Ratio Between Continuing Assessment and Examinations To encourage your children to set a target for their studies, we have attached for your reference a list of ratios between continuing assessment and examinations. 2. School-based Assessment in HKDSE To ensure that students daily make a serious effort in their schoolwork, the Examination and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) has incorporated the school-based assessment (SBA) into some HKDSE subjects. Our school will submit the scores to the HKEAA as stipulated by this policy. Our teachers will inform students the content of SBA in due time. The weighting of SBA in each subject is shown in the table below. Strategies to Boost Students’ Results In October, we will launch a number of initiatives with an aim to cater for learners’ diversity, unleash students’ potential and most importantly, help our students in their pursuit of academic excellence. - S1 and S2 English/Chinese/Mathematics after-school enhancement classes - S3 after-school study groups - S5 English after-school enhancement classes - S6 Chinese/English after-school extra lessons; Maths and Liberal Studies enrichment classes; and DSE subjects exam preparation classes. 4. Self-study Room for S5-S6 To create a tranquil environment for revision, a study room (Multi-function Room) will be open for S5-S6 students to do their self-study starting from October 3, Mondays to Thursdays (except school holidays), from 6:00 pm to 8:45 pm. Since seats are limited, we will vet the applicants according to their conduct and academic results, and also consider class teachers’ recommendation. 5. S6 Pre-mock Exam To help our S6 students obtain better results in the DSE, a pre-mock exam is specially arranged for them. Please urge your children to do frequent revision. If students have no exam on that day or in the afternoon session, they are not required to come back to school. The time and date for the pre-mock exam of various subjects will be shown in the November circular. 6. Reading Scheme Please refer to the attachment and sign for confirmation. 7. Good News 6T Florece Cherry Wayne B and Thong Joey Ern Xin have completed the London GCSE Chinese Examination 2015 and got the highest grade of A*. 8. Payment for English School-Based Materials/News Quiz Booklets To cater for learners’ diversity, our English teachers have produced a collection of school-based materials for students. These materials, which are written in accordance with the EDB curriculum guides, aim to enrich students’ learning experiences in writing and reading, and help parents save costs on textbooks. The school will send the materials for printing on behalf of students. The charges for each booklet will be collected via smart card. The charges for the writing booklets for the month of September are listed as follows: S1 – $7.60, S2 – $7.60, S3 – $8.40, S4 – $9.60, S5 – $18.40, S6 – $12.50. The amount will be charged to students’ smart cards. Please make sure that there is enough balance on their cards. 9. S2 Chinese Supplementary Workbooks A supplementary workbook will be used to provide more training for TSA in S.2. The list price of the workbook is $74 each. If in bulk order, the cost is $59 each, which will be deducted from the students’ smartcards. If parents want to purchase the workbook on their own, please send a written request to the Chinese teacher within three working days. 10. S4 Chinese Selected Reading and Comprehension Workbook To strengthen students’ understanding of classic texts, the Chinese panel will use a set of workbooks (2 in a set) by Hong Kong Joint-Us Press at the Form 4 level. The list price is $186 ($88 for the selected reading booklet and $98 for the exercise book). The bulk purchase offer is $140 per set, which will be deducted from students’ smartcards. If parents want to purchase the workbook set on their own, please send a written request to the Chinese teacher within three working days. 11. Hong Kong Schools Music Festival Please encourage your children to participate in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. For more information, please refer to the attached circular. 12. Co-curricular Activities To enrich students’ experiences and further arouse their interest in learning, co-curricular activities have been organized for them on most Fridays of October. Every student must take part in relevant activities. Please note that the programmes start at 3:45pm and finish at 5pm. Details are given in the next item (No. 14). d) October 26 (Wednesday): Teachers’ development day; no class for students. 14. School Picnic October 21 (Friday) is our school picnic day. Students should bring their own food and some cash for personal use. They should wear their P.E. uniform (or approved class tees with long sports pants or dark blue jeans). If necessary, students can wear their black P.E. jackets. The relevant fees will be automatically charged through e-account. Students not joining the school picnic should submit medical proof and have to stay in school for self-study until 4.00 pm. In case of sickness, students should consult a doctor and then submit the medical certificate when applying for sick leave. The gathering time for S1 to S5 is 8:10am. Policy of Enhanced School Complaint Management Arrangments and Sexual Harassment Prevention The school has set up a mechanism to handle complaints in accordance with the EDB guidelines. The aim is to provide quality education to students, develop a good relationship with stakeholders and establish school-based procedures to deal with feedback and complaints promptly and effectively. The aim is to protect all members in the school, including students, teaching staff, parents, volunteers, contract workers and anyone serving the school so that they can work, study and play in a harassment-free and safe environment. Therefore, an elite student who is receiving full remission scholarship does not need to apply for the sponsorship assigned for underprivileged students. Notice on Hong Kong Schools Music Festival

