A Kirby Family Record – 2

Compiler’s Note

The within Kirby Family Record was prepared by Terrell Marshall Sr. through correspondence with members of the family, and completed in 1953. It begins with the grandparents of John Terrell Kirby and Lavana Bohannon and continues through the fifth generation. Only descendants in a direct line from John Terrell Kirby are shown and the shows all descendants of each of his children.

The second section contains ancestral data as to the Bohannon, Haynie, Lipscomb, Posey, Terrell, and Wilkins families as provided by my grandmother, May Kirby Thomas.

A Kirby Family Record – 3 Editor’s Note My grandfather (Terrell Marshall Sr.) spent many hours gathering data, corresponding with relatives, and compiling the genealogical information that his grandmother (hereinafter referred to as MKT) had accumulated over the years. My grandfather, a lawyer, was a very methodical person and my belief is that the information he has gathered about current generations (i.e. current in the 1920s to 1950s) is quite accurate. Some of the ancestry information is suspect (and I have tried to comment on that so as not to have the reader take away any false impressions as to its accuracy). This information may provide no new information to the reader, but I felt I owed it to my grandfather to put this information in the public domain. I have tried to add some dates to persons who may have died since he originally “completed” this information, but was not able to find the information (or the time) to do it for everyone. Anyone for whom I know no date of death fell victim to the privatizer algorithm of my genealogy program.

I debated filling in much more information than what was not known 60+ years ago, but then I would probably die before I completed my Grandfather’s accumulation of genealogical information (no matter how inconsequential it might be) and, besides, others have done work that is more complete. To paraphrase a saying: “it is better to have printed and lost then never to have printed at all”.

I give permission to any persons who wish to use any of the within information that we have originated, for personal use only, understanding that they should attempt to verify what they can.

Note: any notes of mine look something like “Ed. note:”.

Terrell Marshall III (completed March 2015) Current email: [email protected]

P.S. After completing my notes on this accumulation of information I find that I intruded more than I had expected as I revisited the information and compared it to somewhat more current knowledge on some of the ancestral lines enclosed within.

A Kirby Family Record – 17 Editor’s Notes - Bohannon

This section contains:

1. Bohannon - An opening biographical piece about the Bohannon ancestry, written by “Lee” (probably Leander) Bohannon, starting with Lee’s grandfather J. Bohannon.

2. A.C. Bohannon’s Civil War letter. A copy of an original letter (since partially burned) that Andrew Calhoun Bohannon sent his sister (probably Lavana Bohannon Kirby, mother of MKT) about 1860 from a camp during the Civil War. The original is in the original compilation.

3. A.C. Bohannon’s Civil War letter - transcription. I’ve attempted a transcription of the above letter, but many words are missing or indeterminate.

4. Bohannon & Kirby - Family Records – a copy of an original family record document kept in the original compilation.

5. Bohannon & Kirby - Family Records – transcription of the above original family record document added by me.

6. Pictures of John Terrell Kirby and Lavana Bohannon – from originals in family files. Sorry that the 1888 one of John Terrell is fuzzy, but glare from the glass prevented me from getting a good shot (I didn’t want to remove the backing). His picture looks like the same one from his obituary notice in the Appendix.

7. Elizabeth Bohannon’s Contract with Freedmen – 1865. A copy of the contract that was in the original compilation. The Elizabeth Bohannon in this contract was probably Elizabeth Adams Bohannon, wife of Joseph Bohannon (who died 1852). She died in 1901 at 87 years. The J.T. Kirby was probably her son-in-law John Terrell Kirby. This contract may be one of the most interesting in this small set of original documents as it might be useful for some current African-Americans to trace that they lived on the Bohannon plantation.

8. Elizabeth Bohannon’s Contract with Freedmen – 1865 ( transcription). A transcription of the original family record document added by me to aid the reader. Note that since this is a two-sided document some of the bleeding through of ink can add to confusion, but I was able to adjust the color to make it more readable.

Note: In 1999 I received correspondence, from Mary Padget, that included photos of Alexander Hamilton Bohannon (brother of Lavanna = JTKirby). Since I have not asked her permission to reprint them, I will not include them here.

A Kirby Family Record – 18 Bohannon

Dated from 1780

J. Bohannon was born and raised in England, married a Scotch lady in England and came to the USA and settled in N.C.. To them was born five children, four boys and one girl. The daughter named Rebecca married James Patterson of Salem, N.C. The boys, John, Duncan, Alexander, and Thomas. Alexander married Elizabeth Hudspeth in 1787. Elizabeth was of Scotch parentage. They lived in N.C. until two children were born to them, Sarah and Joseph, and then moved to Lincoln Co., Ga. and in that co. were born two other children, Kate and Mary, called Pollie. When the younger child, Pollie, was about six months old her mother, Elizabeth H. Bohannon, in passing through a swamp gathered a piece of hemlock and chewed it, died in ten or fifteen minutes after arriving home. Joseph Bohannon, the only son, was born in 1790, married Elizabeth Adams in 1836. To them were born nine children, three daughters and six boys.

Notation on back: “Uncle Lee wrote this.”

(Ed. note: In the compiler’s handwriting we see: “Lee Bohannon was uncle of May Kirby Thomas”. Lee is probably Lavana’s brother Leander.)

The Front (which is burned on the right side) says:

Tenn. July Camp Dear Sister, I will you now if I can sit enough but I am so is doubtful. I got hear just for the Yankee and right hard trip it was too. I heard from the Capt. on yesterday he was well but wanted to hear from home very I would go and carry his but they wont let me. Col. Harper says he will be in a few days. If I have some I will send his mail There is no news here can learn more than you have already heard. We are all well. I can’t think of anything to write at this time. I guess Eck has wrote all in his letter. I will again soon. Write soon your brother.

A. C. Bohannon

The Back (which is burned on the left side) says:

This is one time and .. frost script Tell Mother, Lee says send one sound (?) jacket like… and owl hat (confederate) first chance.

(Ed. note: ‘Lee’ may be Andrew C. Bohannon’s brother Leander. Since Andrew died at 17 and was born in 1843 the date of this letter must be about 1860)

(Ed. note: In MKT’s handwriting it says “Mother’s brother – Andrew Bohannon- was killed in the war at the age of 17”. Note that “Mother” is MKT’s mother: Lavana Bohannon Kirby.)

A Kirby Family Record – 31 Editor’s Notes – Haynie This section contains: 1. Haynie/Wilkins Ancestry (traditional)– Traditional Haynie ancestry proposed based on information from [MEN_OF_MARK] and [VA_HIST_MAG]. Note that this shows connections to Wilkins lines, but that this is not supported by available data (see below). I have corrected the following from the original compilation that was clearly wrong: a. Richard Haynie Sr.’s will was proved Oct 1 1724, not 1734 as listed in XXXX and used by the compiler. b. Richard Haynie Sr’s wife was Elizabeth Bridgar (not Bridges). i. This was incorrectly listed as ‘Bridges’ in XXX and the tombstone was correctly transcribed in XXXX (and a copy of the original tombstone (found on ancestry.com) clearly shows ‘Bridgar’). ii. Volume 8, p. 42 of [WM_MARY_Q] correctly lists Elizabeth as the daughter of Richard & Jane Bridgar (Note that she is NOT the daughter of Col. Joseph Bridger). iii. Volume 17, p. 243 of [WM_MARY_Q] shows a ‘Bridget Haynie, daughter to Richard, was born Dec 6, 1686’. iv. Some researchers list Elizabeth’s birth date as 6 Dec 1688 or 31 Oct 1688. If you believe that Maximillian was born 31 Oct 1688 (as shown in Volume 22, pp. 88-90 of [VA_HIST_MAG]) then Elizabeth could not, reasonably, have been born in Oct or Dec of 1688. c. Richard Jr’s wife was listed as unknown, but based on newer information she appears to have been: Jane Greenstreet Hunter who m. before 15 Oct 1749.

