This replica was built by the Rye Lions and Rotary Clubs in 1988 to commemorate one of the earliest and important industries on the peninsula. In the mid 1800s limestone was burnt in kilns to produce lime for making mortar. Most of the lime was shipped to Melbourne for use in the building industry.
