Transgender in Games a Comparative Study of Transgender Characters in Games
Transgender in Games A Comparative Study of Transgender Characters in Games Emil Christenson and Danielle Unéus Faculty of Arts Department of Game Design Bachelor’s Thesis in Game Design, 15 Credits Programme: Game Design and Graphics Supervisors: Ann-Sofie Lönngren, Hans Svensson Examiner: Masaki Hayashi September, 2017 Abstract This thesis contains an analysis of transgender characters in games. The method for selecting the characters was based on the importance of the character in the game with the requirement that the game must have sold at least half a million units. The goal was to analyse well-known characters in gaming history to get an overview of how the game industry has represented transgender in games. Out of 102 characters only six of them met the requirements and have been analysed with the use of queer theory. Gender and how the characters break the norms of what is feminine and what is masculine is in focus. In the analysis, the characters are examined through their mannerism, design, personality and dialogue. The analysis is then summarized into identifiable patterns. The result of this thesis is a better understanding of how transgender characters are portrayed in the game industry. Keywords: Transgender, Video Games, LGBTQ, Character Representation, Queer Theory Abstrakt I denna uppsats analyseras transgenuskaraktärer i spel. -

Virtual Spectating: Hearing Beyond the Video Arcade
Virtual Spectating: Hearing Beyond the Video Arcade Norman Makoto Su Patrick C. Shih School of Information and Library Studies Department of Informatics University College Dublin University of California, Irvine Dublin 4, Ireland Irvine, CA 92697-9440 [email protected] [email protected] The latest in the most popular head-to-head fighting video series, Super Street Fighter IV by Capcom, now features spectating functionality. Coupled with audio chat, players can both watch and participate in matches with anyone in the world. We describe a video analysis of over 36 hours of gameplay in SSF4. Our results show that players can deftly structure audio when spectating to transform gameplay in SSF4. This new hybrid spectator sport in which boundaries between actor and audience are blurred exhibits three significant characteristics: the audio recreates the arcade culture, appropriates “invisible” but real players, and symbolically creates power relations between mute and speaking gamers. We also present exploratory evidence that suggests a starkly different experience for female gamers who wish to audibly join in virtual spectating. Spectating, Performing, Audio, Video games, Fighting games, Super Street Fighter IV 1. Adjustment Description New V-Shift System Added
Adjustment Description Added the new V-Shift mechanic (MK+HP with no directional input). V-Shift is a defensive mechanic that consumes one stock of V-Gauge to parry an attack and distance yourself from the opponent. By pressing MK+HP again (or continue to hold the input) during the action after a successful parry, you can perform a counterattack known as a V- Shift Break. A V-Shift can be performed at any time as long as the character is on the ground and able to move freely. This is one way in which the mechanics differs greatly from V-Reversals. New V-Shift System Added Additionally, V-Reversals always restore stun on activation, whether on hit or block. However, V-Shifts do not guarantee a set effect. Whether or not the parry is successful and the effect is triggered depends on the opponent's move the timing of the V-Shift, etc., meaning player judgment is needed to maximize its utility. Though it's a somewhat difficult system to master, it provides players with a defensive option against attacks/combos that are hard to counter. For more on V-Shifts, please see the in-game demonstrations and the frame data at the Shadaloo Combat Research Institute. Adjustment Description Henceforth "combo count" will be divided into three types: "combo-count start value", "combo count gain", and "combo count limit". Air combos in Street Fighter V are organized into these three types of combo count; their details are as follows. - Combo-Count Start Value: The numerical value used to indicate when an air combo starts from a particular move. -

Paradigm Shift: How the Evolution of Two Generations of Home
PARADIGM SHIFT: HOW THE EVOLUTION OF TWO GENERATIONS OF HOME CONSOLES, ARCADES, AND COMPUTERS INFLUENCED AMERICAN CULTURE, 1985-1995 By Jason Terence Wiley A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS IN HISTORY University of Central Oklahoma Spring, 2016 iii Abstract Author: Jason Terence Wiley Thesis Chair: Dr. Patricia Loughlin Title of Thesis: Paradigm Shift: How the Evolution of Two Generations of Home Consoles, Arcades, and Computers Influenced American Culture, 1985-1995 Abstract: As of 2016, unlike many popular media forms found here in the United States, video games possess a unique influence, one that gained its own a large widespread appeal, but also its own distinct cultural identity created by millions of fans both here stateside and across the planet. Yet, despite its significant contributions, outside of the gaming’s arcade golden age of the early 1980s, the history of gaming post Atari shock goes rather unrepresented as many historians simply refuse to discuss the topic for trivial reasons thus leaving a rather noticeable gap within the overall history. One such important aspect not covered by the majority of the scholarship and the primary focus of thesis argues that the history of early modern video games in the North American market did not originate during the age of Atari in the 1970s and early 1980s. Instead, the real genesis of today’s market and popular gaming culture began with the creation and establishment of the third and fourth generation of video games, which firmly solidified gaming as both a multi-billion dollar industry and as an accepted form of entertainment in the United States.
