Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 32. Last time, Yuan Shao had mobilized his forces to attack Cao Cao, who responded by leading an army to meet Yuan Shao’s vanguard at the city of Baima (2,3). However, Cao Cao’s operation ran into a roadblock by the name of Yan Liang, Yuan Shao’s top general who easily slayed two of Cao Cao’s lesser officers. Feeling the need for a little more firepower, Cao Cao sent a messenger to the capital to summon Guan Yu. When Guan Yu received the order, he went to inform his two sisters-in-law, who reminded him to try to find some news about Liu Bei on this trip. Guan Yu then took his leave, grabbed his green dragon saber, hopped on his Red Hare horse, and led a few riders to Baima to see Cao Cao. “Yan Liang killed two of my officers and his valor is hard to match,” Cao Cao said. “That’s why I have invited you here to discuss how to deal with him.” “Allow me to observe him first,” Guan Yu said. Cao Cao had just laid out some wine to welcome Guan Yu when word came that Yan Liang was challenging for combat. So Guan Yu and Cao Cao went to the top of the hill to observe their enemy. Cao Cao and Guan Yu both sat down, while all the other officers stood. In front of them, at the bottom of the hill, Yan Liang’s army lined up in an impressive and disciplined formation, with fresh and brilliant banners and countless spears.

Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 26. Last time, the perfect crime was starting to come unraveled. Acting on a tip from his brother, the police inspector He (2) Tao (1) arrested Bai Sheng, the Daylight Rat, for his part in the hijacking of the birthday gifts for the premier. After sufficient torture, Bai Sheng fessed up and confirmed that Chao Gai, the ward chief at East Bank Village in Yuncheng (4,2) County, was the ringleader of the plot. So He Tao was dispatched with 20 men to go to Yuncheng County, where they were to get the cooperation of the local magistrate and arrest Chao Gai and his co-conspirators. When He Tao got to Yuncheng County, court was in recess. So he talked to a clerk of the court, a man named Song Jiang. Now, this Song Jiang was apparently a man of some renown, because He Tao showed him great deference and confided to him the reason for the visit, asking him to help. Song Jiang said sure, no problem; I’ll take you to see the magistrate as soon as he comes back in the afternoon. In the meantime, pardon me while I go take care of a few things at home. So Song Jiang left He Tao at the teahouse across the street from the courthouse and hopped on his horse. But as soon as he left the town, Song Jiang galloped off toward the east. Soooo, what gives? Who the heck is this Song Jiang? And where is he going? As it turns out, this lowly clerk of the court in a podunk little county is going to be THE central character of our novel.

  • The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 73
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 73. Before we pick up where we left off, I should note that the show just celebrated its second anniversary a couple days ago. The introduction episode was published on April 9, 2014, and the first actual episode went up exactly two years ago today. Thank you to everyone who has listened to the podcast, rated it in iTunes, recommended it to a friend, and made a donation to support it. You guys have made this a great ride, and I’m looking forward to the next two years. So last time, after numerous unsuccessful attempts, Cao Cao finally managed to build a fortified camp on the Wei (4) River against Ma Chao, thanks to some freezing weather that allowed him to build a dirtandice wall. This done, he went out to taunt his enemy about it. Ma Chao did not take kindly to this and was just about to charge at Cao Cao when he noticed an imposing figure behind Cao Cao. Ma Chao suspected that this might be Xu Chu, the socalled Mad Tiger he had heard about. So he pointed with his whip and asked, “I have heard that your army has a Tiger Lord. Where is he?” “I AM Xu Chu!” the man behind Cao Cao shouted. Supernatural light seemed to shoot from his eyes, and his air was so imposing that Ma Chao dared not make a move against Cao Cao. Instead, he simply turned his horse around and returned to camp.

They also manage their armies- comprising of troops infantrymen who fight on foot, cavalrymen who fight on horseback, charioteers who fight using horse-drawn chariots, artillerymen who use long-ranged artillery, and sailors and marines who fight using wooden ships- through actions such as recruitment, collection of food and supplies, and training exercises to ensure that their soldiers are well-trained, well-fed, well-armed, and well-supplied.

  • Outlaws-022 Lure
Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 22. Last time, Chao Gai and Liu Tang were planning to hijack the convoy of birthday presents meant for the premier. They brought this idea to the brains of the operation, a local scholar named Wu Yong. Wu Yong suggested that they needed seven or eight bodies to pull this off, but not just any bodies. To that end, he went to recruit three fisherman brothers in Stone Tablet Village: Ruan Xiao’er, Ruan Xiaowu, and Ruan Xiaoqi. As we rejoin the narrative, Wu Yong was spending the night with the three Ruan brothers, and they were drinking and feasting over dinner at the home of one of the brothers. After a few cups, Wu Yong once again broached the pretext of his visit -- that he was there to secure a bunch of big fat juicy fish for a wealthy patron. But the Ruan brothers told him that such big fish were no longer available in these waters. “But you have such a large fishing ground here,” Wu Yong asked, “How come you can’t find big fish?” “To tell you the truth, professor,” said Ruan Xiao’er, the eldest brother, “such big fish can only be found in the waters around Liangshan. The lake around this village is too small for fish that big.” “Well, the marsh around Liangshan is not far from here, and the two bodies of water are connected,” Wu Yong said. “So why don’t you go there to get some fish?” “[Sigh] Don’t even ask,” Ruan Xiao’er sighed.

  • The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 39
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 39. Last time, Cao Cao had just put another smackdown on Yuan Shao when he was distracted from his work by news that Liu Bei was trying to make a sneak attack on his capital Xuchang. So Cao Cao quickly turned around and met Liu Bei en route. Liu Bei won their first clash, but then was met with silence from Cao Cao’s camp the next two days, which made him very suspicious. Liu Bei did not have to wait long for his fears to be justified. Word soon came that his officer Gong (1) Dou (1) had been ambushed while delivering provisions and was presently surrounded by Cao Cao’s troops. So Liu Bei quickly dispatched Zhang Fei to bail him out. Just then came word that a force led by Cao Cao’s general Xiahou Dun had sneaked around Liu Bei and was on its way to attack Runan (3,2), Liu Bei’s home base. “If that is the case, I am under siege from front and back, and I have no way home!” a concerned Liu Bei said. So he sent Guan Yu off to protect Runan. But within a day, word came that Runan had fallen to Xiahou Dun and that Liu Pi (4), the guy Liu Bei had left in charge, had fled the city and that Guan Yu was now trapped by Xiahou Dun’s forces. Just as Liu Bei was panicking, more bad news arrived: Apparently Zhang Fei, who had gone off to save Gong (1) Dou (1), was now also trapped.
