  • Prestige Label Discography
Discography of the Prestige Labels Robert S. Weinstock started the New Jazz label in 1949 in New York City. The Prestige label was started shortly afterwards. Originaly the labels were located at 446 West 50th Street, in 1950 the company was moved to 782 Eighth Avenue. Prestige made a couple more moves in New York City but by 1958 it was located at its more familiar address of 203 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Prestige recorded jazz, folk and rhythm and blues. The New Jazz label issued jazz and was used for a few 10 inch album releases in 1954 and then again for as series of 12 inch albums starting in 1958 and continuing until 1964. The artists on New Jazz were interchangeable with those on the Prestige label and after 1964 the New Jazz label name was dropped. Early on, Weinstock used various New York City recording studios including Nola and Beltone, but he soon started using the Rudy van Gelder studio in Hackensack New Jersey almost exclusively. Rudy van Gelder moved his studio to Englewood Cliffs New Jersey in 1959, which was close to the Prestige office in Bergenfield. Producers for the label, in addition to Weinstock, were Chris Albertson, Ozzie Cadena, Esmond Edwards, Ira Gitler, Cal Lampley Bob Porter and Don Schlitten. Rudy van Gelder engineered most of the Prestige recordings of the 1950’s and 60’s. The line-up of jazz artists on Prestige was impressive, including Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Red Garland, Wardell Gray, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, “Brother” Jack McDuff, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Don Patterson, Sonny Rollins, Shirley Scott, Sonny Stitt and Mal Waldron.

For some reason Nebraska is not in the top ten and for no other reason you should by this CD recording for the this must be an oversight. Anyhow, this seemed like the perfect tracks Black Cherry Fritters and Cream De Funk. These two backdrop for discussing my favorite saxophone combination, tunes burn with a freshness that is more meaningful today the duo. than when they were first recorded. I highly recommend this I love jazz saxophone recordings, but something extra special recording for young alto players who need direction in regards seems to happen when you pair two talented musicians and put to sound. them in the moment. Somehow the constraints of the recording process (choosing songs, marketing, packaging concerns, etc.) go 9 by the wayside and the true natural of creativity and perhaps, Conversation With Warne (Criss Cross Jazz) competition come to the fore. Many younger people are not aware of this duo, let alone Born in the backroom jam sessions on the 930s and 40s the Warne Marsh. A TRANSFORMATIONAL APPROACH TO JAZZ HARMONY Michael McClimon Submitted to the faculty of the University Graduate School in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University January 2016 Accepted by the Graduate Faculty, Indiana University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Doctoral Committee Julian Hook, Ph.D. Kyle Adams, Ph.D. Blair Johnston, Ph.D. Brent Wallarab, M.M. December 9, 2015 ii Copyright © 2016 Michael McClimon iii Acknowledgements This project would not have been possible without the help of many others, each of whom deserves my thanks here. Pride of place goes to my advisor, Jay Hook, whose feedback has been invaluable throughout the writing process, and whose writing stands as a model of clarity that I can only hope to emulate. Thanks are owed to the other members of my committee as well, who have each played important roles throughout my education at Indiana: Kyle Adams, Blair Johston, and Brent Wallarab. Thanks also to Marianne Kielian-Gilbert, who would have served on the committee were it not for the timing of the defense during her sabbatical. I would like to extend my appreciation to Frank Samarotto and Phil Ford, both of whom have deeply shaped the way I think about music, but have no official role in the dissertation itself. I am grateful to the music faculty of Furman University, who inspired my love of music theory as an undergraduate and have more recently served as friends and colleagues during the writing process.

  • Chicago Music Communities and the Everyday Significance of Playing Jazz
MUSIC PRACTICES AS SOCIAL RELATIONS: CHICAGO MUSIC COMMUNITIES AND THE EVERYDAY SIGNIFICANCE OF PLAYING JAZZ by John Frederic Behling A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Music: Musicology) in The University of Michigan 2010 Doctoral Committee: Professor Mark Allan Clague, Chair Professor Paul A. Anderson Professor Kelly M. Askew Professor Charles Hiroshi Garrett Copyright John Frederic Behling 2010 Acknowledgements In this dissertation, I argue that the solos of jazz musicians spring from the practices of the communities in which they live. What holds true for expression and creativity in jazz is no less true of academic research and writing. This dissertation would not be possible without the support and encouragement of many communities and individuals. I thank all the musicians in Chicago who played music with me and welcomed me into their communities. I am especially grateful to Aki Antonia Smith, Edwina Smith, Scott Earl Holman, and Ed Breazeale for befriending me and introducing me to the musicians and communities about whom I write. I am also grateful for the support of my academic community. Kelly Askew introduced me to the anthropological side of ethnomusicology. Her writing showed me what compassionate and concrete ethnography should be like. Paul Anderson’s late night seminars helped me understand that musical practices have philosophical and psychological significance and that jazz criticism is part of a much larger and long- standing intellectual conversation. Charles Hiroshi Garrett, a late addition to my committee, embraced this project with enthusiasm. His generous encouragement and insightful comments are greatly appreciated.

  • Brooklyn Rediscovers Cal Massey by Jeffrey Taylor
American Music Review Formerly the Institute for Studies in American Music Newsletter Th e H. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XXXIX, Number 2 Spring 2010 Brooklyn Rediscovers Cal Massey By Jeffrey Taylor With the gleaming towers of the Time Warner Center—Jazz at Lincoln Center’s home since 2004—gazing over midtown Manhattan, and thriving jazz programs at colleges and universities throughout the world fi rmly in place, it is sometimes diffi cult to remember when jazz did not play an unquestioned role in the musical academy. Yet it wasn’t until the early 1990s that jazz was well enough entrenched in higher education that scholars could begin looking back over the way the music was integrated into music curricula: Scott DeVeaux’s frequently quoted “Construct- ing the Jazz Tradition” from 1991 is a prime example.1 The past thirty years have seen an explosion of published jazz scholarship, with dozens of new books crowd- ing shelves (or websites) every year. The vast majority of these texts are devoted to the work of a single fi gure, with Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong leading as popular subjects. But a few scholars, DeVeaux and Ingrid Monson among them, have noted the essential roles of musicians who worked primarily in the shadows, as composers, arrangers, accompanists, and sidepeople. Without these artists, whose contribution often goes completely unacknowledged in history books, jazz would have taken a very different path than the one we trace in our survey courses.
