It’s Over Scott Made Me Funky The 808 Is Coming (DJ Pooh Remix) When Boogie Down Productions’ DJ/producer/hypeman D-Nice went solo in 1990, the world wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Taking over as KRS-One’s DJ after Scott La Rock’s murder in 1987, D-Nice was a relative unknown, despite having played a part in the group’s classic albums By All Means Necessary and the follow-up Edutainment. Setting out to make his name as an independent artist, he delivered Call Me D-Nice, an album that abandoned BDP’s militant political rhetoric in favor of a fun, upbeat attitude that played to his strengths: witty and boastful rhymes backed by funky, sample-based beats. The album yielded a #1 hit with the title track (along with “Crumbs On the Table”, which made the Top 20) and proved that D-Nice could do much more than just play the background. Out of print for over 20 years, D-Nice’s debut album Call Me D-Nice returns in an expanded edition housed in a 6-panel digipak featuring original and extended artwork with liner notes for the bonus cuts written by Noah Uman. Extended Audio includes 2 non-album cuts (produced by Scott La Rock) as well as 12" mixes and instrumentals previously unavailable on CD format. Also includes the 12" singles "Glory" and "The TR 808 Is Coming." FORMAT: CD • CAT NO: GET 51271 • LABEL: Get On Down • STREET DATE: May 3rd AUGUSTUS PABLO Ital Dub 1. The Big R P-Off 5. Gun Trade 9. Shake Down By the time he released Ital Dub in 1975, Augus- tus Pablo was already a household name in Jamaica. He was fresh off the success of his album Rebel Rock Reggae, and about to enter the most prolific period of his career with legen- dary dub engineer King Tubby, this being their first collaboration. Recorded and mixed by Tubby at his studio, Ital Dub, produced by Tommy Cowan and Warwick Lyn, features Pablo lending his signature melodica work to originals (“Eli’s Move,” “Shake Up”) and covers from Bob Marley (“Rebel Music,” “Natty Dread”), Peter Tosh (“Funeral”) and Junior Byles (“Curly Locks,” “Irie Feelings”). Overlooked at the time of its initial release, Ital Dub has since been recog- nized as a worthy entry in Pablo’s stellar catalog and “one of the most innovative albums of the decade” (AllMusic.com). After producing top quality reissues from Lee “Scratch” Perry and King Tubby, Get On Down is proud to present another Jamaican dub classic, featuring a new digital audio transfer from the original analog tapes. Caroline’s Crawford’s career first began at the age of 15 on Motown Records where she recorded loads of songs but released relatively few! She re-surfaced on Philadelphia International in the early ‘70s with one brilliant single and a completely unreleased album, which stayed in the can as a result of disagreements with Gamble & Huff. An uncompromising singer, she teamed up with Hamilton Bohannon and sang background on his hits “South African Man”, “Foot Stomping’ Man” and “Summertime Groove”. Bohannon wrote, produced, arranged and directed the seven cuts. All Music Guide’s Andrew Hamilton writes: “His patented rhythmic, shuffling sound interspersed with some KEY SELLING POINTS: ballads make this an extension of his ”Summertime Groove” album which featured • First time ever on CD. Crawford’s vibrant vocals. This is good. • Remastered from the original Mercury analog tapes. Fab’ likes to have his “ronron at the Drugstore”, as Dutronc sang it (an untranslatable wordplay on ronron, “cat food”, and a minet - “a kitten” - purring). Fabrice attends Henri IV prestigious high-school; his father, a businessman who made a fortune selling plastic flowers, and his mother, a former model from Jacques Fath, are never home – a cosy home indeed! With his Weston shoes, a slim-fitting suit by Renoma and his haircut modelled on those of Anglo-Saxons musicians appearing on French Eps, Fabrice dreams of Carnaby Street and the Sunset Strip. He is not alone: there’s his sister Stéphanie, 16, who wears a fringe, a mock Courrèges dress, a pink Shetland pullover and white boots. Stéphanie reads Salut Les Copains and Mademoiselle Age Tendre, which both fuel her passion for Françoise Hardy, Zouzou, Twiggy and the Beatles. The Groove Club is happy to present twenty-two records that we dug out as a tribute to Fabrice’s kinky faves.

