From Coal Pit to Leather Pit: Life Stories of Robert Semple A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of a PhD in History at Massey University Carina Hickey 2010 ii Abstract In the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography Len Richardson described Robert Semple as one of the most colourful leaders of the New Zealand labour movement in the first half of the twentieth century. Semple was a national figure in his time and, although historians had outlined some aspects of his public career, there has been no full-length biography written on him. In New Zealand history his characterisation is dominated by two public personas. Firstly, he is remembered as the radical organiser for the New Zealand Federation of Labour (colloquially known as the Red Feds), during 1910-1913. Semple’s second image is as the flamboyant Minister of Public Works in the first New Zealand Labour government from 1935-49. This thesis is not organised in a chronological structure as may be expected of a biography but is centred on a series of themes which have appeared most prominently and which reflect the patterns most prevalent in Semple’s life. The themes were based on activities which were of perceived value to Semple. Thus, the thematic selection was a complex interaction between an author’s role shaping and forming Semple’s life and perceived real patterns visible in the sources.

Six years on, only half of these projects have been built or had funds committed to build them. The other industry half remain incomplete and the intervening period of strong population and economic growth has created further pressing demands on our transport system. Melbourne’s liveability is recognised worldwide and RACV wants it to stay this way. For this reason, we have again consulted with state and local governments and listened to Members to identify an updated program of works to meet the needs of people living in and travelling through Melbourne’s outer suburbs. RACV presents Outer Melbourne Connect as a responsible blueprint comprising road improvements, rail line extensions and significant public transport service improvements.Connect provides a comprehensive and connected transport network to address the critical backlog of projects in outer Melbourne.

Death of Johnny and his burial on the foreshore at McCrae Johnny’s death and burial occurred in a later and different era, the gold rush period, 11 years after the Protectorate moved from the Mornington Peninsula. I came upon the location of his grave when seeking information from George Gordon McCrae’s journal about George Smith. Then George Smith turned out to be the earliest legal licence holder of the foreshore where Johnny was buried. I was struck with the intimacy, the connectedness of these people, black and white, in those far-off days: here are the same people, Bogy Bogy/Pereuk and George Smith, first met with in the Protectorate era. And when I went down to the lighthouse precinct to estimate what George Gordon McCrae might have meant by ‘a little to the south of the present lighthouse’, it seemed obvious that Johnny was buried either beneath a public car park or possibly beneath Point Nepean Road. We must walk unknowingly over Aboriginal graves on the Mornington Peninsula, but it is quite a different matter to park vehicles and trailers on a grave once we know it is there. This chapter brings together all the information gathered about Johnny’s death and the location of his grave site. Aboriginal Affairs Victoria will act on the matter. The most well-known account of Johnnie’s death comes to us from the journal of Georgiana McCrae: it survived almost by accident, being included in a portion of Georgiana’s diary ‘Scrip scrap’ which had become separated from the rest of her journals and was found damaged and disordered in her desk:1 it is a brief and moving account.
