Regan May 2019 Major Subject: Performance Studies Copyright 2019 Brandon Kempf ABSTRACT This thesis examines the effects of gentrification on subcultures in Seattle using grunge as an interpretive lens. Distortion is theorized as both an artistic/aesthetic practice and a translator of social/subcultural phenomena to understand the ambivalent and ironic sensibilities found within the study of grunge and Seattle subcultures, in both the early 1990s and present day. The research begins with an analysis of grunge in the popular culture industry in the 1990s to track instances of social breach and cultural creation/destruction, and then further examined through the model of early subcultural studies. The problematics that arise are then reappraised within an analysis of grunge in the post-subcultural model, which makes space for study of the current activity and subcultural participation of grunge. A case study of the current socio-political and economic issues in Seattle is then presented. Grunge is then revealed to be presently practiced and understood in both dominant culture and subcultural formations as a spectrum of nostalgia and revivalism. Here, the ironies and ambivalences of grunge style, practice, and form are revealed and studied as paradoxical concepts. These complex webs are finally understood to be generative spaces for the creation of new meaning through retroactive forms of performance, both artistically and culturally.

    April 6, 1950 Spotlite F.F.A. WINS HONORS The Manning high school F.F.A. members made sure that their alarm clocks were wound last Friday evening, March 31; but their reason wasn't their chores the next morning. They went to Atlantic to the F.F.A. district contest. The boys represented the Manning F.F.A. chapter in eight entries. Three books, the reporter's scrapbook, the secretary's book and the treasurer's book, were entered by Russell Spies, Leland Kienast and Robert Tank, respectively. All three of these books received number I ratings. Manning was represented in the freshmen creed speaking contest by Wilbur Jahn who recited the F.F.A. creed. "Are We as Strong as We Think?" was the topic given by Pete Petersen in the public speaking department, and in extemporaneous speaking, Gene Dales was given the subject, "Efficiency of Farm Livestock" to speak on for five minutes, followed by five minutes of questions. In these speech contests, Wilbur Jahn and Pete Petersen won number III ratings, and Gene Dales received a number I rating. Are you interested in learning how to conduct a business meeting? Ask Allen Jensen, Leon Hugeback, Russell spies, Myron Bogatzke, LeRoy Dammann, Robert Grundmeier and Norman Andresen about this technique. These seven boys composed Manning's parliamentary procedure team and won a number I rating. Robert Tank and Donald Pfannkuch represented Manning in the chapter program department by showing and explaining a movie on the F. F. A. program. These two fellows were also rewarded with a number I rating.

    Place and Punk: The heritage significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West William Kenneth Smith MA By Research University of York Archaeology May 2017 Abstract Academic institutions and the heritage industry are now actively seeking to understand the wider social, cultural and economic processes which surround the production and consumption of popular music histories. Music is a local creation; it is created through a flux of internal and external influences, and is bound up in questions of economy, networks, art, identity and technology. In the early 1990s the Pacific North West of the United States of America gave birth to what became known as the musical genre of ‘grunge’. It developed into a distinctive genre, presenting a style and sound which propagated within the confines of a specific time and place. As construction sites continue to emerge throughout the Pacific North West, the impact of music still provides an essential contribution to the regions character and culture. Despite this, countercultural pasts are vulnerable; not only to the passage of time but also the processes of development, gentrification and marginalization. This research explores the heritage significance of the Pacific North West punk scene. It presents a historiography of punk and an appraisal of the scholarly discourse surrounding place. This study utilizes artifacts, sites and oral histories to explore countercultural material and memories as well as the form and function of punk. Themes such as geography and environment are enfranchised into the discussion as ethnography and multidisciplinary approaches are applied to make a unique contribution to what is an essential and timely discussion regarding people, culture, heritage and place.

I for one will always be thankful that that album came out when it did, slightly over a week before my eighteenth birthday. I was a still-wet-behind-the-ears college freshman, away from home for the first time. Just as my life was changing drastically, so was the culture. Music, politics, fashion and art underwent an enormous change as the 90’s sloughed off the last vestiges of the 80’s. Concealed as I was in the quiet town of Ellensburg, Washington, within the tiny confines of my third-floor door room, it was the change in musical guard that first caught my attention. Friends from Seattle regularly brought over dubbed tapes to share with those of us here in college, and among one batch was an advance tape for a band called Nirvana. Nevermind was already causing excitement before its official release of September 24th, 1991. Leaving my friends for the night, I couldn’t get the songs, the sounds, out of my head. About a week later I was in yet another dorm room, listening to a brutish lout rave about the same album. Even at this early date it was obvious Nirvana was crossing all boundaries, even if the fellow who owned this copy (the real CD, this time) made fun of the over-the-top screams that so captivated me.

    (This essay was first published in Jon Stratton Australian Rock: Essays on Popular Music, Network Books: Perth, 2007) The Scientists and Grunge: Influence and Globalised Flows The Scientists, or at least two of the band‘s three members, left Perth for Sydney in September, 1981. By this time Kim Salmon was already redefining the sound of the band. In Perth the first version of the Scientists, with James Baker who subsequently joined the Hoodoo Gurus on drums, had produced what, in retrospect, was the quintessential Perth punk album. Released in 1981, the Pink Album as it came to be known for its pink cover was composed of songs that had a powerful combination of English and American influences. Crudely, you could say the sound amalgamated the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls. However, the band‘s over-riding influence was the conservative tunefulness of the English power-pop tradition that runs from the Troggs to the Buzzcocks and the Vibrators. The Scientists mrk I had already decided to break up when the Pink Album was recorded. Salmon subsequently formed the short-lived band Louie Louie with the drummer who would later provide the beats for the second version of the Scientists, Brett Rixon. It was during this time that Salmon began to evolve the sound that would characterize the second, and more well-known nationally and internationally, version of the Scientists. ‗Swampland‘, a song that will feature prominently in the historical narrative of this chapter, was written at this time with the third member of Louie Louie, Kim Williams.