2. Haynie/Wilkins Ancestry (data-supported). – I created this chart by aggregating multiple sources which included: [HARDY], [COWETA] , [TIDEWATER] , [HAYNIE_HITT], [VA_HIST_MAG]. This chart only displays a selected subset of the information in these sources to keep this summary chart manageable. The reason for the Haynie lineage, in this compilation, is because of the alleged marriages of two Wilkins men to Haynie women. HOWEVER, although everybody copies this information from the sources, I find counter-arguments to these and there may be NO connection ! a. I don’t see where Robert Wilkins marries Elizabeth /Bridget Haynie (b. 1686). i. Elizabeth Haynie married a Smith by the time of her father’s Oct 1724 will, so NOT married to Robert Wilkins, UNLESS he married her (allegedly 1710 or 1719- before 1724 and then she remarried). b. I don’t see evidence that John Wilkins married Elizabeth Haynie – nor what her parentage is ! i. UNLESS the “Child” Haynie (of Richard Jr & Jane Greenstreet) is Elizabeth/Mary who is alleged to have married John Wilkins. ii. UNLESS Elizabeth Haynie is the dau of Anthony (she would have been born < 1735). A Kirby Family Record – 32 Haynie/Wilkins Ancestry (traditional)

This section contains:

1. Biography of Tolleson Kirby. Included in original compilation-this appears to be a summary written by MKT. [MEN_OF_MARK], volume 6, pages 196-198 provides some purported ancestry of Tolleson’s grandson Joseph Tolleson Kirby. This repeats some of the Terrell and Kirby traditions (that we now know are suspect) and discusses J.T.’s wife’s Dent ancestry. See much more details on many Richard Kirby's descendants on Ted Zajac's website ([KIRBY_TZ]). 2. Tolleson Kirby’s Receipts - Three receipts for Tolleson Kirby’s donation of his state legislature salary for the support of the soldiers (May 5 1847; Dec 19 1861; Jan 28 1862). 3. Bohannon Documents - This appears to be a 7 Sep 1846 document about laying out a road. On the same sheet is a tax bill for Joseph Bohannon for 62 negroes. 4. Stock certificate - A copy of a stock certificate to Tolleson Kirby for 3 shares of the Coweta County Agricultural and Mechanical Association, dated Nov. 3rd 187.

A Kirby Family Record – 36 Kirby

Judge Tolleson Kirby was the son of Richard Kirby who came from Va. To S.C. Richard Kirby was of English descent. Their home in Eng. was called Kirby Hall. The wife of Richard Kirby was Louise Tolleson, daughter of John Tolleson a Revolutionary soldier. Judge Tolleson Kirby was a young Lieutenant in the war between the states and later was a member of the Georgia Legislature. There is a paper in the possession of a member of the family, May K. Thomas, which shows he turned his pay while in the Legislature over to the soldiers. Judge Tolleson Kirby’s wife Teresa Wilkins was the daughter of Moses Wilkins b. Nov. 21 1785, d. Nov. 10 1845 and his first wife who was Sarah Lipscomb, b. July 31 1795, d. Jul 14 1827, married Dec 1810 in Spartanburg, S. C. This Moses was the son of William Wilkins (fought in Revolutionary War) and his wife Elizabeth Terrell, b. June 10 1756, d. Dec 25 1820, married in Culpeper Co. Va. Captain Wm. Wilkins was born in Northampton Co. N.C. May 24 1746, d. April 2 1807. He enlisted for service to his country Aug 12, 1779, in Captain Thomas Ballard’s Company under Col. Abraham Shepard of 10th N.C. Reg. and was made lieutenant in 1780, later a Captain of Militia. (See N.C. state records of Continental army pages 1188-1189.) He was an Independent Ranger and Indian fighter with Adam Goudelock. He entered large acreages of land in Spartanburg Co. S.C. after the Revolution; but in his old age he returned to Rutherford Co. N.C. when his son was a member of the N.C. House of Commons. A Kirby Family Record – 43 Editor’s Notes - Posey/Musgrove This section contains: 1. The Posey ancestry is probably the most correct of all the ancestries in this volume. I have previously provided this information to the Maryland Genealogical Society and it was included in one of their bulletins many years ago. For a slightly more updated version see the work of Fredric Saunders (reference [POSEY_FZSAUND]). Mr. Saunders also addresses the “alleged” ancestry of Francis Posey and whether he is descended from the Poschet family of Voyaux, Cambrai, France. 2. The compiler provided an opening statement about the Posey family as the first information provided in this section (and I have left that herein). However, according to Mr. Saunders, there is no proof that Francis Posey was a Huguenot who came from France via England. I know I have seen early Huguenot surnames on the Maryland State Archives website that says Posey is a Huguenot name (but this could be based on the false Poschet information and may not be true). 3. Posey Chart #1 – from the handwriting on the original this looks like MKT’s work on her ancestry chart tracing to Francis Posey from she and her siblings. Whether it is or not, the information is definitely true based on Dr. Johnston’s findings in other data he provided. Note that Dr. Johnston is a genealogist from Maryland who was paid by MKT to validate/determine her Posey lineage. I recognize his miniscule writing and have seen it while doing research at the Maryland Historical Society (where they have an area named for him). 4. Posey Chart #2 – from the handwriting on the original this is definitely Dr. Johnston’s work (although it looks like MKT’s writing in adding the surname ‘Addison’ to Francis Posey’s wife). 5. Posey Chart #3 – One of Dr. Johnston’s charts. This is similar to Chart #4 and it is not clear, at a brief glance, which was done first. 6. Posey Chart #4 – One of Dr. Johnston’s charts. 7. Posey Chart #5 – from the handwriting on the original this looks like MKT’s work where it looks like she’s combined information from Dr. Johnston’s work. 8. Musgrove Chart #1 - One of Dr. Johnston’s charts (based on handwriting of the original work). 9. Some POSEY Tombstone Inscriptions (Mrs. Jane Posey & Rev Humphrey Posey). 10. Francis Posey Descendants chart. I created this on all of the information that Dr. Johnston provided since the plethora of Posey charts was confusing. I also included a few items from Addison F. Posey’s letter (see below). 11. Charles Musgrove Summary Descendants chart. Similarly, this is a vertical representation of the pedigree chart Dr. Johnston provided. 12. Addison F. Posey letter to Mrs. L. P. Thomas (MKT) dated 9 April 1898. This jibes very closely with what Genealogist Dr. Johnston found out about the Posey family. Note that we find information on www.Findagrave.com that corroborates some of his information. 13. Dr. Johnston’s Letter #1 (14 Aug 1904) to Mrs. L. P. Thomas about POSEY research. 14. Dr. Johnston’s Letter #2 (16 Sept 1904) to Mrs. L. P. Thomas about POSEY research. He declared success with verification of her ancestry. 15. POSEY Family. Extracts from Maryland Archives, and other sources that Dr. Johnston obtained and provided to Mrs. L. P. Thomas to validate her Posey ancestry. 16. MUSGROVE/MUSGRAVE Family - Extracts from Maryland Archives (et al), and other sources from Dr. Johnston that validate her Musgrove ancestry.

South Carolina gave to Antarigo County, Alabama, many of its first citizens of French Descent—many of these were

Huguenots—among them were the Poseys. Probate Judge Posey belongs to one of the old plantation families. His father, John

Posey, purchased the old Gibbons place on Prattville-Bridge

Creek Road. The old plantation house is gone, but a group of chinaberry trees and a cluster of crepemyrtle mark the old home site. Judge Posey is the grandson of Francis Posey, a pioneer settler of Huguenot descent.

