• He reached the half-century RBI mark in the first inning of Saturday’s game, driving in a pair of runs with a booming double to deep right-center field for his 50th and 51st runs batted in of the 2021 season.

• Luevano, whose nine home runs this year are tied for the most in the WCC, transferred to San Diego from Creighton, where he played his junior and senior years as a two-year starter at shortstop.

• Prior to Creighton, he spent two seasons at Moorpark College (2015-16), utilizing a redshirt in 2016 due to injury.

• A native of Santa Clarita, California, Luevano is batting .336 through all 36 of USD’s games so far this season, primarily spending time as the team’s designated hitter.

JEFFERIS JUMPSTARTS USD OFFENSE • Sophomore shortstop Cody Jefferis has been perhaps the Toreros’ most consistent hitter thus far, posting a .343 (47-137) batting average with 28 RBIs, 28 runs scored, 10 doubles, and 62 total bases though all 36 of San Diego’s games.

• One of just three USD players to have started every game and the only one to have started every game at one position, Jefferis kept up his productive ways at the plate against Pepperdine, going 4-10 (.400) in the weekend series with four RBIs, four runs scored, a triple, and three walks, including a free pass that loaded the bases in the ninth inning of Sunday’s contest and set the stage for the Toreros’ walk-off victory.

• The Valencia, California native has also provided plus defense up the middle, frequently saving runs and taking hits away with his diving stops and heads-up plays.

CALEB IS CLUTCH • Sophomore first baseman Caleb Ricketts continued his steady improvement at the plate against Pepperdine, notching a hit in every game against the Waves to go 4-13 (.307) on the weekend with five RBIs, three runs scored, and a double. • Ricketts provided perhaps the Toreros’ most clutch hit in recent memory on Sunday, clearing the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning with an opposite field, three-RBI double that brought USD to within one run of the Waves before it earned a walk-off win several batters later.

• The Orange County, California native has raised his batting average 58 points in the last month, and now has a .273 (36-132) average in 2021 through 34 games with a pair of home runs, 10 doubles, and 17 RBIs to his credit.

CONSISTENCY FROM COSTELLO • True freshman Jack Costello has impressed in his first college season, batting .355 (43-121) with 18 RBIs, 10 doubles, two triples, and two home runs so far in 2021.

• His hot start to the season has included a 12-game hit streak (3/4-3/23), two three-game hit streaks (3/30-4/3 and 4/16-4/18), and 14 multi-hit games.

• The Simi Valley, California native’s 12-game hit streak included strings of five games in a row with two hits (3/5-3/13), four games in a row with two hits (3/14-3/21), and concluded with a five-hit night on 3/23 at USC.

• This past weekend against Pepperdine, Costello turned in another strong series, adding three hits, four RBIs, two runs scored, and a home run in three games versus the Waves.

• On Sunday, the true freshman worked a full count in the bottom of the ninth inning then delivered a clutch, game-tying RBI single to left field, plating fellow true freshman Dustin Allen to knot the game at nine runs apiece before Thomas Luevano walked it off to earn USD a 10-9 victory.

• His .355 batting average ranks fifth in the WCC and is first among all qualified first-year players in the conference.

• On March 25, Costello was one of ten players named to Baseball America’s Freshman of the Year award watch list.

REMARKABLE START FOR ROBINSON • Redshirt sophomore righty Ryan Robinson has been as trustworthy as they come out of the bullpen for the Toreros, allowing just one earned run in 14 relief appearances (20.0 innings pitched), good for a minuscule 0.44 ERA.

• Last weekend versus Pepperdine, the Ohlone College (Fremont, CA) transfer turned in 3.1 total scoreless frames across two appearances (Friday, 4/30 and Sunday, 5/3) while setting a new career high in strikeouts on Friday (four) enroute to six total K’s.

ROMERO STRONG OUT OF BULLPEN • True freshman Ivran Romero (Poway High School) has allowed just 10 earned runs in 34 innings pitched so far this season, giving him a 2.65 ERA in 14 appearances out of the bullpen. • Nearly all of the young right-hander’s outings have come in high-leverage situations, and the San Diego native has pitched three innings or more across eight of his 16 relief appearances and one spot start so far this season.

• Romero began his college career by throwing 20 consecutive scoreless innings in relief, not allowing a run until April 2 at Cal State Fullerton.

SHAW SHUTTING IT DOWN LATE • Graduate student Kieran Shaw has hit his stride as of late, surrendering just four runs in his last 26 innings pitched while recording saves in his last four outings for a team- leading total of eight on the year so far that is tied for first in the conference.

• Shaw, a transfer from Harvard who set the Ivy League record for most saves in a season (13), has struck out 36 batters in 2021, good for third-best on the USD roster behind two starting pitchers (J. Miller and Thurman).

• On April 29, Shaw was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s 2021 Stopper of the Year Award Midseason Watch List.

RBI MACHINES • San Diego’s explosive start at the plate in 2021 has helped vault four Toreros to the top 20 of the WCC’s offensive leaderboards.

• Graduate student Thomas Luevano (first, 53 RBIs), senior Adam Lopez (tied for third, 34 RBIs), sophomore Cody Jefferis (eighth, 28 RBIs), junior Shane McGuire (tied for 12th, 26 RBIs), and graduate student Paul Kunst (tied for 16th, 24 RBIs), each own a spot on the conference’s list of top RBI producers.

QUALITY AT-BATS • Similarly, three Toreros have found themselves ranked in the NCAA’s top 25 list of “Toughest players to Strike Out.”

