He was their fourth child, having two older brothers and an older sister, and was their only child born in Utah. The Harmston branch of the family tree traces its roots back to Lincolnshire, England, where a town bears their name. His father was born in Missouri in 1861 and died in Roosevelt, in 1922. His mother was born in Maine in 1869 and also died in Roosevelt, in 1937. Fred’s parents met in Hyannis, Nebraska, and were married November 27, 1897, in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, the first couple to be wed in the new Congregational Church. Fred’s father was a pharmacist, and a graduate of the College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois. He operated drug stores in Teluride Colorado, Weiser Idaho, White Lake and Wessington Springs in South Dakota, and finally in Roosevelt Utah. The family arrived in Roosevelt four years after it was settled. -

PREFACE The principal value of fa cis is that they give us something to think about. A scientific textbook, therefore, should contain a fair amount of reliable information, though it may be a matter of choice with the author whether he leaves it to the reader to formulate his own ideas as to the meaning of the facts, or whether he attempts to guide the reader's thoughts along what seem to him to be the proper channels. The writer of the present text, being convinced that generalizations are more important than mere knowledge of facts, and being also somewhat partial to his own way of thinking about insects, has not been able to refrain entirely from presenting the facts of insect anatomy in a way to suggest relations between them that possibly exist only in his own mind. Each of the several chapters of this book, in other words, is an attempt to give a coherent morphological view of the fundamental nature and the apparent evolution of a particular group of organs or associated struc tures. -

Increasingly, empirical studies are helping explain the role of ecology in generating biodiversity. Adaptive radiations are often propelled by selective fitness tradeoffs experienced by individuals that invade new habitats, resulting in reproductive isolation from ancestral conspecifics and potentially cladogenesis. -

Corresponding author e-mal: [email protected] Abstract: Nine hundred eighty species belonging to 182 genera of 15 subfamilies of the family Dolichopodidae were investigated to study antennal morphology. Length measurements of scape, pedicel, postpedicel and arista and height measurements of postpedicel bases were performed, and 4 ratios were selected. Use of morphometric characteristics of Dolichopodidae antennae allows meaningful distinctions between subfamilies to be made. Using these criteria, a cladistic tree of Dolichopodidae subfamilies was built. Key words: Diptera, Dolichopodidae, antenna, morphology. Introduction Antennae of adult flies are important sense organs and play an important role in insect activity. Besides, considerable morphological variability of antennal structures makes them a major diagnostic characteristic in insect taxonomy. Characteristics of antennal morphology have been extensively studied (Mc–Alpine 2010), widely used in generic tables and accepted as a perspective for taxonomy and understanding of evolutionary processes (Stuckenberg 1999). Dolichopodidae antennae comprise four segments. Distinctions between segment form and size, existence (or lack) of hairs and processes, and also location of arista are important characteristics for genera identification. Their color can have both specific and generic diagnostic characteristics. The first antennal segment (scape) of various genera can be bare or covered with hairs (species Argyra Macquart, 1834, subfamily Dolichopodinae − with the scape bearing some dorsal bristles; species Melanderia Aldrich, 1922 with the scape bearing ventral bristles).