MA Thesis Creative Industries. Date of submission: 6 Aug. 2018 Supervisor: dr. Vincent Meelberg Email: [email protected] Abstract. Within our capitalistic society, much if not all the music we consume is to be regarded as commodities. Musical products are subject to numerous processes, rules and regulations, one of which being copyright. Essentially, copyright enables the musical product as commodity, and as David Hesmondhalgh puts it, has become the main means of commodifying culture. A musical practice that is particularly at odds with copyright is sampling, which makes use of previously recorded material through recombination and re-contextualisation. For the use of samples, a proper copyright license must be in place, whether the sample-based song is being monetized on or released for free. However, hip hop producers often do not comply in licensing the use of copyrighted material in their music, which challenges not only the copyright regime, but also copyright as a means of commodification. Over the years, copyright has become an extensive set of rights, resulting in the criminalization of unlicensed use of samples, but not in prevention, as technological advancements have made sampling a more widespread and accessible practice. Within this thesis, the sample-based work of Madlib as released on his Madlib Invazion label is used as a case study to map the current copyright regime, the costs of licensing and the risks of unlicensed sampling.

  • Mose Davis Public Relations Information
Mose Davis Public Relations Information “My name is Mose…and you can call me Mose” – Mose Davis That quote from Mose Davis can be heard on Hamilton Bohannon’s hit record “Let’s Start the Dance”. The tune is a smoking-hot club classic. And the quote cuts through the clutter and camouflage of funk wannabes, to reveal a pure fact – Mose is Mose. Before Stevie Wonder, before Bernie Worrell, there was Mose Davis pushing the frontiers of funk with his use of the organ as the source of the bass line, during the late 1960’s. And if imitation is the highest form of flattery, then Mose Davis has been flattered by the best. And some of the biggest names in hip-hop have sampled a sip of Mose’s musical brew, including Snoop, Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah. Classically trained at the Detroit Conservatory of Music, Mose Davis is an exceptional jazz artist and prominent fixture on the Atlanta music scene. Davis identifies jazz greats, Jimmy Smith and Ahmad Jamal among his musical influences. Davis performs with top acts across the country and internationally. Mose Davis has performed with Candi Staton, The Isley Brothers, Marlena Shaw, David Ruffin, Ray Parker, Jr., The Counts, Funkadelics and Carl Anderson. His festival appearances include The Atlanta Jazz Festival (with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra), The Macon Jazz Festival and the internationally renowned Spoleto Festival. And now comes the new CD, “Sunshine”. “It’s a mix of jazz – the rough and the smooth – blended with some Latin and rock influences,” Davis says.

Lyricist’s Lyrical Lyrics: Widening the Scope 1 of Poetry Studies by Claiming the Obvious Geert Buelens Utrecht University/ Stellenbosch University [email protected] Poetry is all but absent from Cultural Studies. Most treatments of the genre tend to focus on canonized poets whose work is wilfully difficult and obscure. Alternative histories should be explored, opening up possibilities to view poetry again as a culturally relevant art form. The demotic and popular strain provides a case in point. From the Romantics onwards modern poetry linked itself with oral or folk traditions like the ballad. Socially the most popular of these forms is the pop lyric. Since the 1950s rock lyrics have been studied in Social Studies, Cultural Studies, Musicology and some English Departments, but rarely within the context of Poetics or Comparative Literature. Rap and canonized singer-songwriters like Dylan and Cohen are the exceptions to the rule. Systematic attention to both lyrics and performance may open up current ideas of what a poem is and how it works. 1 This article is the non copy-edited draft of a paper presented at the 2011 ACSIS conference ‘Current Issues in European Cultural Studies’, Norrköping, 15-17 June 2011 within the session ‘Revisiting the Literary Within Cultural Studies’. 495 LYRICIST’s LYRICAL LYRICS: WIDENING THE SKOPE OF POETRY STUDIES BY CLAIMING THE OBVIOUS Listen – I’m not dissin but there’s something that you’re missin Maybe you should touch reality KRS-One/Boogie Down Productions, ‘Poetry’ (1987) (in Bradley&DuBois 2010, 145) It is a truism of sorts to claim that Cultural Studies tries to understand the world we live in and to explain how cultural artefacts both reflect and construct that world and its inherent political tensions.
