Eleven species of Elateridae (Coleoptera) were collected during a two-year arthropod inventory survey at the Cuatrociénegas Natural Protected Area, Coahuila, Mexico. Aeolus cuatro new species, Horistonotus coahuila new species, and Megapenthes cienegas new species are described for the first time. Additionally reported as new state records are Conoderus athoides (LeConte), C. lividus (De Geer), Deilelater mexicanus (Champion), Esthesopus parcus Horn, and Dipropus rufulus (Candèze). Sixteen species of click beetle are now recorded from Coahuila. The sampled habitats and the environmental setting are briefly described with images of each sampling site. Key words. Once especies de Elateridae (Coleoptera) fueron recolectadas durante una encuesta de inventario de artrópodos de dos años en la Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna, Cuatrociénegas, Coahuila, México. Aeolus cuatro nueva especie, Horistonotus coahuila nueva especie, y Megapenthes cienegas nueva especie se descri- ben por primera vez. También se reportan a Conoderus athoides (LeConte), C. lividus (De Geer), Deilelater mexi- canus (Champion), Esthesopus parcus Horn, y Dipropus rufulus (Candèze) como nuevos registros estatales. Elateridos, taxonomía, reserva de la biosfera, hábitat, duna de yeso, humedales del desierto. Introduction The click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) of Coahuila, Mexico were never summarized. Champion (1895, 1896a, b) reported four species from the state. In 2010 and 2011, personnel from the Museum of Southwestern Biology conducted a two-year arthropod survey in the Cuatrociénegas basin (Fig. 1, 2) (Lightfoot et al. 2017). The click beetles collected during the inventory are reported here. Cuatrociénegas was declared a Natural Protected Area in 1994, and is managed locally by the office of the Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Cuatrociénegas (APFFCC) under the direction of the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP), a unit of the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT - Secretary for the Environment and Natural Resources). We adopt the naming and spelling as used by the APFFCC. The elaterid specimens recorded below were collected as part of an arthropod inventory of the APFFCC. The project was sponsored by the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) Sister Parks Program, in cooperation with CONANP, representing Cuatrociéngas. The overall study was an inventory of Cuatrociénegas (APFFCC), Coahuila, Mexico and White Sands National Monument (White Sands), New Mexico, U.S.A. White Sands and Cuatrociénegas both represent extensive landscapes of gypsum and saline soils including sand dunes, and both are Chihuahuan Desert basins surrounded by uplifted limestone fault- block mountains. White Sands has the largest gypsum dune field in the world (1000 km2) and little surface water, while Cuatrociénegas has a small (20 km2) gypsum dune field, but extensive natural 2 • INSECTA MUNDI 0678, December 2018 JOHNSON AND LIGHTFOOT springs, ponds, lakes, streams, marshes and other wetlands (Fig. 9–13). The University of New Mexico – Museum of Southwestern Biology, Division of Arthropods (UNM-MSB) conducted a series of field trips to Cuatrociénegas in 2010 and 2011 to sample arthropods, particularly for undescribed species. Although a wide variety of arthropods was sampled in the survey and reported elsewhere (see below), only click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) are reported here. Three of these species are regarded as new to science and are described here for the first time. A summary of click beetle species now known from Coahuila is provided, as is a generalized description of the environmental setting of the APFFCC. Materials and Methods Specimens studied derived from the aforementioned survey conducted under permit numbers 03044 (2010) and 03994 (2011) from the Subsecretaría de Gestión Para la Protección Ambiental, Dirección General de Vida Silvestre, Mexico, D.F. The primary types of related species were examined. Occurrence records for click beetles reported from Coahuila were taken from an unpublished compilation of the species of these beetles for the Americas, and supplemented

Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation.     A faunal survey of the elateroidea of Montana by Catherine Elaine Seibert A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology Montana State University © Copyright by Catherine Elaine Seibert (1993) Abstract: The beetle family Elateridae is a large and taxonomically difficult group of insects that includes many economically important species of cultivated crops. Elaterid larvae, or wireworms, have a history of damaging small grains in Montana. Although chemical seed treatments have controlled wireworm damage since the early 1950's, it is- highly probable that their availability will become limited, if not completely unavailable, in the near future. In that event, information about Montana's elaterid fauna, particularity which species are present and where, will be necessary for renewed research efforts directed at wireworm management. A faunal survey of the superfamily Elateroidea, including the Elateridae and three closely related families, was undertaken to determine the species composition and distribution in Montana. Because elateroid larvae are difficult to collect and identify, the survey concentrated exclusively on adult beetles. This effort involved both the collection of Montana elateroids from the field and extensive borrowing of the same from museum sources. Results from the survey identified one artematopid, 152 elaterid, six throscid, and seven eucnemid species from Montana. County distributions for each species were mapped. In addition, dichotomous keys, and taxonomic and biological information, were compiled for various taxa. Species of potential economic importance were also noted, along with their host plants. Although the knowledge of the superfamily' has been improved significantly, it is not complete.

In recent years there have been numerous studies focused on the anticancer action of cantharidin and its derivatives. Despite the recent interest in blister beetles, cytogenetic and molecular studies in this group are scarce and most of them use only classical chromosome staining techniques. In a few areas they take nectar from cactus flowers and eat cactus fruit pulp and seeds. Until recently mesquite bugs were primarily tropical- subtropical inhabitants of Mexico and Central America but have since occupied the southwestern United States where mesquite trees occur. Pallid bats regularly use night roosts as temporary shelters in which to process and consume large arthropods caught near their foraging areas.

This chapter describes the Elateridae of Alberta (144 species), Saskatchewan (108 species), and Manitoba (109 species). It provides current names for species, as well as synonymized names that persist in the literature. Also discussed are the species that have been left out during recent changes to elaterid renaming and classification, although no new name combinations are given. The chapter outlines species distributions, biogeography where known, and the life histories of five common species: Aeolus mellillus (Say), Agriotes mancus (Say), Hypnoidus bicolor (Eschscholtz), Limonius californicus (Mannerheim), and Selatosomus aeripennis destructor (Brown). An examination of the seasonal movements and activity of larvae in response to soil temperature and moisture and moulting cycles is followed by an overview of past research on Prairie Province species. The chapter concludes with a discussion of current research needs and management issues. Résumé. Le présent chapitre décrit les Elateridae de l’Alberta (138 espèces), de la Saskatchewan (76 espèces) et du Manitoba (104 espèces).     134 Majka, Chandler, & Donahue ELATERIDAE: Click Beetles Selatosomus pulcher (LeConte) photo: Tom Murray The Elateridae (click beetles) constitute a diverse and species-rich family of beetles. According to Johnson (2002c), it is the ninth most taxonomically diverse beetle family globally with about 965 valid species in North America, a number that Marske and Ivie (2003) used to rank it as the seventh- most species rich family in North America. The larvae of some elaterids are important in agriculture as rhizophagous species that feed on underground parts of a variety of plants, and in forest ecology as saproxylic species that feed on wood decaying organisms, or as predators in woodland environments. One hundred and sixty species of Elateridae (152 Nearctic; 7 Holarctic; 1 adventive Palaearctic) have been recorded in Maine, 27 of which are newly recorded in the state. Procter (1946) provided an annotated list of 48 species from Mount Desert Island, and Dearborn and Donahue (1993) provided an annotated list of 106 species from the state. This account follows the systematics and taxonomy of Johnson (2002c) and Majka and Johnson (2008).