A Kirby Family Record – 55 Addison F. Posey letter to Mrs. L. P. Thomas Greenville, Alabama April 9, 1898

Mrs. L. P. Thomas, Little Rock, Ark.

My dear Madam;

Your note of recent date, inclosing inquiry of the Mayor of Abbeville, S.C.and by him returned to you referring to me, has been received.

It will afford me pleasure to give you any aid to your "stock of information", or aid you financially. The tradition of my family is that the original was a clergyman of the Church of England sent to Maryland long before the Revolution, and became the owner of a large tract of land called "Lewis' Neck", on Potomac River. He became extravagant, fell from grace, (if ever in it) & died poor. It was from him sprang the Virginia branch also. My great grandfather, grandfather, and my own father were born in Charles County, Maryland, on Potomac River, four miles from Port Tobacco, and how many before in the same line, I can't tell.

My grandfather was, I am quite sure, named Benjamin and was married, in 1770, to Mary Musgrove. They grew Robert, born in 1771 and Benjamin Lane, born Nov. 2, 1790, with intermediates, Ann, Sarah, Frank & Charles. Benjamin Lane was the youngest - he was my father, and died in Abbeville in 1843.

About 1791 my grandfather & family were a part of a large colony made up from both sides of the Potomac that removed to Abbeville District, S.C. (now county), where I was born, raised and lived until I removed to this place in 1851. My grandfather died soon after his removal to S.C., my father was too young to know anything of Maryland, and the most I can tell is what I remember to have heard my grandmother tell two elder sisters, who hung upon her. She lived with my father in her last years and died in Abbeville in 1836 in her 87th year. My principal source of information of the family was "Uncle Harry", raised by my grandfather and came down to me as an heir-loom and died at this place in 1858, aged about 80 years. He was a very faithful negro, aristocratic, never associated with common negroes, nor allowed any to claim their owners as equal to the Poseys.

My grandmother was a highly educated woman lived near Mt. Vernon and often visited Gen. Washington, and I remember to have heard her speak of conversations with him & Thomas Jefferson on the slavery question, and she entertained the same opinions. She was an heiress, and beside money enough to satisfy her wants, she owned about one hundred slaves which she would have emancipated, believing slavery a sin, but marrying during minority her husband found other uses for negroes than freeing them and except a remnant they were sold to pay for his extravagance and mismanagement. It was this loss of property, leaving the bad companionship of pride and poverty that induced the leaving of Maryland. None of the family recouped above good livers except my father.

A Kirby Family Record – 56 Addison F. Posey letter to Mrs. L. P. Thomas (page 2) If my father left any brothers I can't recall. I am quite sure none came into Abbeville with his colony, yet there must have been a relative as my uncle Robert married a female of the same name. I can't recall his name as he died before my day. Thomas Posey, of the Virginia Line in the war of the Revolution, was a relative of my grandfather, a cousin, I think. Of him, the People's Encyclopedia, published in 1883 says: "Thomas Posey, commanded in several battles of the Revolution, was present at Yorktown, and in 1812-13 was U.S. Senator for Louisiana, becoming Gov. of Indiana Ter. 1813, and Agent for Indian Affairs 1816; born in Va. 1750, died 1818." I suppose he died in the U. S. service somewhere. I don't think, indeed, I am quite sure he never lived in So. Ca.

What part my grandfather may have taken in War of '76 has escaped me. I am on track of it now for my daughter, Mrs. W. C. Pope, of Montgomery, Ala., who wants to show her title as a "Daughter". I have found the name more common than I ever dreamed of before age and moving about changed it, yet with a rare exception so respectable that I could afford to claim kinship. I saw in the early part of the late war that a Mrs. Posey of Port Tobacco, Md. With a Mrs. Greenhow were held as prisoners in the National Capitol, charged with burning blue lights for Beauregard. I learn from parties who have removed from Charles County, Md. since the late war that several prominent families of the name still reside at or near Port Tobacco, one of whom is a large planter named Richard, and another named Adrian, who, five years ago was editing a newspaper at Port Tobacco. I can't call to mind the name of Richard Posey with any of the So. Ca. emigrants. Not one of my name now remains in Abbeville and I know of no one there who could tell as much as myself. My eldest sister, in her 80th year, Mrs. E. Lynch, lives in the adjoining county of Edgefitch. Another sister, Mrs. Sarah P. Watson now lives with son in New York. Another sister, the youngest member, born 1831, Mrs. Charlotte Calhoun, P. O. address Ninety Six would live in Abbeville, had not the last Legislature put her in the new county of Greenwood.

My only brother, Ben Lane served in the Palmetto Reg. in the war with Mexico, was a lawyer in Mobil, Ala. in 1861 and raised the first company in Ala. and commanded the 1st & 38th Ala. in the latter part of the last war died in 1888 and his widow and child live at Bay St. Louis Miss. I am now 77 years of age and was raised at Abbeville C. H. S. C. and lived there until 1851 when I came direct to this place. The name is more in Kentucky than elsewhere. One of them heard of me somehow, and four years ago he wrote to me for all I knew of the family, which I gave him. About two years ago he passed thru this place and called to see me. He tracked back to Potomac and we claimed him. He said he was collecting all he could of the name. He is one of the handsomest men I ever saw and highly educated. His name is John & P. O. Henderson, Kentucky on the Ohio river opposite Indiana.

The grants of land for services in the war of the Revolution, were all from Va., as she was the only Colony or State that had such to give. She gave all north of the Ohio river & east of Miss. to the U. S. with the provision that slavery should never exist there. Kentucky & Tenn., also formerly belonged to Virginia. The records of these grants are to be found where located, and should also be in the U. S. records in Washington.

You must do the best you can with my scrawl due to age and a sore thumb. If what I have stated shall add to your stock of information, benefit your pocket, or otherwise repay you for the reading, it will more than repay me for the small labor expended.

With Kind regards and best wishes,

/s/ Addison F. Posey

A Kirby Family Record – 57 Dr. Johnston’s Letter #1 about Posey Research

Dr. Christopher Johnston 1 West Twentieth Street Baltimore, MD Owings Mills, MD August 14th 1904 Dear Mrs. Thomas;

I have now reached the limit we agreed upon and send you the results of my work up to the present time. Along with the extracts from the records I enclose a tabular pedigree which will, I hope, make matters somewhat clearer. From this you will see that the Posey family was quite an extensive one. So far I have not been able to identify your ancestor, but there is a considerable amount of material still unexplored and I should hope - though of course I can not be certain - that further research will yield the result we desire. I find that the name Benjamin frequently occurs, but I do not find the name Benjamin Lane. Might not this be an error for Belaine, which is also a family name? It might easily come to be written B. Lane, and it is a short step from this to Benj. Lane. At present this is merely a conjecture; further search will doubtless show whether it is well based.

In any case we have now a full pedigree of the Posey family for the earlier generation at least, and I should say that the outlook was quite promising for a continuance of the investigation.

In case you desire me to continue the work, I can now proceed more rapidly as I have worked off most of the matter which hampered me before. Perhaps the enclosed may give you some suggestions. I have a copy of the enclosed pedigrees and notes so it will not be necessary to return them to me if you wish me to go on.

Very truly yours

/s/ Christopher Johnston

P.S. My present address is Owings Mills, Md. I shall not move back to town until Oct. 1st.