• Adam Lopez leads the team with a ranking of No. 2, Jack Costello came in at No. 16, Shane McGuire checked in at No. 20, Tora Otsuka was No. 21, and Paul Kunst ranks No. 25.

TORERO BATS LEAD THE WAY • San Diego’s offense as a whole is also either first or second in several categories within the conference.

Those categories include: • Batting average (.301), First in the WCC • Doubles (89), First in the WCC • RBIs (247), First in the WCC • On-base percentage (.389), First in the WCC • Slugging percentage (.447), First in the WCC • Runs scored (270), Second in the WCC by two runs to Gonzaga

• Additionally, San Diego’s 158 total strikeouts at the plate are the fewest in the WCC by a 82-strikeout margin.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE • USD’s team batting average (.301) ranks 20th in the nation, and the Toreros’ hot start at the plate has propelled the team into the top 25 of multiple offensive categories within all of NCAA Division I.

Those categories include: • Batting average (.301), 20th in the NCAA • Doubles (89), 11th in the NCAA • Doubles per game (2.47) 3rd in the NCAA • Hit by Pitch (76), 5th in the NCAA • Sacrifice Flies (30), 2nd in the NCAA • Scoring (7.5 runs per game), 21st in the NCAA

BEST IN THE WEST (COAST CONFERENCE) • From the beginning of the 2019 season until now, no team in the West Coast Conference has had a better record than San Diego baseball. Combining their 2019 record (32-21), their abbreviated 2020 totals (12-4), and their 28-8 mark so far this year, the Toreros are a conference-best 72-33 (.685) in that 105-game span.

• Next best within that timeframe are Gonzaga (64-47, .576), and Saint Mary’s (63-50, .557).

• BYU (60-49, .550) ranks fourth. TOREROS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN WCC • USD finished third in the 2021 West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll behind Pepperdine and Gonzaga. The Toreros were one of four programs to receive a first-place vote. THREE MAKE ALL-WCC PRESEASON TEAM • Freshman right-handed pitcher Carter Rustad, sophomore utility player Caleb Ricketts, and junior catcher/first baseman Shane McGuire were all selected to the All-WCC Preseason Team earlier this month. This is the third consecutive season that McGuire has received preseason recognition, while it marks the first time that Rustad and Ricketts were selected to the team.

THE ROSTER • The Toreros return seven position starters from 2019 including Tora Otsuka (OF), Paul Kunst (OF), Thomas Luevano (INF), Caleb Ricketts (UTL), Shane McGuire (C/1B) and Cody Jefferis (MIF).

• San Diego starting pitchers Jake Miller, Grady Miller, and Carter Rustad are all set to return for the 2021 season. Righty reliever Conner Thurman is also back.

• USD’s roster includes 10 upperclassmen, including four transfers: LHP Ryan Robinson (Ohlone College), INF RJ Teijeiro (UCLA), OF Peter Abinanti (St. John’s), and RHP Kieran Shaw (Harvard). Of the 12 newcomers to USD, eight of those are true freshmen, including OF/LHP Kyle Carr, OF Dustin Allen, and RHP Ivran Romero.

PUTTING ON FOR THEIR CITY • USD’s 2021 roster includes 11 players who hail from local San Diego high schools. Those players are: OF/LHP Kyle Carr (San Marcos), RHP Jack Dolak and C/UTL Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine), 3B Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines), 3B/LHP Ivran Romero (Poway), 3B Adam Lopez and LHP Jack Hyde (Grossmont), OF Tora Otsuka (Rancho Bernardo), LHP Brycen Mautz (Westview), (OF) Mike Yourg (Francis Parker), and LHP Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy).

SCHOLAR BALLERS •San Diego’s 2021 roster also features four graduate students — Thomas Luevano, Paul Kunst, Peter Abinanti, and Kieran Shaw. One more player — redshirt junior RJ Teijeiro — has also already earned his undergraduate degree.

SIGNED, SEALED, AND DELIVERED • Junior catcher Adam Kerner signed as an undrafted free agent with the last June following the pandemic-abbreviated 2020 MLB Draft. Kerner was a two-time All-WCC selection in his three years at USD, recording a .305 average with 10 home runs and 67 RBIs. The Toreros have had at least one player sign a professional contract every year since 1990.

COACH HILL’S TWENTY-THIRD SEASON • Rich Hill has built the USD Toreros into one of the most successful Division I baseball programs on the West Coast. The 2021 season is Hill’s 34th year as a head coach at the collegiate level, and 23rd at San Diego, having enjoyed 28 winning seasons in 33 years. He is one of just 10 active NCAA D-I head coaches in 2021 with over 1,000 wins, is the youngest coach within that group, and is the winningest coach in the WCC — both current and all-time.

• Since taking over at USD in 1999, Hill has been remarkable in re-writing the school record book en route to claiming back-to-back West Coast Conference Championship titles in 2002 and 2003, also claiming the crown in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2015.

• Under his leadership, USD produced three consecutive first round picks in Kris Bryant, Connor Joe and Kyle Holder (2013-15).

• With Hill at the helm, San Diego has been tabbed the WCC preseason favorite for nine of the past 13 years.

THE SCHEDULE 2021 Schedule Notes: • 45 games • 27 games at Fowler Park • 17 away games • One doubleheader • 33 total games in San Diego • USD will have stretches of 14 and 12 straight games played in San Diego, the first of which includes trips to San Diego State and UC San Diego • 43 of 46 games are scheduled to take place in California, with only one road trip (Gonzaga) taking the Toreros out of the state • WCC home series include: Pacific, Pepperdine, San Francisco, BYU, and Portland • WCC away series include: Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, LMU, and Gonzaga MEET THE TOREROS
