Throughout his career Paul has worked at the Natural History Museum, London which he joined soon after completing post-doctoral studies in Swansea which in turn followed his completion of a PhD in Durham. Paul’s research interests are polymatic within the sphere of bryozoology – he has studied fossil bryozoans from all of the geological periods, and modern bryozoans from all oceanic basins. His interests include taxonomy, biodiversity, skeletal structure, ecology, evolution, history to name a few subject areas; in fact there are probably none in bryozoology that have not been the subject of his many publications. His office in the Natural History Museum quickly became a magnet for visiting bryozoological colleagues whom he always welcomed: he has always been highly encouraging of the research efforts of others, quick to collaborate, and generous with advice and information. In laboratory investigations employing time-lapse video, we observed that the keystone Antarctic sea star Odontaster validus dis- plays frequent agonistic arm-fencing bouts with conspecifics when near prey (injured sea urchin). Arm-fencing bouts consisted of 2 individuals elevating the distal portion of an arm until positioned arm tip to arm tip. This was followed by intermittent or continuous arm to arm contact, carried out in attempts to place an arm onto the aboral (upper) surface of the opponent. Fifteen (79%) of the 19 bouts observed occurred near prey (mean ± 1 SE, 13 ± 1.6 cm distance to prey; n = 13). These bouts lasted 21.05 ± 2.53 min (n = 15). In all 5 bouts that involved a large individual (radius, R: distance from the tip of an arm to the center of the oral disk; 45 to 53 mm) competing with either a medium (R = 35 to 42 mm) or small (R = 25 to 32 mm) individual, the large sea star prevailed. The only exception occurred in 2 instances where a medium-sized sea star had settled onto prey and was subsequently challenged by a larger individual. -

Of 27 species assayed, 78% had outermost tissues that were significantly unpalatable to the sympatric, omnivorous sea star Odontaster validus. Of those species with unpalatable outer tissues, 62% had inner tissues that were also unpalatable to the sea stars. Sea stars have often been considered as the primary predators of sponges in other regions of Antarctica, and their extra-oral mode of feeding threatens only the outermost sponge tissues. The observation that many of the sponges allocate defenses to inner tissues suggests the possibility that biting predators such as mesograzers, which could access inner sponge layers, may also be important in communities along the Antarctic Peninsula. In feeding bioassays with extracts from 12 of the unpalatable species in artificial foods, either lipophilic or hydrophilic extracts were deterrent in each species. These data indicate an overall level of chemical defenses in these Antarctic sponges that is comparable to, and slightly greater than, that found in a previous survey of tropical species. -

The total number of species recorded is 237, 75 of those are from deep waters and 171 from shallow waters. The most diverse group is the order Cheilostomata with 186 species, followed by the order Ctenostomata, with 26 species, and the order Cyclostomata, with 25 species. The bryozoan species richness known currently represents between 57% and 68% of the total estimated. The 135 localities stud- ied were grouped in five areas from North to South along the Portuguese coast, and divided into shallow water and deep water. The best known localities nowadays in Portugal are Armaçao de Pêra, with 82 species, and the Coast of Arrábida, with 71 species, while the Southwest coast is nearly unstudied. Most of the deep water species are considered endemic to the Lusitanian region, while in shallow waters most of them are widely distruibuted in the Atlantic-Mediterranean region. -

Описан новый вид хейлостомной мшанки Escharopsis kurilensis sp. n. из семейства Umbonulidae, от- носящегося к подотряду Flustrina. Фрагменты колонии были собраны у о-ва Шиашкотан (северные Курильские острова) на глубине 650–800 м. Новый вид отличается от других видов рода удлинен- ными аутозооидами, суженными на проксимальном крае; отсутствием синуса на проксимальном крае первичного отверстия; формой округлого авикулярия у проксимального края орифиция и внешней морфологией овицеллы. В северных морях род Escharopsis представлен единственным ви- дом Escharopsis lobata (Lamouroux, 1821). В морях Дальнего Востока этот род представлен тремя ви- дами: E. lobata, E. tatarica Androsova, 1958 и E. kurilensis Gontar sp. n. Microporella serrata sp. nov. is characterized by having a pyramid-like, high trigonal umbo hanging over the ascopore on the zooid front, and a depressed- semicircular orifice with a denticulate distal edge. Microporella unca sp. nov. is unique in having avicularia with beaked mandibles, similar to those of “the bird's head type” avicularia in the Bugulidae. The evolution of two different types of avicularian mandibles in the genus is briefly discussed from functional and ecological points of view. Résumé : Deux nouvelles espèces japonaises de Microporella (Bryozoa, Cheilostomatida) dans la collection Döderlein, Musée Zoologique, Strasbourg. Deux espèces nouvelles du genre Microporella de la baie de Sagami (Honshu, Japon) sont décrites, d'après un matériel récemment découvert dans la collection Döderlein, déposée au Musée Zoologique, Strasbourg, France. Microporella serra- ta sp. nov. se caractérise par un umbo haut, trigonal, en forme de pyramide, qui s'insère au-dessus de l'ascopore sur la face frontale du zoïde et un orifice semi-circulaire déprimé avec un bord distal denticulé. -
