    EARLYSCOTTISH HOSPITALS AND REGULATIONS FOR ~SOLAT~ON IT has already been mentioned that the early hospitals were connected with religious foundations, and that those who carried out the treatment of the sicli in them were at first clerics. It should be remembered that the nature of a mediaval hospital and the diseases treated there were different from those found in hospitals as they exist at the present day. In the first place, hospitals were not generally intended for the treatment of acute disease. For one thing, means of transport was difficult, and a patient suffering from such a disease as acute pneumonia could not be transported to hospital on horseback unless it happened that lie took ill at thc very gate of a monastery. In tlir: second place, thc early stages of chronic disease were not recognised. Thus, thcre was no means of diagnosing valvular disease of the heart, as such, before the end of the 18th century, and persons suffering from this condition would not be regarded as subjects for treatment until their condition was so advanced that the case might be classed as one of " dropsy." Similarly, diseases of the kidneys could hardly be recognised with exactness before Bright's treatisc of 1827. If it be true that syphilis did not occur, in a severe form at least, before 1494, many diseases such as locomotor ataxia, general paralysis and several other nervous conditions, must have been non-existent in the Middle Ages. Speaking generally, therefore, only persons who had been so disabled as to bc quite unfit for work and active life formed tlie class from which hospital patients were drawn in mediaeval times.

By DAVID MILNE, Esq., F.R.S.E. ••\ [Read 5th December 1842 and 9th January 1843.] IT seems extraordinary, that no one should have undertaken a geological sur- vey of Roxburghshire, more especially as the counties to the east and west of it have been examined, and accounts of their formations were published some years ago. It cannot be from its uninteresting character, that the intervening dis- trict has been neglected; for it presents as great a variety of apparently distinct formations, as there are in the adjoining counties of Dumfries and Berwick; and some of these have long been the special subjects of speculation and controversy among geologists. The British Association, in the Report of its Meeting held at Cambridge in 1833, propounded the following questions for geological inquiry. " 1. Is the red sandstone of Kelso contemporaneous with that of Salisbury Crags; and what relation do they respectively bear to the adjacent coal-fields ? " 2. What is the exact northern boundary of the coal-field of the River Liddell f " 3. What are the relations as to age of the two series of whin-rocks, one running north-east along the Liddell in Roxburghshire, the other south-east in the neighbourhood of Melrose and Jedburgh f These questions show the opinion entertained by the Geological Section of the Association, as to the interesting geological character of Roxburghshire. But the questions which they propounded have never received an answer; a result not surprising in regard to the last of these questions, as it calls for an explanation of facts which really have no existence.

MacGregor The information given in this paper has not extended to genealogy proper, which is found elsewhere, but there is reason to believe that most if not all of those who bear the name have inherited it from a common ancestral family. It does not at present seem possible to extend even the longest genealogical records back on a son-to-father basis more than three to four centuries at most, but records of the name in recognizable form, as well as the places where it is found, show that it has been borne first in the south-east and then in the south-west of Scotland for at least eight centuries. The records also display the movement first to Ireland after 1600, then to the American Colonies after 1700, then to Canada about 1800 and finally across both countries to the Pacific. For more than two centuries the information is extensive and reliable. Despite the exodus from the British Isles and the scattering across North America it is pleasant to know that a good measure of communication has been either preserved or revived over the whole area among descendants who share an interest in common origins and a stirring past. " • ••:-&.: 35 •*i- > . % V 2 ® O ' S3 — KELSO ABBEY. 217 Sir Walter Scott states that he had often seen the foundations of the piers, when drifting down the Tweed to take salmon by torch-light. The village of Newstead is a mile east from Melrose on the road to Lauder. After the extinction of Old Melrose an ecclesiastical structure was here reared, and was known as Red Abbey Stead, from the colour of the sandstone. The pleasant suburb of Gattonside, embosomed amid orchards and gardens, is about a mile from Melrose. A church is supposed to have been at Gattonside, and some remains of vaults are visible. Drygrange was a granary of the Monks, and another was near the hamlet of Eildon, on the opposite side of the Tweed. A mile above Drygrange is the Hill of the Cowdenknowes, the " bonnie broom" of which is celebrated in Scottish song. On the side of the middle Eildon Hill is an artificial tumulus called the " Bourjo," of some extent, and traditionally alleged to be the memorial of Druidical rites. 1 The road to this locality is called the Haxalgate, and on the north-eastern summit are the vestiges of an alleged Roman Camp, with two fosses and mounds of earth nearly two miles in circumference, and a level space in the centre. Its identity as a Roman camp is disputed, and the enclosure may have been simply a Border fastness to which the cattle of the neighbourhood were driven on the approach of an enemy.