A Kirby Family Record – 58 Dr. Johnston’s Letter #2 about Posey Research

Dr. Christopher Johnston 1 West Twentieth Street Baltimore, MD Owings Mills, MD Sept. 16th 1904 My Dear Mrs. Thomas,

It gives me much pleasure to inform you that I have been able to establish your Posey pedigree beyond any doubt and I send you the results of my work herewith. While your family tradition is very much at fault in regard to the earlier generation, it is unusually correct as concerns your ancestor who removed to Abbeville, SC. His name was Benjamin Vernon Posey (Not Benjamin Lane Posey) and he did marry Mary Musgrove. He was the son of Francis Posey, whose will I found, after looking for it in vain at Annapolis, at La Plata, the county seat of Charles County. He is not mentioned in his father's deed of gift to his children (dated 22 Sept 1750) which I sent you, but he is mentioned in the will. His middle name appears in the records as Vernal, Varnal and Vernon. I have followed the last form as the most probable, but it is impossible to decide with certainty in view of the conflict of authorities.

This however is a minor matter; The chief thing is that his identity is absolutely certain. It is positively established by the series of deeds showing that he married Mary Musgrove one of the daughters of Charles Musgrove of St. Mary's County. All this is shown very clearly in the abstracts I send herewith. I find further that he sold his property in Charles County in January 1791 and thereafter disappears from the County records. This agrees precisely with your family accounts which states that he removed about 1791 to Abbeville, SC Your family account also states that Mary Musgrove, wife of Benj. V. Posey, died at Abbeville C. H. in 1836 (Ed. note: in the margin it says: "In another place Mr. A.F. Posey says she died in 1836 in her 87th year") aged 86 years. Here again we have a close agreement, since according to the final account of her father's estate she "was aged about 10 years" in 1758. This would make her birth in 1748 or 1749 or there about, and she would have been about 87 or 88 years old at her death in 1836, which agrees closely enough with your own account, or rather that of Mr. Addison F. Posey. In short there can be no possible doubt about this matter and your pedigree is established by undoubted proof at every step. There is, by the way, one link in the chain of evidence that may require a little explanation. I refer to the descent from John Posey, who died in 1689 to Francis Posey, his grandson who died in 1774. Two questions arise here:

1. How is it proved that Francis Posey was the son of Benjamin? 2. How is it proved that Benjamin was the son of John?

A Kirby Family Record – 59 Dr. Johnston’s Letter #2 about Posey Research (page 2)

I. The difficulty is that Benjamin Posey though living in 1689 when he signed the Charles County Address (MD Archives viii, 138) and presumably of age at that time, left no will nor does it appear that there was any administration on his estate. The date of his death is therefore unknown, but fortunately other evidence is available in regards his wife and children. The Charles County birth record registers the birth of Susanna daughter of Benjamin and Mary Posey, 1 June 1691 and that of Mary daughter, the same parents 10 Sept 1693. Now this last Mary Posey in her will (1725) names her mother Mary Miller, her brothers Francis, Benj. & Belaine Posey, her two sisters, etc. etc. Again John Posey in his will (1717) names his mother Mary Posey, his brothers Francis, Benj. & Belaine Posey and his sister Mary Posey (the same who made her will in 1725). Further there is the deed of gift 17 Feb'y 1717/18 from Mary Posey, widow, to her sons Benj., Francis, Belaine Posey, which was probably made in view of her marriage to Mr. Miller. Taking all these points together it is perfectly clear that Francis Posey was the son of Benjamin and Mary, and so the first question is answered.

II. We have now to prove that Benjamin Posey was the son of John Posey who died in 1689. The will of this John Posey does not remain upon record, but extracts from it are given in the petition of his widow Susanna 13 Jan'y 1690, which you already have. It appears from this that John Posey devised two tracts of land to two of his sons and the rest of his estate to his wife (during widowhood) and "the rest of his children". The account of 10 March 1690 shows that "the rest of his children" were Susanna wife of Edward Philpot & Eliz(th)., Mary, Jane, Humphrey, and John Posey. Now the records do not show who was the other of the "two sons", but one of them was certainly Benjamin and this is proved as follows.

On the 28th of May 1673 Thomas Allanson (sometimes written Allison) conveyed to John Posey a tract of 200 acres called St. Johns, and as the county records show that John Posey did not alienate this land, it must have passed by will or by descent. In 1717 we find John Posey, whom we have proved to be the son of Benjamin, leaving by will to his brother Francis Posey "my plantation St. Johns". How did he get it? Clearly by inheritance from his father Benjamin who must have been one of the "two sons" to whom their father John Posey (d. 1689) bequeathed "two tracts of land". Again we find that 22 May 1722 Thomas Allison of Charles Co. conveys to Francis Posey "all his right, title and interest in and to St. Johns" containing 200 acres formerly in the possession of John Posey.

You observe that he does not convey the tract itself, but his "rights, title and interest", so that he clearly executes the deed merely as the heir at law of Thomas Allison, who conveyed the land to John Posey in 1673, and the deed of 1722 was evidently intended to clear the title. In other words the deed of 1722 was merely a confirmation of the deed of 1673 for the heir at law of the original grantor. The reason for this confirmation is not stated, but for us the important fact is that it proves that it was the identical tract conveyed to John Posey in 1673. The Charles County rent roll of 1753 shows that St. Johns was at that time in the possession of Francis Posey, and it was doubtless part of the land bequeathed their son Belaine in 1774. To sum it up therefore, we have a rather practical demonstration that John Posey purchased St. Johns (200 acres) in 1673, and bequeathed two tracts of land to two of his

A Kirby Family Record – 60 Dr. Johnston’s Letter #2 about Posey Research (page 3) sons. In 1717 this tract is in the possession of John Posey (son of Benjamin) who bequeaths it to his brother Francis. There is no record of the transfer of this land from 1673, when it was acquired by John Posey, until 1722 when it was transferred to Francis Posey by Thomas Allison. It must therefore have passed by will or by descent. Therefore John Posey (son of Benjamin) who bequeaths it to his brother Francis could have acquired it in no other way than by descent from his father Benjamin and he in turn could only have acquired it by inheritance from his father John Posey. Consequently Benjamin Posey was one of the "two sons" of John Posey (died 1689) to whom their father left "two tracts of land", and St. Johns was the tract left Benjamin.

Our proof is thus complete, and there can be no possible doubt that Benjamin Posey (father of Francis Posey), was the son of John Posey who died in 1689. On no other supposition could the land have passed as it did. Perhaps you may find this explanation somewhat lengthy, but I wanted to make this matter quite clear and hope I have done so. I had hoped to find you another record in the Musgrove family, but in this I was disappointed. I was able however to trace the line back to Charles Musgrove (d. 1751) grandfather of Mary, wife of Benj. V. Posey, and it was necessary to work out the Musgrove family since it is the fact of Benj. V. Posey's marriage with Mary Musgrove that establishes his identity as your ancestor. Although your pedigree is otherwise clearly proved, it may be well to point out here that we get a confirmation from the names of some of Benj. V. Posey's children from the list you sent me. They are (a) Anne, named for her grandmother Anne wife of Francis Posey, (b) Sarah, named for her grandmother Sarah Truman Musgrove, wife of Charles Musgrove Jr. c) Frank named for his grandfather, Francis Posey. (d) Charles, named for his grandfather Charles Musgrove Jr. Taken in connection with the positive proof we have from other sources, these coincidences would afford strong confirmation if it were needed. Though for that matter, the line of proof is so strong that no confirmation is really needed.

I enclose the papers(2) of Mr. Addison F. Posey together with the notes I have gathered, and three pedigrees - one of your line of the Posey family, one of the Musgrove family, and one showing your line of decent from the Posey's and Musgroves. In case you desire it, and will send me the blanks, it will give me pleasure to make out your Colonial Dame Papers to the Posey line without additional charge.

