Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 2 Abstract In their Cantiones sacrae (1575), court musicians William Byrd and Thomas Tallis declared that ‘music is indispensable to the state’ (necessarium reipub.). Yet although the relationship between Elizabethan politics and literature has been studied often, there has been little research into the political functions of music. Most accounts of court music consist of documentary research into the personnel, institutions and performance occasions, and generally assume that music’s functions were limited to entertainment and displays of magnificence. However, Elizabethans believed that musical concord promoted a social harmony that would ease the process of government; hence politics and music were seen as closely connected. This thesis is an interdisciplinary investigation into the role of music in constructing royal and courtly identities and influencing Elizabeth’s policies and patronage.

Was Shakespeare collaborating with an inferior playwright or playwrights? Did he allow so many corrupt printed versions of his works after 1604 out of indifference? Re-dating Pericles from the Jacobean to the Elizabethan era answers these questions and reveals previously unexamined connections between topical references in Pericles and events and personalities in the court of Elizabeth I: John Dee, Philip Sidney, Edward de Vere, and many others. The tournament impresas, alchemical symbolism of the story, and its lunar and astronomical imagery suggest Pericles was written long before 1608. Finally, Shakespeare’s focus on father-daughter relationships, and the importance of Marina, the daughter, as the heroine of the story, point to Pericles as written for a young girl. This thesis uses topical references, Shakespeare’s anachronisms, Shakespeare’s sources, stylometry and textual analysis, as well as Henslowe’s diary, the Stationers' Register, and other contemporary documentary evidence to determine whether there may have been versions of Pericles circulating before the accepted date of 1608.

It behooveth us therefore to be careful that our proceedings be just and honorable.” Queen Elizabeth I Course Description In this course, we will explore the ways in which Queen Elizabeth fashioned her self- presentation in order to reconcile the difficulties of her gender and her rule. We will also identify the ways in which others represented the queen, and grapple with the possible meanings behind multiple representations. We will seek to answer questions such as: How did Elizabeth use androgyny as a means of stabilizing her authority? In what ways did the queen resist gender stereotypes and combat competing representations of herself and her reign? How do the texts we will engage become themselves sites of negotiation for authority? And why, after all this time, is Elizabeth I a figure that invites our fascination?   • Images of Elizabeth I by Contrasting These Two Pictures
    Lecture (2 hours with a 15 minute break) • When Elizabeth came to the throne in 1558 she was besieged by problems. The had been terrible harvests in the previous two years and rampant inflation partly caused by Henry VIII’s reducing the silver content of coins. In the previous eleven years the country had veered from extreme Protestantism to extreme Catholicism and in 1558 the country had lost Calais, its last remnant of French territory. In addition to all this Elizabeth was a woman and it was assumed she would soon marry with the danger of the country being run by a foreigner for their own country’s interests. • Yet, by the end of her reign, England was a world power. Pope Sixtus V could not understand it: "She is only a woman, only mistress of half an island, and yet she makes herself feared by Spain, by France, by all". • How did she do it? She was intelligent, shrewd, chose her advisers well and became popular by creating and reinforcing powerful images of herself. This talk explores those images and we start by comparing two. Notes (Wikipedia and other sites & books) • Education. The nobility had a different education from us, Lady Elizabeth for example, was taught grammar, theology, history, rhetoric, logic, philosophy, arithmetic, literature, geometry, music and above all languages. By the age of eleven Elizabeth was able to speak fluently in six languages - French, Greek, Latin, Spanish, Welsh and of course English. • Many of her closest advisors were similarly schooled and Elizabethans loved puzzles, word play, and decoding obscure references.

Abstract This thesis examines the development of military culture in, and its effects on, early modern English society. Militarism during the late Elizabethan and early Stuart periods was not reinforced by military institutions directly interfering with the private lives of individuals, or by controlling the thoughts and actions of the whole nation. It was, however, strongly influenced by the culture of a military elite, represented by leading noblemen such as Leicester, Sidney, Essex, and Prince Henry, who paid considerable attention to the theatrical aspects of formal and ceremonial occasions and how their military role was portrayed in art and literature. Unlike the usual traditional portrayal of these prominent figures as incompetent military leaders who rushed blindly forwards in pursuit of military glory, we will see that through their aristocratic patronage of various art forms they promoted their image as competent Protestant warriors, and helped the public to be receptive to a variety of military ideas.

She was Dorothy (Devereux), widow of Sir Thomas Perrot (died February 1594); sister of Robert Devereux Earl of Essex, who paid, c.January 1595: ‘To the Players at Essex House at the marriage of the Earl of Northumberland, £10’. [Bath, v.261]. The Queen was godmother to two of the Earl of Northumberland’s sons (July 1596, October 1602). One of the court’s rising stars, Robert Dudley, has been given the special honor of presiding over the festivities as the Christmas Prince, Pallaphilos. An auspicious title since Elizabeth’s role in these festivities was Queen Pallas, a variation of the Greek goddess Athena. The comparison to Athena invokes wisdom and virginity, the characteristics commonly attributed to Elizabeth. Dudley’s title of Pallaphilos can be translated as “drawn to” or “lover of” Pallas. Even the naming of these particular roles expresses Dudley’s admiration of Queen Elizabeth. Much weighs upon these Christmas festivities for the future of the ambitious Dudley. A bright promise of political power and wealth stands on his horizon, should he please the Queen. Following dinner, the dancing begins. Dudley is on the dance floor, resplendent in his white costume, which is draped in the colors of Pallas: silver, gold, and purple. Surrounded by his twenty-four “valiant knights” and great court ladies, the dancing commences and these lively revelries continue on late into the night, which eventually includes spectators.1 One of these dancers goes by the name of Christopher Hatton, a man who caught Elizabeth’s eye that night through his enchanting dancing, and was afterwards welcomed into the folds of the court.
