C. Bourne of Oxford, with the object of studying especially the fresh- water life of Tasmania, and besides the material help which he gave me I am happy to express my indebtedness to the Warden and Fellows of New College for allowing me leave of absence, and to the British Association for a substantial grant. I should also like to acknowledge the assistance which Mrs. Weldon has given me, and if anything in these pages could be thought worthy of being dedicated to the memory of Professor Weldon, to whom I owe so much, my constant aim would be in some measure achieved. It is a delightful experience for the Englishman after travelling for about twelve thousand miles away from home to meet with his fellow country- men at the Antipodes, and to be received with that hospitality which has become almost pro- verbial with us here ; but a special delight is added to the naturalist from home, who can converse with kindred minds in these distant countries, and learn to appreciate the ideas which a2 4 A NATURALIST IN TASMANIA are stimulating the work of fellow naturalists in a land of inexhaustible interest and natural riches. I should be at a loss to say how much in these pages is due to my own observations, and how much to the suggestions which I have gleaned from the conversations and writings of such Australian naturalists as Professor Baldwin Spen- ser of Melbourne, Professor Haswell of Sydney, Mr. Hedley and Mr. Goddard of Sydney, Mr. Twelvetrees of Launceston, and Mr. Rodway of Hobart ; but I am quite certain that I have learnt more from them than I could ever have the wit to put into a book. To Mr. Rodway is due the merit of whatever is sound in my account of the botanical features of Tasmania, and my walks and expeditions with him will always live in my memory as the most pleasant and valuable part of my Australian experiences. Of the many books on Tasmania which I have consulted, I am perhaps most indebted to Mr. Ling Roth’s Aborigines of Tasmania, to Mr. Backhouse Walker’s historical essays entitled Early Tasmania, and published by the Royal Society of Tasmania, to Mr. Rodway’ s Tasmanian Flora, to numerous papers by Mr. Charles Hedley, dealing with the problem of the lost Antarctica, and to Mr. R. M. Johnston’s Geology of Tasmania, In Launceston I received much help from Mr. Scott, Mr. Petterd, and Mr. Alan Slater ; and I must not forget to thank Mr. Wertheimer, the Secretary of the PREFACE 5 Tourist’s Bureau, for his kindness in facilitating my travels, while I can only apologize to my Tasmanian friends that in return for their hospi- tality I have only these imperfect sketches to offer. At the extreme south of Australia and separated at a distance of about two hundred miles from the mainland by the gradually shelving channel of Bass’s Straits, lies the little island of Tasmania, mountainous, forest-clad, and watered by innu- merable rivers and highland lakes, and about intermediate in size between Wales and Ireland. Although it is structurally and historically a part of Australia, the scenery and climate are both quite distinctive, and if a somewhat sombre monotony, not without its special charm, is the keynote of Australia, Tasmania, small as it is, is a land of variety and bold transition, from flat Eucalyptus-covered tablelands to fantastically rugged mountain ranges, overgrown with virgin forests of southern Pine and evergreen Beech from the calm blue skies of a southern Italian summer to the fierce Antarctic blizzard.   • Geology, Geomorphology and Soils of Wellington Park
    Geology, geomorphology and soils of Wellington Park The geology of Wellington Park forms the physical foundations for the landscape and the soil. Millions of years of erosive processes and change have shaped the area to form the landforms we know today. The foothills feature sedimentary sandstones and mudstones laid down during the Permian Period (230-280 million years ago). These are now visible in the foothills of the Mountain around Fern Tree, South Hobart and Lenah Valley. Creamy white to grey in colour these mudstones and sandstones are visible in horizontal or gently dipping layers, sometimes up to a metre thick. In some places brachiopods and bryozoans may be seen. Sandstones rich in quartz formed during the Triassic (180 -230 million years ago) and covered the mudstones. Today these can be seen above approximately 600m in the cliffs and promontories around the Springs (including Rocky Whelans Cave), Sphinx Rock, Crocodile Rock and Snake Plains. On the western slopes of the Glen Dhu Rivulet val ley the Yellow Cliffs are 50m high and extend for 1km, making it the highest and longest sandstone cliffs in the State. A thick sheet of dolerite intruded during the Jurassic Period 170 million years ago. Shrinkage cracks developed while the molten magma cooled, forming large vertical columns with polygonal cross- sections. Block faulting is in part responsible for the main landform trends of eastern and central Tasmania. Mount Wellington and the Derwent Valley were formed some 150 million years ago by block faulting. This has influenced the erosional development of the size and form of the Wellington Range.

This assessment focuses on the social values of Wellington Park, in particular those which relate to landscape. The assessment is based on a ‘Community Values Survey’, undertaken in late 2010-early 2011 by means of a short questionnaire that the greater Hobart community generally was encouraged to complete. The geographic scope of the study was the whole of Wellington Park. The aim of this study is to understand to what extent, and in which ways, the community, in particular the Greater Hobart community, value Wellington Park. A core part of the assessment was to assess how the Wellington Park landscape is appreciated in order to contribute to an understanding of the full range of landscape values that are being assessed in the broader Wellington Park Landscape Assessment. Wellington Park has acknowledged important landscape values which have applied since the early days of European settlement of Hobart, yet these have not been previously assessed formally or in detail. The main aim of the overall Wellington Park Landscape Assessment therefore is to provide important landscape values information to assist in managing the Park to meet the objectives of the Wellington Park Management Plan.

The proposed action is to farm Atlantic Salmon at a new farming zone in Storm Bay, Tasmania. This zone represents an offshore extension to Tassal's existing marine farming leases (MF 190, MF 193, MF 194 and MF 055) within the Tasman Peninsula and Norfolk Bay Marine Farming Development Plan areas. The proposed new farming zone would be approximately 863 Ha containing four leases of approximately 90 Ha each. Within each 90 Ha lease, surface located marine farming equipment will be up to 45 Ha. Any equipment outside this 45 Ha would be at least 5 metres below the surface at the lease boundary. These dimensions will allow for the establishment of a grid mooring system with the capacity to house 16 pen bays on each of the four leases (a total of 64 pen bays). The proposed action in Storm Bay requires the construction and placement of new marine farming infrastructure in waters to the west of Wedge Island. This infrastructure would include: • Mooring and grid system – comprising of 1 x 16 pen bay mooring grid (within each of four proposed leases). Independent mooring configuration will be used to secure feed barges.