Assuring you of my gratification at the successful termination of our quest, in which I have been greatly interested.

I am, very truly yours

/s/ Christopher Johnston

A Kirby Family Record – 68 Editor’s Notes – Terrell

There are parts of the alleged Terrell lineage originally presented by the compiler that have since been proven wrong (or at least disputed). The lineage that he used was primarily from “The Genealogy of Richmond & William Tyrrell or Terrell”, compiled by Joseph Henry Tyrrell [TYRRELL_JH], however parts of that are still disputed. O.F. Brown, in his “The Tyrells of England”, ([BROWN_OF]) refutes some relationships and, hence, pedigrees. Keeping that in mind, the original charts should be examined with a skeptical eye (actually, all should be when no references are provided). At the time of this original compilation this appeared to be the best information available, but we now know that this is not so.

Various sources have presented different ancestry for our Elizabeth Terrell (who we know married William Wilkins). Some sources appear to be derivative (i.e., echoing another source or family tradition without references). This does not mean that the information is incorrect, but without source references it’s impossible to know if the information is correct. Some of these sources with their lineages include: 1. From [TERRELL_TRAILS]: 1. William “Edmond” Terrell = (1) Mary Mallory

2. From [TERRELL_TRAILS]: 1. Capt. John Terrell (?-1692) = Lady Ann Johnston 1. William (1635-1727) = Susannah Waters 1. Robert (1688-?) = Mary Foster 1. William 1733-> 1780 = Mary Mallory 1. Elizabeth = William Wilkins

3. From [DICKEN]: 1. Richmond Terrell (1624-> 1658) 1. William (@1660-1727) = Susannah Waters 1. Timothy (@1705-1763) = Mary Martin 1. Elizabeth = William Wilkins

4. From [MEN_OF_MARK] (Vol 3, pp. 363-365)-nearly silent on dates: 1. William Terrell; of Hanover Co., VA 1721 1. Timothy 1. Robert Terrell of New Kent; 1. Robert of Orange; 1. Edmund; 1. William of Culpeper 1. Elizabeth = William Wilkins. m. at Richland, plantation of Anthony Hayney, in Culpeper, VA – then moved to Spartanburg, SC

Note 1: If we trust [DICKEN] enough we can see the dates espoused for the above people (see pages 19,41,43) and we see that Edmund was born in 1768 and knowing Elizabeth was born 1756 this disproves this lineage. Note 2: P. 51 of [DICKEN] shows that Edmund (b. 1740) of Robert Terrill and Mary Foster DID have a daughter Elizabeth Plunkett but she was born 1762 and married William Cornelius. [TYRRELL_JH, p. 26 (Chart 4)] shows that Edmond, of Orange Co., VA (1740-1784) m. 1760 Margaret Willis, so this marriage is too late for Elizabeth to be their daughter.

A Kirby Family Record – 69 Editor’s Notes – Terrell (cont.)

5. From [BARNHILL, pp. 6-9] (references [TYRRELL_JH] without changes) 1. Robert = Jane Baldwin (1617-?) 1. Timothy (1631-?) 1. Timothy = Elizabeth Foster 1. Robert (?-1786) = Mary Foster 1. William = Ann Daniel 1. Elizabeth Terrell = William Wilkins 2. Robert, Ann, Sarah, John, Edmund, Mary, Elizabeth

Note 1: [DICKEN, pp. 41-49] shows William (b. 1733) as marrying (1) Mary Mallory and (2) Ann Daniel. ET’s Uncles and Aunts are the same as are listed in [BARNHILL]. The paucity of proof of much of this source (although some info is usable) makes it difficult to take it seriously. On p. 9 she actually lists only 1 of the 16 children (of ET & WW) and says it is Moses Wilkins who was b. 10 Jun 1756; d. Dec 25 1820 (which are the DOB & DOD of E. Terrell=W. Wilkins). This is repeated again on p.11.

6. From [LANDRUM], pages 364-365 (this references the W. H. Terrell genealogy compilation [TERRELL_WHH] (but WHH appears silent on the lines that could remotely lead to ET=WW): 1. Sir Timothy Terrell 1. Robert Terrell; b. 1696 1. Edmond Terrell; “willed large tracts of land in Culpepper (sic) county by his father. Edmond left seven or nine children, of whom Mrs. Wilkins is believed to be one, as she was a member of the Culpepper branch of this family.”

Note: This is similar to [MEN_OF_MARK] and [BARNHILL], see those notes and observe that this Edmund was brother of William who married Mary & Ann.

As you can probably tell, my preferred source is [DICKEN (pages 232-234 & 258-160)] and here is why I believe her accounting of the parents of Elizabeth Terrell (see “Summary of American Lineage of Immigrant's Children [B]”): 1. Seven (7) of Elizabeth’s sixteen (16) children are names of the children of Timothy & Mary Martin (her hypothesized parents). No other purported parentage lists as many in common as this one. 2. Timothy and Mary had twins named Aaron & Moses; Elizabeth had twins who she chose to name Aaron & Moses. Page 256 of [DICKEN] says that Aaron, son of Timothy also had twins and named them Aaron & Moses. 3. Timothy’s daughter was called ‘Betty’ and b. 1756; Elizabeth was called ‘Betty’ or ‘Betsy’ and born 1756 (confirmed for our Elizabeth as seen by her tombstone in the Wilkins Burying Ground). Note 1: One could argue that Emma Dicken may have confused the Aaron & Moses as twins story between the children of Elizabeth & William Wilkins and those of Timothy & Mary. However, the fact that the purported brother (i.e., Aaron) of Elizabeth also had twins makes it seem so much more likely.

A Kirby Family Record – 70 Editor’s Notes – Terrell (cont.) Note 2: I examined Timothy Terril’s will and it does not mention the birth date of “Betty” in his will. I suspect that (on p. 233 when discussing his will and the children named in it) when Emma Dicken assigns the birth of Betty as b. 1756 it is because she knew that information from another source. Note that two of the people who provided information to Emma Dicken (on p. 260) are Mrs. Donaldson and W.J. Wilkins (both of whom corresponded with the compiler).

Concerns/issues: Some sources (all of the ones that seem to have gotten her parentage wrong) say that Elizabeth was from Culpeper Co. Va. 1. Elizabeth, as the daughter of Timothy & Mary, was born in North Carolina and not Culpeper Co., Virginia. However, Timothy lived in Hanover County Virginia early on. 2. In [LANDRUM] (p. 364) it says only that she “came from the Terrell family in Culpepper (sic) county, Va.” – which does not mean she was born there, but only that her family was from there. Also, on the same page, she “is believed to be” the daughter of Edmond Terrell of Culpeper, but we are pretty sure (lacking evidence and finding refutable evidence) that is not the case. The entire “Culpeper” statement may have been based on false information. 3. [MEN_OF_MARK] says she was married at Richland, plantation of Anthony Hayney, in Culpeper, VA and then they moved to Spartanburg, SC. If this is the source of the reference to Culpeper then, likewise, it doesn’t mean she was born there or ‘from‘ there. 4. Elizabeth’s husband, William Wilkins, was born in Culpeper Co., Virginia and his mother “may have been” a Haynie (which would explain getting married on “Anthony Hayney’s plantation” – of course Anthony was dead by 1660 years before the marriage).

