RICH FETCHIET Coordinator of Baseball Umpires

Rich Fetchiet was named Big 12 Conference Coordinator of Baseball Umpires in August 2005. He has over 35 years of collegiate, national and international umpiring and umpire-related administrative experience.

Fetchiet is currently the Coordinator of Baseball Umpires for the Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Mid-American and Missouri Valley Conferences, as well as Conference USA and the Horizon and Summit Leagues. He is a member of the NCAA National Umpire Program Advisory Committee in addition to the NCAA Baseball Rules Editorial Committee. Rich has served as the Baseball Secretary-Rules Editor for the NCAA and Chair of the ABCA Rules Committee. He is active in numerous officiating organizations and is a teacher and instructor at umpire camps and clinics across the country.

Fetchiet retired from active umpiring after the 2000 season. Prior to that he umpired numerous Division I conference tournaments and made three College World Series appearances, including serving as the plate umpire for the 1999 national championship game. Included among Rich’s international tournaments are the Pan Am Games, World Cup Qualifyer, Intercontinental Cup, World Championships, the Baltimore Orioles vs. Cuban National Team Friendship Game, and the Olympic Games. In 1997 the International Baseball Association named him Umpire of the Year. In 2012, Fetchiet became only the second umpire ever inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

Fetchiet is a higher education administrator at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Rich and his wife, Kay, and two children currently reside in Ann Arbor, Mich.

BIG 12 SPORTSMANSHIP STATEMENT

The member institutions of the Big 12 Conference are committed to competition in an arena where sportsmanship and the sense of fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, within the community or in the classroom, those who make up the Big 12 - its administrators, coaches, game officials and student-athletes - support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. At the heart of sportsmanship is the commitment of the institutions towards respect for the opposition and those officiating contests in the 23 sports sponsored by the Big 12. It is with a sense of fair play that a true sporting demeanor in the spirit of intercollegiate competition can be created and maintained with a total regard for the welfare of student-athletes, coaches, support personnel and spectators. Sportsmanship on the field of play is governed by Conference rules and guidelines, as well as those established under the NCAA and amateur organizations. It is the responsibility of game officials and administrators to see to strict adherence to these guidelines. The behavior of spectators is managed by event personnel, who are encouraged to deal with interference or abuse of appropriate sporting behavior in the strictest of methods. The Big 12 Conference and its member institutions appreciate the support of the majority of fans who wish to create an atmosphere of competition that allows the participants to showcase the game and their respective skills.