The 69th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival will be held between February 27 and March 29, 2017. It is now open for application. Details are available at the Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association’s website (http://www.hksmsa.org.hk/).

Our school will submit the entry form of students who are interested in joining the competition. Parents will need to pay the application fee and the cost of printing the music scores. Parents are also advised to take their child to the venue on the day of his/her event, except for group competitions. Tai Po Sam Yuk Secondary School Memo for students about Picnic Day (October 21, 2016)

1. The morning assembly will start at 8:10am as usual. 2. Bring your student ID card. For those over 15, bring your HK ID card too. 3. Dress code: Upper body: House T-shirt or class T-shirt (as approved by Mr. Lau, Vice-Principal); black School jacket (if needed)

Lower body: Black/blue long School pants or blue jeans with simple and casual cut. No tight pants.

Shoes: Sports shoes or trekking boots

※ Other requirements for students’ appearance are the same as those for school days. Reference: Handbook P.24

4. Bring adequate water, mosquito repellent, cap and sunscreen products for being outdoors in the sun.

5. Students are NOT allowed to bring any electronic game players or MP3 players.

6. Students are allowed to bring mobile phones. Please take good care of them and switch them off before getting to school in the morning. They are used only for communication when out of school. Students cannot switch them on until they arrive at their destinations.

7. For those who easily feel dizzy in vehicles or boats, bring along vomit bags and medicines.

8. In the preparation of food, please follow the principles of the Bible for good and healthy eating. (reference: Leviticus, Chapter 11)

9. NO one is allowed to bring a lighter except the group leaders who are assigned by the class teachers.

10. Students must not take up any activities individually or do any climbing. If students get lost with their peers, they should inform their class teachers at once.

11. If the air pollution index reaches 101 or higher, class teachers will advise any student with heart or breathing problems not to take part in activities and they should stay in school for self-study and to do revision work.

12. Students should wear or bring along their watches as it is very important for every team member to keep time.

13. If any student in your group is injured or unwell, it is important that you stay calm. Ask another teammate to accompany the patient and then seek help from any teachers who are nearby. If you cannot contact a teacher, call the general office at 2665-3459.

14. If typhoon signal no.1 is hoisted at 6:00 AM on the picnic day, the school picnic will be cancelled. Students should go to school and follow the regular school programme for the day.

School Picnic Day is a good day for learning outside the classroom.

Re: Influenza Vaccination Service

The peak season of influenza falls on the period between November and March each year. To protect our students from the disease, we are offering an influenza vaccination programme in cooperation with United Christian Nethersole Community Health Service on 25 October 2016 (Tuesday). This programme will be held in our school at the Youth Centre. The influenza vaccine will effectively prevent the following components: A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) virus, A/Hong Kong /4801/2014 (H3N2) virus, B/Phuket/3073/2013 and B/ Brisbane/60/2008 virus. The protection will last one year. Each vaccination costs $130, which can be charged to students’ smart cards.

Attached please find the guidelines for flu vaccination for your reference. For enquiries, please call 2665-3459. Participants of the vaccination programme should take note of the following points:

1. This programme is voluntary. One must sign the consent form. 2. The vaccine is to prevent: A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) virus, A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2) virus, B/Phuket/3073/2013 and B/ Brisbane/60/2008 virus. 3. Students with the following syndromes shall not receive the vaccine: - Students who are allergic to egg, neomycin or influenza vaccination - Students with Guillian Barre Syndrome 4. Students should postpone the vaccination when: - feeling unwell or having a fever on the day of vaccination. - taking drugs that contain steroids. In this case, one has to stop the medication first before receiving the vaccination. For enquiry, please contact your doctor. 5. Following the vaccination, swelling or fatigue may occur. However, the side effects will subside in a few days. Other effects are not common. In case a fever, headache, vomit, rash or other discomfort arise, one should consult the doctor immediately.