This section contains: 1. Proposed English Pedigree of Some Immigrant ‘Terrell’ Ancestors. This combination/conglomeration chart is one I created for what is probably the last three (3) generations of the English ancestors of the early ‘Terrell’ immigrants to America. This is based, primarily, on the analysis of Mr. Don C. Terrill (current President of the Terrell Society of America) which itself is based (I believe) on the “latest” [BROWN_OF] work, in 1982, and work by Mr. John M. Tyrrill, Chairman of the Tyrrell Family History Society of the United Kingdom.

Note 1: This is a work in progress. This may be totally hypocritical, but I merged some information from “unsourced” references when I was comfortable that the information was consistent with other more reputable sources. I also do not provide line-by-line sources for much of this (because most is from the above work) and it’s not my intent to present an entire dissertation on the Terrell line for this compilation. Any errors in representation are mine, but I believe I did a reasonable job of capturing the essence of the connections and some of the confusions. I removed a lot of details and siblings and descendants from this SUMMARY chart. I may provide that in the future.

A Kirby Family Record – 81 Timothy Terrell

Timothy Terrell, son of William and Susannah Terrell, it is thought was born about 1705- 1710. They were then in New Kent in the section that became Hanover County in 1720. He died in Orange County, N.C. Feb. 1763. The date of his death is verified by his will dated 1 Feb. 1763, and probated at a session of court which convened the second Tuesday in Feb. 1763. (W.B. A pp. 29, 30). The county seat of Orange was then called Childsburg, but name later changed to Hillsboro, where Timothy Terrell’s will is still on file. Timothy must have married about 1731 and probably in Virginia, as it appears that he was in Va. 1741, when he acknowledged a deed in Caroline Court that he had made to John Terrell. It is believed that he and his brother John moved to N.C. about 1734-1744, probably after the death of their father William Terrell. He evidently settled first in Bladen County. In Colonial Records of N.C., Vol IV, p. 764, it is given that Timothy Terrell petitioned for a grant of 600 acres of land in Bladen County at a Council held at Newbern 10 Apr. 1745, present his Excellency Gabriel Johnston. He was appointed by the Governor as a Justice of the Peace for Bladen at a Council held at Newbern 11 Apr. 1749. Was reappointed 7 Apr. 1750, and again 1 Apr. 1751. (Vol. IV, pp. 951, 1046, 1243, Colonial Records)

Granville County was created 1746 from Edgecombe, and Johnston from Craven Co. the same year. In 1751 Orange County was formed from Granville, Johnston, and Bladen which may have placed the Timothy Terrell place in Orange, at any rate, he became a resident of Orange about that time.

In 1770 a part of Orange was divided into Chatham, Wake and Guilford, which placed the home place of Timothy Terrell in Chatham, but that was after his death. Some of his children lived in Chatham. The land records show that the Earl of Granville granted to Timothy Terrell 400 acres of land 6 Sept. 1754 on the head branches of Terrell’s Creek. (Bk. 12, p. 49). In 1756 he was granted land on Terrell’s Creek, a tributary of Haw River. He obtained other grants as shown by the land records, altogether amounting to more than 2,000 acres. John D. Terrell said that his great uncle Timothy was a man of wealth.

John D. Terrell also stated that Timothy Terrell married a Martin. That her name was Mary is shown in deeds made by Timothy and Mary Terrell, and in the administration of his estate she was mentioned as Mary Terrell. She was one of the executors of his will and John Pill, or Pile was the other.

Timothy Terrell and his wife, Mary Martin had fourteen children, all named in his will, though they may not be given in order of age.

(1) Jemimah, (2) Ruth, (3) Millie, (4) Solomon, (5) Micajah b. 1746, (6) James, called Nimrod, (7) Simon b. 1755, (8) Moses, (9) Mary, (10) Elizabeth, called Betty b. 1756 (Ed. note: the actual will makes no mention of her birth date/age), (11) Keziah, (12) Daniel, (13) Richard, (14) Aaron.

It is thought that Aaron and Moses were the twins. Timothy stated in his will that the first five children named had already received their allotment of his estate which suggests that they may have left the parental roof for homes of their own. He also gave his wife leave to give “to any of children that now live with us, when they marry or come of age, part of the stock that can be spared”. In reference to the legacies left to Nimrod, Simon, and Moses, they were not to have their allotment until they became of age. A Kirby Family Record – 82 Timothy Terrell (page 2) Aaron was to receive his after the death or marriage of his mother, when property she was to have use of for her widowhood, was to be divided among five of the sons named, Aaron and Moses included. He gave instructions about selling a tract of land he owned in Rowan Co.. The following is found in D.B. 6, p. 305, Rowan County, dated 16 Sept. 1765. Deed of Mary Terrell of Orange County, widow, to John Lewis, consideration 45 pounds lawful money of N.C., conveys 280 acres of land in Rowan County granted 24 June 1751 by the Earl of Granville to Timothy Terrell of Orange County, deceased, recorded in D.B. D. p. 540, Orange County, and Timothy by will 9 (?) Feb. 1763, made the said Mary his executrix, as shown by the will of record in Orange County, the land situated on the north fork of Pole Cat Creek, adjoining “now William and Jeremiah Reynolds…. To John Lewis line, etc.” . Witnesses Nimrod Terrell, Christopher Nation. Timothy Terrell and his wife Mary in 1753 deeded 639 acres of land to William Reynolds. It has been suggested that Jemimah Terrell may have married William Reynolds, but we have made no effort to find out.

Timothy Terrell in his will gave to his wife the use of certain land for her widowhood, 350 acres of which was for his son Nimrod, not then of age. Nimrod “was not to molest his mother of any of the land for her widowhood”.

On 20 March 1768 James, alias Nimrod Terrell, sold that land to his brother Solomon, which indicates that his mother had married again, or died.

The entire tract of land that Mary was to have use of for her widowhood was divided in 1768. In 1765 Mary Terrell, widow of Timothy Terrell, appeared in court, and exhibited the will. Three men were appointed to divide the land among the heirs named in the will, viz, Solomon, Nimrod, Simon, Aaron and Moses. At the time all the children were not of age, as Moses and Aaron in 1775 chose Isaac Brooks as their guardian. The report of the division was made in 1768.

Of the children of Timothy and Mary Terrell we have no record of Jemimah, Millie, Keziah, and Richard.

Solomon Terrell lived in Chatham County and died 1775. Timothy Terrell deeded his son Solomon 510 acres of land in 1758 and in his will 1763 mentioned “land that my son Solomon lives on.”. A guardian was appointed for the children of Solomon Terrell in 1775. They were Henry, ten years of age, and Abijah.

Mary Terrell, daughter of Timothy and Mary, m. Philemon Martin. He is supposed to have been the son of John and Rachel Martin as they had a son Philemon. John D. Terrell mentioned her as Molly Phil Martin. Not traced.

Daniel Terrell, son of Timothy and Mary, m. Hannah Thompson, sister of Sarah Thompson who married his brother Simon Terrell. Daniel died in Chatham County 1786, leaving a will in which he named his wife Hannah.

