    ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND PERFORMANCE LAND AND WATERBORNE TRANSPORT Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. A safe, efficient, reliable and environment friendly transport system is important to the sustainable development of the city. On environmental management, we will continue to press ahead with the following initiatives - priority for efficient and environment friendly transport modes; reduction in traffic congestion and better inter-modal co-ordination; greater emphasis on pedestrian facilities; and application of Information Technology (IT) to transport management. Priority for Efficient and Environment Friendly Transport Modes Railways are environment friendly, safe and efficient mass carriers in Hong Kong, carrying about 40% of our public transport passengers. At present, the total length of our railways under operation is about 219 km. We are taking forward the following five railway projects in full swing - West Island Line; South Island Line (East); Kwun Tong Line Extension; Shatin to Central Link; and Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link. 7 Upon completion of these railway passenger lines by 2020, the total length of railways in operation in Hong Kong will be increased to about 280 km. We launched the consultancy study on the Review and Update of the Railway Development Strategy 2000 in March 2011 to further our policy for better use of railways as the backbone of the passenger transport system. Development of rail transport will significantly speed up passenger flow, alleviate road traffic congestion and reduce vehicle-induced air pollution. The study is expected to be completed in 2013. The Government will continue with its efforts to enhance the co-ordination between railway and other public transport modes to avoid unnecessary duplication of public transport resources and alleviate traffic congestion.

    CB(1)1012/04-05(04) Legislative Council Panel on Transport Subcommittee on matters relating to railways Performance of Ma On Shan Rail after commissioning Purpose This paper informs Members about the performance of Ma On Shan (MOS) Rail after its commissioning on 21 December 2004, and the progress of noise monitoring of MOS Rail. Performance 2. MOS Rail has attracted an average daily patronage of 80 000 to 90 000 passenger trips since opening and achieved a single-day record of 125 000 passenger trips on 24 December 2004. All MOS Rail stations are operating smoothly and MOS Rail passengers are now generally accustomed to the interchange arrangement with East Rail at Tai Wai Station. Both Tai Wai Station and East Rail have enough capacity to handle the additional passengers resulting from the commissioning of MOS Rail. Even during the morning peak hours, most MOS Rail passengers can board the first East Rail train that arrives. 3. MOS Rail operates more than 500 trains a day. The train service delivery and punctuality rates for January 2005 were 99.92% and 99.74% respectively. These rates are above KCRC’s performance requirements as laid down in the service agreement with the Government. Improvement measures 4. Over the past two months, passengers have made a number of suggestions on MOS Rail services. As for Members’ request for follow-up actions on the noise monitoring of MOS Rail, an update on the subject is detailed in paragraphs 14 to 17. 5. To familiarise passengers with the operation of MOS Rail and the interchange arrangement at Tai Wai Station, KCRC has employed 130 temporary service ambassadors and, during the first week of operation, set up information - 1 - counters at the concourse of all MOS Rail stations to provide assistance to passengers.

Purpose 1.1 This paper aims to brief members on the programme to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the opening of MacLehose Trail. 2. Background 2.1 MacLehose Trail, opened on 26 October 1979, was the first long-distance hiking trail in Hong Kong. This 100-kilometre trail is divided into ten sections, traversing the New Territories from East to West through eight country parks namely Sai Kung East, Sai Kung West, Ma On Shan, Lion Rock, Kam Shan, Shing Mun, Tai Mo Shan and Tai Lam. Winding along coastline, rugged mountains, valleys and reservoirs, the trail offers to hikers varied hiking experience and breathtaking scenery of the countryside as well as overlooking view of the cityscape of the Kowloon Peninsula. This famous trail has been named as one of the world’s 20 dream trails by National Geographic. 2.2 This year is the 40th anniversary of this iconic hiking trail. To commemorate this special occasion, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) is going to launch a celebration programme from September to December 2019 to promote the fun of hiking and showcase the stunning natural beauty, interesting heritage and relics and amazing wildlife along different sections of MacLehose Trail.
