Considered primarily insectivorous predators on large arthropods but taking occasional small vertebrate prey, pallid bats were recently shown to be at least seasonally omnivorous; they demonstrate unusual dietary flexibility and opportunism in certain parts of their geographic range and at different times of year. In a few areas they take nectar from cactus flowers and eat cactus fruit pulp and seeds. Until recently mesquite bugs were primarily tropical- subtropical inhabitants of Mexico and Central America but have since occupied the southwestern United States where mesquite trees occur. Pallid bats regularly use night roosts as temporary shelters in which to process and consume large arthropods caught near their foraging areas. -

Pinyon Pine Mortality Alters Communities of Ground-Dwelling Arthropods
Western North American Naturalist 74(2), © 2014, pp. 162–184 PINYON PINE MORTALITY ALTERS COMMUNITIES OF GROUND-DWELLING ARTHROPODS Robert J. Delph1,2,6, Michael J. Clifford2,3, Neil S. Cobb2, Paulette L. Ford4, and Sandra L. Brantley5 ABSTRACT.—We documented the effect of drought-induced mortality of pinyon pine (Pinus edulis Engelm.) on com- munities of ground-dwelling arthropods. Tree mortality alters microhabitats utilized by ground-dwelling arthropods by increasing solar radiation, dead woody debris, and understory vegetation. Our major objectives were to determine (1) whether there were changes in community composition, species richness, and abundance of ground-dwelling arthro- pods associated with pinyon mortality and (2) whether specific habitat characteristics and microhabitats accounted for these changes. We predicted shifts in community composition and increases in arthropod diversity and abundance due to the presumed increased complexity of microhabitats from both standing dead and fallen dead trees. We found signifi- cant differences in arthropod community composition between high and low pinyon mortality environments, despite no differences in arthropod abundance or richness. Overall, 22% (51 taxa) of the arthropod community were identified as being indicators of either high or low mortality. Our study corroborates other research indicating that arthropods are responsive to even moderate disturbance events leading to changes in the environment. These arthropod responses can be explained in part due to the increase in woody debris and reduced canopy cover created by tree mortality. Arthropods serve this purpose because they are abundant and diverse in urban areas, and relatively easy to collect. Over seven years, in the Central Arizona Phoenix area, arthropod communities in three urban habitat categories were collected and compared to arthropods in natural desert using pitfall traps and non-parametric analyses. -

E-mail: [email protected] Based on the newly established synonymy of the type species (i.e., Menederopsis constrictus Koch, 1954 = Archinamaqua lyleae Schawaller, 2012 syn. nov.) the genus-group name Archinamaqua Schawaller, 2012 (Pimeliinae: Tentyriini) is interpreted as a junior synonym of Menederopsis Koch, 1954 (Tenebrioninae: Eurynotina). This newly interpreted taxon has a restricted distributional area on sand dunes in Namaqualand, western South Africa. Key words : Tenebrioninae, Platynotini, Eurynotina, Menederopsis , Pimeliinae, Tentyriini, new synonymy, female terminalia The genus Ar chinamaqua was established by Schawaller (2012) for a single newly described South African species, A. lyleae. Although, the morphology of this taxon seemed to be enigmatic, based on the comparison with Archinamibia Koch, 1952 and Broomium Koch, 1950 this genus was placed within the darkling beetle tribe Tentyriini (Pimeliinae). All these genera contain highly adapted sand living species.