(Jeremiah (Ed. Note: she means Jemimah) the daughter of Timothy and Mary Martin Terrell, was I am sure married to William F. Reynolds, as I have his tombstone record. He was buried, and also, his son, William F. Reynolds, Jr. in the Goudelock Cemetery near Jonesville, South Carolina. I have made a list of the markers in this cemetery. My great grandfather is buried here, also, Millie Wilkins the wife of Davis Goudelock.---A.N.C) A Kirby Family Record – 83 Elizabeth Terrell

1. Wilkins Ancestry (traditional) I modified the format of this from the original compilation to make it easier for this digital version. Page 364 of [MEN_OF_MARK] says “Andrew’s son John settled in Northumberland County Virginia where he married a daughter of Richard Hayney. John’s son William married Elizabeth Terrell at Richland, in Culpeper, the plantation of Anthony Hayney, Then a Burgess of Northumberland county, and they moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Note 1: I can’t explain why this page (from the original) shows Robert Wilkins as father of John who married Elizabeth Haynie) when the referenced [MEN_OF_MARK] in the original clearly shows Andrew as the father. Since I don’t trust [MEN_OF_MARK] due to its lack of sources I can’t say what is correct (so far I’ve seen no proof for either). 2. A Kirby Family Record – 89 Wilkins Family Burying Ground (transcription)

The sketch has the following notations: 1. “Graveyard 200 yards from Goucher Creek Ford and 200 yards from old residence of Wm. Wilkins. Near Gaffney, S.C.” 2. A sketch of a “Water Oak” to the left of all of the tombstones. 3. In front of the entire graveyard is a line/wall that says “Old stone wall of Wilkins Family Burying Ground”. 4. “Grandmother’s parents” is written with an arc over the tombstones of Moses Wilkins & Sarah Lipscomb. (Ed. note: this was probably written by one of Bessie Wilkins’s children (Moses & Sarah would be their paternal grandparents)). Similarly, the compiler (i.e., TM Sr) wrote “May Kirby Thomas’ Great Grandparents” at the same place.

CORRESPONDENCE - #1

Gaffney, S.C. Sept. 2, 1923

My dear Mrs. Thomas,

“I am one and the same” who wrote you first about the Wilkins/Terrell line, since then I have written many, many letters, but have nothing definite as to who Elizabeth’s father and mother was, or I should have communicated with you sooner. As I said before, Eliz. W. is buried 12 miles from here, her headstone bears only two names Elizabeth Wilkins, though it is possible she had an Ann to her name. In looking over old data I have found women by this name Betty Elizabeth, both practically the same name.

Since writing you I have been in correspondence with a lady in Ga., in fact two of them. One, Mrs. D. says Elizabeth T. was da. of Capt. William Terrell, wife Mary Mallory, b. 1733 at Orange Springs, Orange Co., Va., d. after 1780. He was vestryman of St. Marks Parish Culpeper Co., Va., as late as 1780. This Capt. W. Terrell was son of Capt. Robert Terrell, and his wife Mary Foster.

Capt. Rob. Terrell was son of 1st Timothy Terrell and wife Susannah Randolph. Timothy T. was son of William and wife Susannah Waters. William T. son of John Terrel and his wife Lady Ann Johnson. Capt. John T. was the son of Sir Timothy Terrell who was member of Privy Council of King Charles 1st, married Elizabeth, dau. of Dr. James Usher, Archbishop of Iceland. According to her our William W. who married Betsy Terrel was a Capt. in the Rev. war. Now I have written to Washington for his record, and received reply that there was a W.W. serving in the Rev. with the dates I sent, but did not rank his as Capt. However they said the records were very incomplete, and advised me to write to the Historical Society of N.C. for further information, this I did but have not received any reply, so far,. I am going to make out the DAR line though and see if I can get it through. We always thought he did not fight because the King gave him large grants of land, in what was Sparkesbury Co. then.

Tradition said E.T. ran away at the age of 13 and married. She had 16 children.

Now when I can have the old Wilkins house (picture) copies made I will be glad to send you one.

Do you know whether you have the correct coat of arms, the Leopards ___ ? Have you ever had it fixed? And have you the crest too?

A lady from Ga. Sent me a pencil drawing of the Terrell family coat of arms, altogether different. She had the crest too, it was pretty, but I wonder which is correct. It is in the form of a shiled with several bars across it, and what looks like an animals’ head at the bottom. The crest is very pretty, can’t tell you what if is, but looks like a full sheaf of something, but very attractive. See if you can untangle this.

Have you , or do you know anything about the Lipscomb coat of arms? While I do not belong on Lip. Line am very close to it. Three fourths of our chapter here joined on the Lipscomb line. If I get the W.W. line through and you care for it, will be glad to send it to you.

With best wishes Very cordially yours,

Bessie M. Wilkins Mrs. W. J. Wilkins

Mrs. W. J. Wilkins E. Montgomery St. Gaffney, S.C. April 30, ‘24

My dear Mrs. Thomas,

I know you think I never expect to reply to your letter. Well, my Wilkins papers were all O.K., and am sending your copy so you can see exactly the record. Much to my surprise, they were sent back verified by another member, now who in the world established the line I don’t know but I do know various ones had tried time and again without success but you see by the verification that somebody has. Any how you can use it as a supplementary as I did. I feel sure we can get another line a little further back, on Betsy’s side (a John Terrell) who served as (vestry man so called but who really were judges or Gov. or something of the sort. I am working on that now.

Many thanks for the little drawing of the coat of arms. The same day I received yours, I also received a copy and a pamphlet from a lady in Ga., Mrs. Pike, who is also “kin to us”. She sent me to (read and return) Genealogical Notes of the Tyrrell and Terrell family of Va. and its English and Norman French Progressives (sic) by Edwin Terrell San Antone Texas, perhaps you have the same, it was very interesting. Mrs. Pike has joined the Daughters of the American Colonies on her data.

I have just had the coat of arms painted and ready for framing , and it is lovely, one of the prettiest I ever saw. I used (the one you sent) as after consulting the Terrell pamphlet, it gave yours as the correct one without the lines (and which I like very much better). I wish I could get hold of the Wilkins coat of arms. I have some data on it, but am not sure it is correct, and I don’t want it unless I am absolutely sure on the subject.

I am sending you a picture of the old Wilkins house. I only have one of the graves and (I don’t want to lose it) I had some made from the (original) of the house, but the photographer said the graves were not plain enough to make a satisfactory picture. You will have to come out and see us and I will take you to the graves and house. It’s only 12 miles from here.

According to Mrs. Donaldson William Terrel was Betsy’s father and Robert was her grandfather and I believe she is right about this. But it certainly is a puzzle, so many names alike.

Well, I hope I have not “bored” you. I am “daft” on the subject of lines, is my only excuse.

With very best wishes

I am your cousin,

Bessie M. Wilkins

Gaffney, S.C. Aug. 21, 1928

My dear Mrs. Thomas,

Your letter was received and read with interest and I should have replied sooner, but have had sickness and also the advent of a new grandbaby in the houme, has kept me quite busy.

Time for family history.

Most of my data on the Wilkins Terrell line is that of Mrs. Donalson of Ga., name of our relative, and I feel sure you have all that. If not I will be glad to send it to you.

I don’t know whether Betsy Wilkins’s name was Ann or not. The tombstone does not say so but it could have been you know, and not be on the tombstone. Anyhwere that I have seen mention of her only Betsy or Elizabeth is given as name. Still it’s very likely that she had a second name Ann. I don’t know whether I told you, that I established a DAR line on William Wilkins. Have you seen the Tyrrell-Terrell Family of Virginia and its English and Norman French Progenitor by Edwin H. Terrell, of San Antonia Texas. I have this, from this and with the aid of Gen. Heraldry Book at Library. I have worked out beautiful coat of arms of Terrell family. I will be glad to send you this pamphlet if you haven’t seen it. Dr. William Anderson of Blackeburg has an interesting history of the Terrell Wynn family which might be of interest to you and I am sure he would be glad for you to see it. He is related to us, (or connected) I think his step-mother was a Wilkins. If you ahven’t the data by MRs. Donalson, and will let me know, I will be glad to send mine, it also gives the Lipscomb line. I am still very much interested in “past history”, but som many things to occupy mind and time, don’t do so much of it as formerly.

So sorry to hear of the sadness in your family. I saw where a Mr. Kirby of Newnan Ga. died recently. I suppose he was your brother. Life is full of sorrow, and we all have our turns. No one is slighted.

