It has certainly been a big month of acvies, as we get in the last of the warmer weather before the coolness of autumn sets in. Our caving team, under the watchful eye of Meredith Stewart, spent a great weekend down at Bungonia exploring all that is underground. reat opportunity to hone their skills in readiness for our Caving Proficiency eekend, being held at ee Jasper. This is always a popular weekend, where we are expecng over parcipants. David (Macca) McKinley, Paul Jefferies & Jordan Fenech doing a bit of a pose, underground at Bungonia.

Our Bushwalking team have been out and about with an overnight hike up in the Bouddi aonal Park on the Central Coast. A great week was had by all. Big thanks to Tristan Flores for organising it and making it all happen. ..Is that Ma Harris ensuring that tree doesnt fall down on the resng hikers

I had the opportunity to aend one of oss Smiths Canyoning trips, along with Venturers from 1st Oakville. It was a really fantasc day. e did Twister and ocky Creek Canyons both of which are uite spectacular, and great introducon canyons. The Venturers, along with ose Smith their Venturer Leader, should really be congratulated on their enthusiasc approach to the whole day. Big thank you to oss for running the day, and to uenn apier, who also helped out on the day.

Tracey ansford ran a very successful Joey Cub Canoe Fun day at Lake Parramaa, which I had the pleasure of aending. Again with big numbers in aendance, we ran a number of diering acvies on the day which worked really well. Thank you to Keith Travers John van den Burg and Bryan all who helped out on the water during the day. e also had the opportunity to take a couple of the new sit-on top kayaks, recently purchased, for a bit of spin. Verdict? Lots of fun! (I would love to take one out for a bit a splash in the surf, but I might have to do that on the quite)!

3D Printer I've been looking at 3D printers, both ready made and kits, for about 18 months. Not that I have anything urgent that I wanted to make on one; rather as a challenge to learn 3D designing and try the unique method of building that it makes possible. So I was rather surprised when ALDI offered a pre-assembled 3D printer at a compeve price. I looked up the specicaons and brand name and found that it was a rebadge of a well known hinese one. he construcon, packaging and accessories were idencal, and the comments and quesons on its forum were posive, so I bought one. In 1 I made a ashing woggle with a plasc pipe ng, a logic chip, LDs and two 3v cells. It worked but was complicated to make and used epensive at that me Lithium cells. o-day's microcontrollers are more versale lower power, smaller, and run off 3 volts, so it is possible to make an interesng, surface mount, mul LD or sound or lue-tooth module on about an inch s are sll in inches square board . he green one on the right is my rst aempt at 3D design and prinng. It is a woggle chassis with a slot for a 1” square and space to slide in 2 R201 or 1 R2032 Li cells. he range of laments that are etrudible include: clear and clear coloured for light pipes, conducve, and glow-in-the- dark, so the design possibilies are interesng

Chemistry Night with Murray Farm First a largish group of combined Murray Farm and Ermington Joeys. Here I am showing them the cups of White Vinegar and Baking Soda (an Acid and an Alkaline), oth clear soluons. hey write their name with a coon ud dipped in the icar. which will turn to red on the yellow paper, then with Vinegar on the red paper to show their name in yellow. his is actually the second acity while we wait for the water to rise up the filter paper cone to separate the asic felt p colours into their component colours (chromatography). I rememered ust in me to remoe the cones from their trays of water. he water connues to wick up another cenmetre or two aer it is remoed.

he Cus were next, a fair sized numer comprising the aoe two Groups. We start with sugar decomposing with Sulphuric acid, which takes a couple of minutes (you can see it turning the nice white solid to lack in the ackground), so I show Condi's crystals dissoling in water to gie purple streamers. hen add Hydrogen Peroxide to change it to rown Manganese Dioxide then clear with Oxygen ules swirling around. By this me the sugar is rising out of the eaker eming steam and urnt sugar smells. he pillar of Caron is aout twice the height of the eaker and as rile as honeycom. uiet a dynamic demonstraon of chemical change and heat of reacon.

18 This photo shows a Sixer about to light a Magnesium wick in Zinc and Sulphur mixture for the final green flames and billowing yellow smoke end to the night. All the Cubs are involved in feeling and smelling Sulphur and its plasc forms as well as seeing each of the lements and compounds and smelling the gaseous products of reacon such as Sulphur ioxide and ydrogen Sulphide roen egg gas. Leaders - Grace and Mellissa assembled a nice group to make our visit memorable and Grace took these photos to record the night.
