Mapping Prosopis glandulosa (mesquite) invasion in the arid environment of South Africa using remote sensing techniques NYASHA FLORENCE MURERIWA 0604748V Supervisor: Dr Elhadi Adam A dissertation submitted to the School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies, Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand in fulfilment of the academic requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Environmental Sciences March 2016 Johannesburg South Africa Abstract Decades after the first introduction of the Prosopis spp. (mesquite) to South Africa in the late 1800s for its benefits, the invasive nature of the species became apparent as its spread in regions of South Africa resulting in devastating effects to biodiversity, ecosystems and the socio- economic wellbeing of affected regions. Various control and management practices that include biological, physical, chemical and integrated methods have been tested with minimal success as compared to the rapid spread of the species. From previous studies, it has been noted that one of the reasons for the low success rates in mesquite control and management is a lack of sufficient information on the species invasion dynamic in relation to its very similar co-existing species. In order to bridge this gap in knowledge, vegetation species mapping techniques that use remote sensing methods need to be tested for the monitoring, detection and mapping of the species spread. Unlike traditional field survey methods, remote sensing techniques are better at monitoring vegetation as they can cover very large areas and are time-effective and cost- effective. Thus, the aim of this research was to examine the possibility of mapping and spectrally discriminating Prosopis glandulosa from its native co-existing species in semi-arid parts of South Africa using remote sensing methods. -

Sabree, Advisor Rachelle Adams Norman Johnson Laura Kubatko Copyrighted by Alejandro Otero-Bravo 2020 Abstract Nutritional symbioses between bacteria and insects are prevalent, diverse, and have allowed insects to expand their feeding strategies and niches. It has been well characterized that long-term insect-bacterial mutualisms cause genome reduction resulting in extremely small genomes, some even approaching sizes more similar to organelles than bacteria. While several symbioses have been described, each provides a limited view of a single or few stages of the process of reduction and the minority of these are of extracellular symbionts. This dissertation aims to address the knowledge gap in the genome evolution of extracellular insect symbionts using the stink bug – Pantoea system. Specifically, how do these symbionts genomes evolve and differ from their free- living or intracellular counterparts? In the introduction, we review the literature on extracellular symbionts of stink bugs and explore the characteristics of this system that make it valuable for the study of symbiosis. We find that stink bug symbiont genomes are very valuable for the study of genome evolution due not only to their biphasic lifestyle, but also to the degree of coevolution with their hosts. i In Chapter 1 we investigate one of the traits associated with genome reduction, high mutation rates, for Candidatus ‘Pantoea carbekii’ the symbiont of the economically important pest insect Halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug, and evaluate its potential for elucidating host distribution, an analysis which has been successfully used with other intracellular symbionts. -

Why don’t they know the basics of Greek and Latin? Either they don’t pay attention in class, or in many cases schools just don’t teach these classic languages of science anymore. For those who are Latin and Greek-challenged, noted (fictional) Victorian entomologist and explorer, Prof. J. Phineas Michaelson, will present English translations of the scientific names that have been given to some of the popular common arthropods available for public exhibits. This paper will explore how species get their names, as well as a brief look at some of the naturalists that named them. INTRODUCTION Our education system just isn’t what it used to be. Classic languages such as Latin and Greek are no longer a part of standard curriculum. Unfortunately, this puts modern students of science at somewhat of a disadvantage compared to our predecessors when it comes to scientific names. In the insectarium world, Latin and Greek names are used for the arthropods that we display, but for most young entomologists, these words are just a challenge to pronounce and lack meaning. Working with arthropods, we all know that Entomology is the study of these animals. Sounding similar but totally different, Etymology is the study of the origin of words, and the history of word meaning. -

Forestgeo Arthropod Initiative Annual Report 2018
FORESTGEO ARTHROPOD INITIATIVE ANNUAL REPORT 2018 Program coordinator: Yves Basset, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), [email protected] I. BACKGROUND AND PARTICIPATING FORESTGEO SITES The ‘Arthropod Initiative’ of the Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) aims at monitoring key arthropod assemblages over long-term and studying insect-plant interactions over the network of the Forest Global Earth Observatories (ForestGEO, https://forestgeo.si.edu/research-programs/arthropod-initiative). The Initiative integrates with ongoing monitoring of plant dynamics within the ForestGEO network, causes minimum possible impact to the plots and focus on a priority set of assemblages chosen for their ecological relevance, taxonomic tractability and ease of sampling. At each participating ForestGEO site, the first years of the program are usually devoted to a ‘baseline’ survey. The baseline survey is followed by longer-term programs of field work and analysis, organized into two main sub-programs: monitoring, and key interaction studies. The monitoring sub-program is directed to detecting long-term changes, as reflected in priority assemblages, driven by climatic cycles, climatic change and landscape scale habitat alteration. Monitoring protocols are derived from those used during the baseline survey. The food web approach of interaction studies targets interactions between plants and specific insect assemblages, with different protocols than those used for monitoring. So far, the Arthropod Initiative involves nine ForestGEO sites: Yasuni in Ecuador, Barro Colorado Island (BCI) in Panama, Rabi in Gabon, Khao Chong (KHC) in Thailand, Tai Po Kau (Hong Kong), Dinghushan and Xishuangbanna (XTBG) in China, Bukit Timah in Singapore and Wanang (WAN) in Papua New Guinea. At BCI, four full-time research assistants were in charge of arthropod monitoring protocols in 2018: Filonila Perez, Ricardo Bobadilla, Yacksecari Lopez and Alejandro Ramirez. -

The Water Relations of the Mesquite A.L.BAKKE ABBistant Professor of Botany, Iowa State College The Mesquite1 (Prosopis relutina Wooten) is one of the most outstanding shrubs or trees of the desert regions of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Mexico. Its rather low form ing b11anches covered with leaves where each leaf is made up of 6 to 30 leaflets, makes . this tree a conspicuous outstanding vegetative form as compared with the grease wood and the cactus. The Mesquite is practically the only tree that thrives in a hot dry climate such as one experiences in southern Arizona and New Mexico. To the travelers in this region the distribution of this plant is of special importance, for through it he is able to obtain fire wood for his camp fire. -

Accordingly, new combinations are herein proposed for the species currently included in these genera: Neoeriocera mitrula (Guenée, 1852) comb. nov. for Eriocera mitrula Guenée, 1852; Latiphea berresoides (Hampson, 1893) comb. nov. for Lobocheilos berresoides Hampson, 1893; Latiphea plana (Swinhoe, 1890) comb. nov. for Lobocheilos illattioides Hampson, 1891 and Kocakina fidelis (Grote, 1874) comb. nov. for Himella fidelis Grote, 1874. The purpose of the present paper is to bring the taxonomy of noctuid moths into accordance with the requirements of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999). It considers homonymous genus group names of noctuid moths introduced from 1758 to 2004. In an effort to reduce the number of homonyms in Noctuidae (Lepidoptera), we systematically checked all generic names published. -

About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization. -
