Uncover the forgotten connections between the Caribbean and 18th-century America on a delightful winter voyage aboard the historic sailing ship Sea Cloud. We are pleased that Reeve Huston, Associate Professor of History at Duke, will be traveling with us. Professor Huston’s teaching, thinking, and writing center on U.S. political history and on the history of capitalism, and he is currently working on a book titled, Reforging American Democracy: Political Practices in the United States, 1812-1840. Embark Sea Cloud in Barbados for a seven-night voyage. Cruise to Nevis to visit the house where Alexander Hamilton was born, and stroll through the island’s spectacular botanic garden. On St. Kitts, where Hamilton’s mother lived for several years, see the UNESCO-listed site of a decisive battle in the American Revolution. The history of merchant seafarer training is probably almost as old as deep sea seafaring itself. It can certainly be identified from medieval times, at least in Britain through the adoption of craft guild progression structures: apprenticeship, journeyman craftsman (mate), master craftsman. In British seafaring two levels of apprenticeship evolved: seaman apprenticeship and officer apprenticeship. With the opening of the oceans in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, educational dimensions, especially navigation, began to be taught ashore as well as at sea, to those destined for command. Until well into the nineteenth century, skills aspects, grouped under the term seamanship, were always learned or taught through example and experience aboard ships engaged in commercial trading. -

(617) 846-CPYC Web site: www.CPYC.ORG Interclub Dinghy Nationals The weekend of April 8th and 9th brought 27 Interclub Dinghies to CPYC to race their National Championship in the waters sailed by the Winthrop Frostbite Sailing Club most winter Sundays. Boats came from Annapolis to Maine. Organizers Bill Rothwell, Steve Braver- man, Linda Epstein, and Dave Nelson did a terrific job putting a fun weekend together. Unfortunately the weather on Sat did not cooperate forcing the cancellation of all racing due to winds gusting into the 30’s. Many thanks to CPYC for opening the bowling alleys, pool ta- bles and darts to keep the sailors occupied during the postponements. Sunday brought a beautiful day with lighter winds allowing the race committee to get in 10 races. Thanks go to the many CPYCers who worked the race committee, and lent their boats to the regatta. Racing was extremely close with less than a second between boats at the finish on numerous occasions. The regatta was won by Ted Ferra- rone and Meredith Killon, 2nd Stephen Benjamin and Brooks Davey, 3rd Paul-Jon Patin and Felicity Ryan, 4th Art and Jennifer Rousma- niere, 5th Jim Bowers and Lydia Brown. National Park Service Dry Tortugas U.S. Department of the Interior RKnONAi Dry Tortugas National Park Windjammer Wreck . - 7 -••ViiiAfflfr ' In the dark, early morning hours of January 21,1907, heavy winter wind and waves buffeted the Avanti. A navigational error while attempting to pass around the Dry Tortugas contributed to the crew's misfortune. At 6:44 a.m., thirty-two years to the day after it was launched, the Avanti struck the Loggerhead Reef. Its iron hull, nearly as long as a football field, scraped along the jagged coral reef with a sickening sound. Howling winds mufifled the cries of the 19-man crew as they frantically tried to save their dying vessel. Losing the port anchor in an attempt to slow the ship's movement,the crew became desperate. Unsure of the holding power of the windlass, the anchor cable was brought out of the forecastle and wrapped around the starboard bits. Taking on water and inching deeper into the rumbling seas, the remaining anchor was -dropped-to prevent-the-vcssel from-slipping off into deeper water and sinking.-Heavily damaged and stranded, the ship eventually broke apart. Though the crew was saved and much of the cargo later salvaged, the Avanti was a complete loss. Today the wreck offers divers and snorkelers a haunting glimpse of a once-proud sailing ship. The Avanti is also the most complete wreck site in the park, and provides a breathtaking backdrop for a wide variety of colorful reef fish, coral, and marine life.
