Uncover the forgotten connections between the Caribbean and 18th-century America on a delightful winter voyage aboard the historic sailing ship Sea Cloud. Explore lush gardens and charming colonial towns, and swim or snorkel from exquisite white-sand beaches. We are pleased that Reeve Huston, Associate Professor of History at Duke, will be traveling with us. Embark Sea Cloud in Barbados for a seven-night voyage. Cruise to Nevis to visit the house where Alexander Hamilton was born, and stroll through the island’s spectacular botanic garden. (617) 846-CPYC Web site: www.CPYC.ORG Interclub Dinghy Nationals The weekend of April 8th and 9th brought 27 Interclub Dinghies to CPYC to race their National Championship in the waters sailed by the Winthrop Frostbite Sailing Club most winter Sundays. Boats came from Annapolis to Maine. Organizers Bill Rothwell, Steve Braver- man, Linda Epstein, and Dave Nelson did a terrific job putting a fun weekend together. Unfortunately the weather on Sat did not cooperate forcing the cancellation of all racing due to winds gusting into the 30’s. Many thanks to CPYC for opening the bowling alleys, pool ta- bles and darts to keep the sailors occupied during the postponements. Sunday brought a beautiful day with lighter winds allowing the race committee to get in 10 races. Thanks go to the many CPYCers who worked the race committee, and lent their boats to the regatta. Racing was extremely close with less than a second between boats at the finish on numerous occasions. The regatta was won by Ted Ferra- rone and Meredith Killon, 2nd Stephen Benjamin and Brooks Davey, 3rd Paul-Jon Patin and Felicity Ryan, 4th Art and Jennifer Rousma- niere, 5th Jim Bowers and Lydia Brown. • Sea Cloud Board a Legend, Sail Into History 2018 Voyages
SEA CLOUD BOARD A LEGEND, SAIL INTO HISTORY 2018 VOYAGES TM DEAR TRAVELER, We have been leading expeditions together aboard Sea Cloud for five years now (Tom began working aboard in the 1980s) and we can genuinely attest that this ship is a destination in and of itself. The fact that she travels to both iconic and discoverable locations is just the frosting on her impeccable ‘cake.’ People have been in love with Sea Cloud since she was commissioned by E.F. Hutton and his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, in 1931. She is the most authentic, historic, and elegant hand-sailed tall ship in the world. Watching the crew of 18 raise and lower her 30 sails by hand, the old-fashioned way, is a thrilling sight, one that elicits a powerful feeling. And as one of our past guests summed it up, “the Sea Cloud made me proud to be one of her passengers every time we came into port!” When you add our carefully crafted itineraries—Caribbean, Sicily-Malta, the Greek Isles, and Greece and the Dalmatian Coast—plus our unique Lindblad-National Geographic expedition style to Sea Cloud’s allures, you have the makings of an incomparable travel experience. Our expedition approach balances the ship’s native elegance with casual comfort. It creatively choreographs a square-rig sailing experience with the intimate history of the ship. And it mixes the surprise and delight of “off the beaten path” islands and authentic local encounters with visits to must-see sites. Consider too that when we’re in the Mediterranean, we make it a priority to schedule our visits for times when we have legendary sites virtually to ourselves.

  • Windjammer the Voyage of the Christian Radich
Rev 2.00 – 21/10/2012 Windjammer The Voyage of the Christian Radich Transcribed from the English soundtrack. PROLOGUE In Norway, winter comes early and stays late. We Norwegians are used to long winters, and many of us young people enjoy winter as much as summer. This particular winter might have been like any other. But in the middle of November, Oslo’s full- rigged school ship Christian Radich was moved to a berth at the city dock. Then, newspapers and the radio started telling that the Christian Radich was going to leave soon on a special training cruise to the east coast of the United States, by way of Madeira and the West Indies. Of course, the Captain will be Yngvar Kjelstrup, one of Norway’s best-known sailing masters and the man who was responsible for designing and building the Christian Radich. He believes every Norwegian boy worth his keep should make at least one training cruise on a windjammer. Never, it seems, had there been so much excitement about the departure of any Norwegian vessel, nor had there been so much competition among young men and boys to sign on for the cruise. The purpose of a training cruise is to qualify boys for billets in Norway’s very big merchant marine, but many Norwegian boys go to sea because it’s a family tradition. Their fathers, uncles, or grandfathers have been ship captains or mates. Captain Kjelstrup is very careful in choosing his boys. You don’t stand a chance unless you’re tip- top physically and have good letters from your teachers, pastor, doctor, and others who know you.

  • “Mulsae” (Almost) Does the Texas 200 June 2016 Written by Mike Mangus Day 1, “Tackless in Trouble” 15 Minutes After Fina
“Mulsae” (almost) does the Texas 200 June 2016 Written by Mike Mangus Day 1, “Tackless in Trouble” 15 minutes after finally completing a laborious tack in water so shallow that the ultra-shoal Dovekie sometimes scrapes across underwater oyster clumps, I see trouble ahead. The water goes from shallow to downright Puddle Duck skinny 30’ directly ahead and there is no way to tack with the stuck centerboard and raised leeboards. There was only one thing left to do … jump overboard! It is the first day of the 2016 Texas 200, a 200’ish mile long multi-day sailing and camping trip starting from Port Isabel and sailing up the Texas coast to eventually end at Magnolia Beach. In between lies hundreds of miles of the Laguna Madre, bays, ports, bayous, passes, mud, sand and seashell beaches, and of course the Intercostal Waterway with its barges, fishing boats, huge container ships, and ferries. Over 50 boats and 100 sailors launched this hot Monday morning to embark upon 6 days of sailing, rowing, and motoring from camp to camp through oftentimes untouched and uninhabited waterways. A huge variety of boats from small home-built wooden boats to 25’+ production boats, from Hobie AI/TIs trimarans to a 30’ wooden schooner, and everything else in between and then some is in the fleet. There is even two sail-less row boats this year! There was zero Puddle Duck Racers this year though. The diminutive 8’ x 4’ scow sailboats may be able to sail over 3” of water, but sailing one 200+ miles requires a certain amount of insanity and apparently everyone passed the sanity check this year.
