Two subspecies are described as new to science, viz. C. b. nordsiecki and C. b. polimilitis. INTRODUCTION During malacological fieldwork in NE Greece, the authors, searching for clausiliids in particular, came across some geographically localized forms of Carinigera buresi (A.J. Wagner, 1927). Nearly all these vicariant forms are mentioned already in the literature but of them still have valid (Nordsieck, 1977), some no names. They proved to be more differentiated be clearly than could concluded from the published data. Here we cha- illustrate and these of which racterize, name taxa as subspecies, two as new to science. Carinigera buresi can be recognized by its medium-sized (height 10.4-19.3 mm), dark- to with less white sutural line greyish-brown shell, a more or prominent, narrow, and some white sutural papillae onthe initial teleoconchwhorls. NAA was first applied in archaeology in 1974 at the Radioanalytical Laboratory, and since 1989 has been one of the primary analytical techniques of the ‘Demokritos’ archaeometry programme. A case study is also presented, concerning chemical patterning of the black-on-red Neolithic pottery class from Macedonia. Four chemical groups were identified, each corresponding to a different area of production. It is shown that this standardized concept of pottery technology and style was spread out within at least eastern Macedonia. The period between 6500 and 5000 cal yr BP is one of the least studied episodes of rapid climate change at the end of the Late Neolithic. This period is characterized by a dramatic decline in settlement and a cul-tural break in the Balkans. High-resolution paleoenvironmental proxy data obtained in the Lower Angitis Valley en-ables an examination of the societal responses to rapid climatic change in Greece. Development of a lasting fluvio-lacustrine environment followed by enhanced fluvial activity is evident from 6000 cal yr BP. Paleoecological data show a succession of dry events at 5800–5700, 5450 and 5000–4900 cal yr BP.

When compared with the neighbouring regions, the ecological characteristics of the Struma River Valley are particularly heterogeneous and the Neolithic populations must have adapted to this distinctive and localized ecological setting. It then becomes reasonable to ask if the evolution of cultural variability in the Struma River Valley was at least partially driven by the ecological setting and differentiation in the evolution of the early agricultural niche. In this thesis, I apply an approach based on niche construction theory and Maxent species distribution modeling in order to characterize the relationship between culture and ecology during each stage of the Neolithic Period and to assess diachronic change. An interpretation of the results demonstrates that the continuous reconstruction of the early agricultural niche allowed for settlement expansion into new eco-cultural niches presenting different natural selection pressures and that cultural change followed. I also found that cultural and historical contingencies played an equally important role on the evolution of populations and that ecological factors alone cannot account for the numerous episodes of cultural diversification that occurred throughout the region.

The dissertation deals with the study of unpublished figurines from the Tsakos collection of the Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki. Micrographic objects are a very interesting category of prehistoric material culture and among them figurines are the most representative. Neolithic figurine production bears multiple aspects of ideological and social background. In Macedonia, human and animals are the main topic and the aesthetic context in the performance of their forms ranges from complete stylization to impressive realism. The focus of this dissertation is to study figurines from multiple aspects, i.e. construction, typology and morphology. Regarding technology, the assemblage is examined with respect to raw material, construction techniques, surface treatment and decoration. Concerning morphology/typology, the figurines are analyzed in the context of their form, gesture, posture, representation, sex and iconography.

This had been at the basis of an unavoidably patchy understanding of the mechanism of the European Neolithic as a whole. My work targets the lack in understanding of a little-known area in the Southern Balkans. This thesis is about the Neolithic of the Strymon River which flows from Bulgaria into Greece. Hailed as a highway or incoming neolithization groups, the Neolithic of the river’s catchment is little-known, despite the richness of its material and settlement records. The thesis presents material previously unavailable to English-speaking audiences and an original perspective on the Neolithic of south- eastern Europe. It is a work which aims to avoid the separation of the river’s catchment based on national borders. The analytical model which this work proposes is of a mutliscalar nature, incorporating both temporal and spatial scales, in an attempt at creating a holistic understanding of a prehistoric area.
