NOTRE DAME BASEBALL NCAA GAMEDAY NOTES - vs. Cal State Fullerton (May 31, 2003) Notre Dame heads into today’s NCAA winner’s bracket game vs. host Cal State Fullerton (the No. 7 national seed) looking for another strong outing from second team All-American (Collegiate Baseball) and 2003 BIG EAST Conference pitcher of the year Chris Niesel, (first outing in 15 days, did not pitch at BIG EAST Tournament due to a form of tendonitis in his throwing hand) … CSF is expected to counter with freshman LHP Ryan Schreppel (1.90 ERA, 5-2, 42.2 IP, 34 Ks, 13 BB, .203 opp. batting) … Niesel joins Nick Palihnich (’60) and Aaron Heilman (’98-’01) as the only ND pitchers ever to earn All-America (eight ND position players have done so) … Niesel’s BIG EAST dominance included a 7-0 record and 2.58 ERA in eight league starts, plus .247 opponent batting and an 8-to-1 K-to-walk ratio (49/6) in BIG EAST games … he joined WVU’s Zac Cline (9-2) as the only pitchers to post seven league wins while BC's Kevin Shephard and Chris Lambert (both 2.36) were the only full-time starters with better ERA’s in conference play ... Niesel nearly averaged one strikeout per inning in BIG EAST play (49 in 52.1) while averaging just 1.03 walks per 9 IP in conference games (his 49 Ks were 4th-best in the league) … in overall games, Niesel ranked 4th among BIG EAST pitchers with a 2.69 ERA (Shephard was the only starter better, at 2.44) while ranking 2nd in wins (9-1), 3rd in Ks (82), 6th in low opponent batting (.233) and 2nd in innings (90.1) … ND has produced four of the last six BIG EAST pitchers of the year (Brad Lidge in ’98, Aaron Heilman in ’00, ’01) … Niesel and senior RHP Ryan Kalita (13-1, after win over Arizona) have combined for a 27-2 career record at ND … ND is hitting .368 in five postseason games. -

As a part of the Centennial Celebration, The Valley is naming all-centennial teams for each of the Valley’s sponsored sports, including baseball The list of the top players and all-time greatest coach was determined through online fan voting (www.mvc100.org), with input from a centennial committee. More than 500 votes were cast for baseball while all nine of the current league institutions have at least two representatives on the team. Fans voted for players from 1975-present, while a centennial committee recognized players who were in the league prior to 1975 (see page three of release for The Early Years). Joe Carter of Wichita State was the top vote-getter . The league’s Player of the Year award is named after the former Shocker. Gene Stephen- son of Wichita State was voted the all-time greatest coach in MVC Baseball history, which includes an historic run to an NCAA National Champion- ship in 1989. Included in the list are former and current Major League Baseball greats, members of institutional as well as the Valley Hall of Fame and na- tional collegeiate players of the year in baseball. In the league’s fi rst 99 seasons, inclusive of all MVC-sponsored sports, 32 members combined for 27 national championships, while 55 Valley student-athletes captured NCAA individual titles. -

Reflections on William “Bill” Johnson by Bob Chipman January 2017 Bill, It's hard to know where to start, and even harder to compose the right words on a smartphone, but I have to tell you that the general session was absolutely perfect in every way. Undoubtedly the best session I can remember seeing. You guys were all fantastic. I wanted to wait for things to calm down before sending a note, and now there's a chance to write a few words. Certainly, they won't come close to being adequate. After having breakfast together and then seeing you and Charlotte at the LSU party, together with James Turner and Joe Porter, I was already in great spirits about the profession and its connections. So then, the next morning, seeing what unfolded on the stage was even more fun, knowing a little of the background. It was an engaging, well-organized, elegant, and powerfully moving event. I may be going out on a limb here, but think it may become one of the most memorable and important sessions in the history of the ASLA. -
Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31). -

The compilation of the All-America roster was supervised by a panel of analysts working in large part with the historical records contained in the files of the Dr. Baker Football Information Service. The roster consists of only those players who were first-team selections on one or more of the All-America teams that were selected for the national audience and received nationwide circulation. Not included are the thousands of players who received mention on All-America second or third teams, nor the numerous others who were selected by newspapers or agencies with circulations that were not primarily national and with viewpoints, therefore, that were not normally nationwide in scope.
