitarian reasons, having regard to the situation of the Greek Cypriot citizens in the Karpass. -

Map 72 Cyprus Compiled by D
Map 72 Cyprus Compiled by D. Rupp, 1994 Introduction Many factors, both ancient and not so ancient, have contributed to the cultural map that can be constructed of Cyprus between 1100 B.C. and A.D. 640. Before the beginning of the third century B.C. the island remained on the periphery of the Greek world. Only then did hellenization begin to permeate its entire society, not just the elite in the urban centers of some of the Iron Age kingdoms. Political and economic ties with the Levant, as well as cultural influences, had contributed significantly to shaping the Cypriote landscape in the Iron Age. Until hellenization irrevocably transformed Cypriote society and its use of the landscape in the Hellenistic period, the historical geography of the island must be understood in its own indigenous terms. Aside from the principal urban centers of the Iron Age kingdoms, Greek and Roman sources do not provide a wealth of detailed information on the geography of Cyprus. Extant epigraphical sources are likewise relatively mute on this topic. It is thus archaeology that must be employed as the primary source for historical geography. In the later nineteenth century, the plundering of chamber tombs and of rural sanctuaries under the guise of research was the norm in Cypriote archaeology. Although subsequently this regrettable approach was abandoned and the scientific excavation of kingdom centers commenced, fascination with the material culture revealed by tombs and by sanctuaries continued unabated. As a result, while there now exists a wealth of evidence for their location, overall distribution patterns and periods of occupation, by contrast the location, size and nature of settlements is much less well understood. -
CHRISTIAN MONUMENTS of CYPRUS Under Turkish Military Occupation Map Sections
CHRISTIAN MONUMENTS OF CYPRUS Under Turkish Military Occupation “ And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-jesus: which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. Then Saul (who is also called Paul), filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, And said, O full of all subtlety and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord. “ Acts 13:6-12 The Conversion of the Proconsul – Raphael, 1515-16 CONTENTS Monastery of Profitis Elias, Ayia Marina Skilloura. Quaternary Marine Terraces on Cyprus: Constraints on Uplift and Pedogenesis, and the Geoarchaeology of Palaipafos
Quaternary Marine Terraces on Cyprus: Constraints on Uplift and Pedogenesis, and the Geoarchaeology of Palaipafos ZOMENIA ZOMENI Ph.D. 2012 AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Zomenia Zomeni for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Soil Science presented on June 12, 2012 Title: Quaternary Marine Terraces on Cyprus: Constraints on Uplift and Pedogenesis, and the Geoarchaeology of Palaipafos Abstract approved: _____________________________________________________________________ Jay S. Noller Numerous flights of Quaternary marine terraces are present around the island of Cyprus, in the Eastern Mediterranean. These terraces are a result of the global eustatic sea-level curve and local tectonism. Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5 through MIS 13 terraces are identified, mapped and dated. Palaeoshoreline elevation, an excellent indicator for a past sea–level, and new numerical geochronology are used to calculate an Upper Pleistocene uplift rate for various coastal sectors. Southwestern Cyprus presents the highest uplift rates of 0.35-0.65 mm/year with other sections suggesting uplift of 0.07-0.15 mm/year. This Upper Pleistocene tectonic signal is attributed to an active offshore subduction/collision system to the southwest of Cyprus, evidenced from the seismic activity offshore and the surface expression of a blind thrust fault in the Pafos region. Soil chronosequences and geology in southwestern Cyprus are studied in order to understand the Quaternary development on this uplifting landscape. Soil profile properties are used to calculate a profile development index (PDI), a method often applied to geomorphic surfaces as a relative dating method. Well-developed red and clayey soils occur in the coastal sector, on broad and low-angle surfaces, specifically on marine terraces and alluvial fans. -
