MA Thesis Creative Industries. Date of submission: 6 Aug. 2018 Supervisor: dr. Vincent Meelberg Email: [email protected] Abstract. Within our capitalistic society, much if not all the music we consume is to be regarded as commodities. Musical products are subject to numerous processes, rules and regulations, one of which being copyright. Essentially, copyright enables the musical product as commodity, and as David Hesmondhalgh puts it, has become the main means of commodifying culture. A musical practice that is particularly at odds with copyright is sampling, which makes use of previously recorded material through recombination and re-contextualisation. For the use of samples, a proper copyright license must be in place, whether the sample-based song is being monetized on or released for free. However, hip hop producers often do not comply in licensing the use of copyrighted material in their music, which challenges not only the copyright regime, but also copyright as a means of commodification. Over the years, copyright has become an extensive set of rights, resulting in the criminalization of unlicensed use of samples, but not in prevention, as technological advancements have made sampling a more widespread and accessible practice. Within this thesis, the sample-based work of Madlib as released on his Madlib Invazion label is used as a case study to map the current copyright regime, the costs of licensing and the risks of unlicensed sampling. -

WXYC Brings You Gems from the Treasure of UNC's Southern
IN/AUDIBLE LETTER FROM THE EDITOR a publication of N/AUDIBLE is the irregular newsletter of WXYC – your favorite Chapel Hill radio WXYC 89.3 FM station that broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week out of the Student Union on the UNC campus. The last time this publication came out in 2002, WXYC was CB 5210 Carolina Union Icelebrating its 25th year of existence as the student-run radio station at the University of Chapel Hill, NC 27599 North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This year we celebrate another big event – our tenth anni- USA versary as the first radio station in the world to simulcast our signal over the Internet. As we celebrate this exciting event and reflect on the ingenuity of a few gifted people who took (919) 962-7768 local radio to the next level and beyond Chapel Hill, we can wonder request line: (919) 962-8989 if the future of radio is no longer in the stereo of our living rooms but on the World Wide Web. http://www.wxyc.org As always, new technology brings change that is both exciting [email protected] and scary. Local radio stations and the dedicated DJs and staffs who operate them are an integral part of vibrant local music communities, like the one we are lucky to have here in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Staff NICOLE BOGAS area. With the proliferation of music services like XM satellite radio Editor-in-Chief and Live-365 Internet radio servers, it sometimes seems like the future EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Nicole Bogas of local radio is doomed. -

Wagner College to Stage Galt Macdermot-Matty Selman Musical 'Goddess Wheel'
March 29, 2012 Wagner College to Stage Galt MacDermot-Matty Selman Musical ‘Goddess Wheel’ By ADAM HETRICK The Lysistrata-inspired musical “Goddess Wheel,” by Tony Award winner Galt MacDermot and Matty Selman, will receive an April staging at Wagner College. “Goddess Wheel,” according to Wagner, “tells the story of the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens. The women, fed up with the war, decide to withhold sex until the men sign a peace treaty bringing the war to an end.” It has music by MacDermot (“Hair,” “Two Gentleman of Verona”) and book and lyrics by Selman, both of whom are Staten Island natives. The musical was first staged at the American Repertory Theater and the Prince Music Theatre under the title “Lysistrata” in 2002. Cherry Jones starred in the central role. NYU’s CAP 21 program also offered a developmental production of “Goddess Wheel” in 2005. Rusty Curcio will direct the production that has musical direction by James Higgins. The band for “Goddess Wheel” will be MacDermot’s New Pulse Jazz Band. Performances run April 18-29. The cast will include Danielle Dallacco as Lysistrata; Leighann Colin as Penelope/Persephone; Ilana Bolotsky as Young Widow; Tara Kirk and Ashley Burger as Women of Sparta; Caroline LaTorre, Heather Kirschenbauer and Erica Weiderlight as Goddesses; Matt Sydney as the Chancellor; Ryan Cole as the Spartan Envoy/Soldier Ghost; and Andrew Khouri and Matt Favetta as Men of Athens. John Jamiel, head of acting at Wagner, plays Oracle/Hates. Wagner College's athletes are also featured in the production as Spartans. For tickets phone (718) 390-3259. -

Hip Hop As English Curriculum A
BETWEEN THE LINES: HIP HOP AS ENGLISH CURRICULUM A THESIS Presented to the University Honors Program California State University, Long Beach In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the University Honors Program Certificate William Godbey Spring 2018 1 2 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the help and guidance of my advisor, Professor David Hernandez. This was a somewhat unorthodox topic, yet he not only took it in stride, he believed in my ability to continue the conversation on this topic in a new and insightful way. I owe him great thanks for this. I would also like to thank my family for their never-ending support and love not only through this process, but through the entirety of my college experience. Especially to my mother, who was always a phone call away if I ever needed assistance or to touch base back home. I owe you all so much for your encouragement and belief in me. and to Breanika Schwenkler, for always having my back. 3 ABSTRACT Between the Lines: Hip Hop as English Curriculum By William Godbey Spring 2018 This thesis examines the effectiveness of introducing hip hop into English curriculum at a high school level. To showcase this, this thesis presents a framework, broken up into three sections, that highlight the ways hip hop lyrics can be used to teach a variety of different literary devices, historical contexts, and how to analyze a text beyond its surface value. The three sections include Simple Literary Devices, Complex Literary Devices, and Contexts. Each section is demonstrated with a unique song and artists, to show how this framework could function as well as the versatility of talent in hip hop. -