With very best wishes

I am cordially yours,

Bessie M. Wilkins

Dear Terrell, I hand you the family dates, which I have been able to get. I talked with Inez S. Kirby, yesterday, she gave me dates for herself, and her husband, who died in 1916. Hope these dates will help you with your papers. My love to sister May, and with best wishes & love for you and yours,

Dear Aunt Lillian,

I have not seen you in many years, but you will probably recall that I looked you up in Newnan once with Mrs. Marshall, sometime in the late thirties, probably.

I am trying to compile a family history, or rather simple factual information as to dates and places, for my grandmother, Mrs. Thomas, here, and also for myself. Unfortunately, she is not at all well…

I am wondering if you can help me get started…by filling all blanks where you can…

I have not been to Georgia in some time, but my brother, who is a Colonel in the Army, was transferred after coming back from Korea, to Camp McPherson in Atlanta, and has written that he looked up May’s child, who is now May Kirby Young…

Sincerely Yours,

Terrell Marshall

Dear Terrell, I hand you the information I could get; most of it from the markers at the cemetery.

Ina Kirby was a member of the DAR organization and took active interest in it until a couple of years before her death.

If I can help you further, let me know. Quite well do I remember you and your attractive and great looking wife. Best wishes to you both. My love to sister May.

It was a pleasure to get your letter of March 24, and I thank you too for filling in the sheet of family data for me….

I had a letter from Ben Kirby, who furnished a little information, and said he would call me on his next trip through Little Rock. …I will remember you to my grandmother when I next go by.

A Kirby Family Record – 99 CORRESPONDENCE - #6

Mr. Terrell Marshall 1604 East Main Street, Attorney At law Spartanburg, S.C. Pyramid Building March 17, 1962 Little Rock, Arkansas

Dear Mr. Marshall:

Your letter of March 13th came yesterday and the family data arrived today. Thank you so much for both. The data has been beautifully typed and compiled well.

The house drawing was very much needed, as I did not have one, but I have tried to find a picture and I certainly do appreciate it. It appears to be the South end of the house which I think might be overlooking the cemetery. I have visited the old home place in the last two years several times, but there is not very much to see – only a few rock of the chimney is all. The cemetery is in a terrible shape. The owner, which is, I understand, one of the descendant of John Wilkins, a son of William sold the timber rights several years ago and did not reserve the cemetery plot, so all the beautiful old cedars and oaks were cut and let fall on the graves, breaking the tombstones. I think that it is terrible to even think of a person being so thoughtless of a cemetery.

Mr. W.R. Wilkins, of Pacolet, South Carolina and myself needed some dates from the cemetery, so this is the way we found out about the condition of it. Mr. Wilkins immediately contacted the man who bought the timber and made him clean all the trash from the cemetery, also made him repair the tombstones but they are not in first class. I will try to make some pictures for you the next time I go there, which I hope will be before the snakes wake up from their winter nap. The tombstones of William and Elizabeth are most pass reading.

In my records on Richard Haynie I, I have his wife as Jane Bridger, daughter of Richard Bridger and Elizabeth (Foster) Bridger. The Bridger family was in Northumberland county, Virginia when Richard died. Also, the friend of William Wilkins, who was an Indian fighter was my ancestor, Adam Goudelock (sometimes spelled Goudylock). William Wilkins, had a daughter, Millicent (called Milly) that married Davis Goudelock, the son of Adam. I am working on this family also. If only I had the money I would have a great time pulling out the skeletons or as my son says “communicating with the dead”.

Sincerely Yours,

Agnes Nesbitt Clark

P.S. Have you seen the “Terrell” Genealogy put out by Emma Dicken, Meridian, Mississippi? She says that our line of Terrells came from Timothy Terrell and Mary Martin. His will is still on file in Chatham County, N.C. She spent a life time in research on this family and just as it was finished passed away. She has named all of Timothy’s children and the deeds are right but I have not checked all of her work so can not say that she is correct on all of it. If you can get one of her books, please read and see what you think. If you would like for me to copy what she has to say on the Timothy and Mary Martin Terrell family I will or I will send you my book to look over.

CORRESPONDENCE - #7

March 29, 1962

Mrs. Newton T. Clark 1604 East Main Street Spartanburg, South Carolina,

Dear Mrs. Clark:

I received your letter of March 17 and am glad you liked the data sent. Don’t hesitate to change anything where you think you have a more accurate record for I realize there are inconsistencies in my own record. I would, however, appreciate your letting me know what changes you think are in order after you have time to go over it fully.

My grandmother, Mrs. L. P Thomas, who died here at 93 in 1954 supplied me with most of this data except as to descendants of the current generations which I procured by correspondence. The cemetery and Wilkins home drawings, of course, were done long ago and I can understand things happening to them since but it is too bad. If I can ever get over that way I will try to look you up and see these old sites.

You state that the Bridger family was in Northumberland County, Virginia, when Richard Haynie died but since my record refers to his will being proven in Northampton County, North Carolina, he must have at least have had land there. Perhaps the Bridges which I have should read Bridger. AS to your reference to your ancestor, Adam Goudelock (sometimes spelled Goudylock) I take it I have this as Adam Grande Cock. I suppose I should simply change this to conform with your information.

As to the “Terrell” Genealogy by Emma Dicken, I would appreciate your copying what she has on the Timothy Terrell and Mary Martin family as you suggested instead of sending me the book in the beginning.

You refer to Mrs. W. R. Wilkins of Pacolet, South Carolina, and I think I included correspondence from Mrs. W. J. Wilkins to my grandmother in what I sent you. What is this relationship ?

Sincerely Yours,

Terrell Marshall

A Kirby Family Record – 104 RESOLUTION OF COLONIAL DAMES

Mrs. Lovick Pierce Thomas III

Rest, the reward of a long, full life, came to Mrs. Thomas July 28, 1954.

She was born May Kirby, in Newnan, Georgia, the daughter of John Terrell Kirby and Lovanna (sic) Bohannon. She married Lovick Pierce Thomas III, in Newnan, Georgia, and they lived in Atlanta until they moved to Little Rock in 1890, where she spent the rest of her life.

They were the parents of four children: May (Mrs. James C. Milam, Atlanta), Jenice (Mrs. Charles H. Small, Washington, D.C.), Lovick Pierce Thomas IV, New Orleans, and Ina (Mrs. Marvin Harris, Little Rock).

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Marvin Harris, and by five grandchildren: Terrell Marshall, Little Rock; Lt. Col. Joseph Marshall, Washington, D.C.; Thomas Everett Harris, Washington, D.C.; Lovick Pierce Thomas V, Houston, Texas; and Mrs. Raymond Young, Atlanta, Georgia.

Mrs. Thomas joined the Colonial Dames through Maryland in 1905; her Arkansas number was 47; she joined the Society through her mother’s ancestor, Francis Posey, who received a commission from the King July 15, 1624, to assist in colonizing and governing Virginia. He came to America in 1638 and settled on his father’s grant of land, in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, and served as Burgess for the St. Clement’s Hundred in 1650. Other distinguished ancestors were Richard Haynie and William Terrell; through the Terrells, Mrs. Thomas’ ancestry can be traced to the time of William the Conqueror, and she was descended from nine of the Barons who signed the Magna Charta.

Mrs. Thomas was endowed with a keen intelligence, a fine mind, an interest in current affairs, and in good literature. She was a woman of great charm and gracious manner.

In her long life she knew happiness, but also sorrow, in the deaths of her husband and three of their children.

Now the laborer’s task is o’er; Now the battle day is past; Now upon the farther Shore Lands the Voyager at last.
