(Mickey) Schubert is a historian who has done extensive research on the topic of Buffalo Soldiers, specifically the experiences of individuals. Schubert has written numerous books and articles on Buffalo Soldiers, such as On the Trail of the Buffalo Soldier Vol 1 and Vol 2, Black Valor, Voices of the Buffalo Soldier, and Buffalo Soldiers, Braves and the Brass. He has also given lectures across the United States, Hungary, and Romania. He served in the United States Army from 1965-1968 and his writing has also extended to a variety of military subjects. Schubert received his B.A. from Howard University (where his interest in African American history began) in 1965, his M.A. from the University of Wyoming (where his research into Buffalo Soldiers began) in 1970, and his Ph.D. from the University of Toledo in 1977 where he studied under William Leckie. He continued his Buffalo Soldier research Missouri Valley Special Collections • http://www.kchistory.org • 14 W. 10th St., Kansas City, MO 64105 • 816.701.3427 THE KANSAS CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY well into the 2000s while also working as a historian in the Department of Defense from 1977 to 2003. Schubert describes “Buffalo Soldiers” as black soldiers who served in the US Army between the American Civil War and World War I. During the Civil War, almost 200,000 African Americans served as volunteers. The army was reorganized in 1866 after the war, and blacks were included as army regulars for the first time in US history. They formed two infantry units and two cavalry units, each overseen by white officers. Though segregated from the rest of the military, these units of men played a role in shaping the United States during its expansion across the frontier. Scope and Content Note This collection contains material created and compiled during Frank Schubert’s decades of research, writing, and speaking on African American history, Buffalo Soldiers, and frontier military history. These materials were foldered, labeled, and boxed by the creator of the collection. In most cases his original order and folder titles have been kept, although due to some loose materials some rearrangement was necessary. Where rearrangement was done, an arrangement based on subject order was used. The series and folder dates recorded reflect the dates of record-keeping activity in which the information being described was created, assembled, and maintained by the collection’s creator. When copies of published journal articles are present, publication dates are also reflected in the date range because it is often impossible to distinguish these dates from the dates of record-keeping activity. Some original content dates are included in the folder titles, but not in the folders’ date ranges. When a folder has no date of record-keeping activity or publication date the folder’s date range is shown as “n.d.” (no date). Series 1: Research Files, 1907-2014 and n.d.
