  • A Transformational Approach to Jazz Harmony
A TRANSFORMATIONAL APPROACH TO JAZZ HARMONY Michael McClimon Submitted to the faculty of the University Graduate School in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University January 2016 Accepted by the Graduate Faculty, Indiana University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Doctoral Committee Julian Hook, Ph.D. Kyle Adams, Ph.D. Blair Johnston, Ph.D. Brent Wallarab, M.M. December 9, 2015 ii Copyright © 2016 Michael McClimon iii Acknowledgements This project would not have been possible without the help of many others, each of whom deserves my thanks here. Pride of place goes to my advisor, Jay Hook, whose feedback has been invaluable throughout the writing process, and whose writing stands as a model of clarity that I can only hope to emulate. Thanks are owed to the other members of my committee as well, who have each played important roles throughout my education at Indiana: Kyle Adams, Blair Johston, and Brent Wallarab. Thanks also to Marianne Kielian-Gilbert, who would have served on the committee were it not for the timing of the defense during her sabbatical. I would like to extend my appreciation to Frank Samarotto and Phil Ford, both of whom have deeply shaped the way I think about music, but have no official role in the dissertation itself. I am grateful to the music faculty of Furman University, who inspired my love of music theory as an undergraduate and have more recently served as friends and colleagues during the writing process.

  • Chicago Music Communities and the Everyday Significance of Playing Jazz
MUSIC PRACTICES AS SOCIAL RELATIONS: CHICAGO MUSIC COMMUNITIES AND THE EVERYDAY SIGNIFICANCE OF PLAYING JAZZ by John Frederic Behling A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Music: Musicology) in The University of Michigan 2010 Doctoral Committee: Professor Mark Allan Clague, Chair Professor Paul A. Anderson Professor Kelly M. Askew Professor Charles Hiroshi Garrett Copyright John Frederic Behling 2010 Acknowledgements In this dissertation, I argue that the solos of jazz musicians spring from the practices of the communities in which they live. What holds true for expression and creativity in jazz is no less true of academic research and writing. This dissertation would not be possible without the support and encouragement of many communities and individuals. I thank all the musicians in Chicago who played music with me and welcomed me into their communities. I am especially grateful to Aki Antonia Smith, Edwina Smith, Scott Earl Holman, and Ed Breazeale for befriending me and introducing me to the musicians and communities about whom I write. I am also grateful for the support of my academic community. Kelly Askew introduced me to the anthropological side of ethnomusicology. Her writing showed me what compassionate and concrete ethnography should be like. Paul Anderson’s late night seminars helped me understand that musical practices have philosophical and psychological significance and that jazz criticism is part of a much larger and long- standing intellectual conversation. Charles Hiroshi Garrett, a late addition to my committee, embraced this project with enthusiasm. His generous encouragement and insightful comments are greatly appreciated.

  • Edward Stitt “Sonny”
1 The TENORSAX of EDWARD STITT “SONNY” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: June 3, 2020 2 Born: Boston, Massachusetts, Feb. 2, 1924 Died: July 23, 1982 Introduction: I remember very well the controversy over Sonny Stitt, and many of us fell for those contemporary anti-Stitt attitudes, led us to believe he was just a Charlie Parker clone. Of course he was not, although admittedly his altosax playing could indicate a certain knowledge of Bird. Personally I never go for the theories that held that a few artists are models for all the rest; art does not work that way, young talents often find the same solutions without any particular close connections to the greatest names. Sonny Stitt was a creative artist, and with regard to his tenor saxophone, nobody can blame him for copying anyone, he has his own style a nd with a great technique he created some of the most memorable music on his instrument. My personal meeting with Stitt is from Molde Jazz Festival in 1963, when his first words after descending from the airplane was “Where is Dexter, I wanna play!”. And he did, and those who were there never forget it. History: Comes from a musical family, his father being a professor of music and his brother a concert pianist. Started to play the piano, at seven switched to clarinet and altosax. First jobs around Newark and Detroit and a short tour with the band of Tiny Bradshaw 1943. Was heard with Dizzy Gillespie in 1945-46 as the first important Charlie Parker-inspired altosaxophonist.
