    Wir fahren von Tröpolach aus durch das Gailtal über Hermagor bis BIKER nach St. STEFAN. Nach der Ortstafel St. Stefan biegen wir links zur WINDISCHEN HÖHE ab. Im Ort biegen wir rechts ins Drautal ein und fahren bis nach VILLACH NORD, wo wir wieder rechts abbiegen. As we were not familiar with these areas we were lucky that some experts guided us to some remarkable places and that we had received some hints in advance. In particular, we’d like to thank Jürgen Gebhart, Mario Schweiger, the team of Herpetofauna.at and Wouter Beukema. Here is our travel diary: The Alps near Oberstdorf 03.07.: Arrival in Oberstdorf. At hot temperatures we went to the Nebelhorn for photographing flowers. In our case we followed the ’Castello’ signs from the centre of town. You enter the castle through an ornate gate in the massive walls, defended by angled basti- ons. In German this ’straitening’ is called a ’swinger’ and on entering the gate you get the apropriateness of the terminology as the walls press in on you. The Hungarian term ’slaughter passage’ is equally apt. From the battlements could pour down stones, shot and boiling oil onto the attackers. As we progress along the battlements into the castle we go back centuries. You don’t have to be a military historian to realise the round battlements of the citadel were built in the early middle ages. The Winged Lion tells us of Venetian rule here until the start of the fifteenth century.

But the conditions which prevailed in the lands beyond the Adriatic during the year succeeding the signing of the Armistice were so extraordinary, so picturesque, so wholly without parallel in European history, that they form a sort of epilogue, as it were, to the story of the great conflict. To have witnessed the dismemberment of an empire which was hoary with antiquity when the Republic in which we live was yet unborn; to have seen insignificant states expand almost overnight into powerful nations; to have seen and talked with peoples who did not know from day to day the form of government under which they were living, or the name of their ruler, or the color of their flag; to have seen millions of human beings transferred from sovereignty to sovereignty like cattle which have been sold—these are sights the like of which will probably not be seen again in our times or in those of our children, and, because they serve to illustrate a chapter of History which is of immense importance, I have tried to sketch them, in brief, sharp outline, in this book. Emphasis is put on the Treaty itself and the months of negotiations between Italy, France, Russia and Britain that allotted Italy various territorial spoils along the Eastern Adriatic Sea where thousands of Italians lived, giving rise to irredentist claims. The eventual refusal of the inter-Allied delegates to honor the Treaty at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 resulted in social discontent and a feeling of betrayal among numerous Italians. The thesis also examines the political transformation of Benito Mussolini from his Socialist origins to being the fascist Premier of Italy. Particular emphasis is placed on how Mussolini used the Treaty of London as a propaganda tool to obtain political power. Fascist foreign policy regarding the unfulfilled articles of the treaty is shown as a prime motivating tenet to rationalize Italian expansion.
