Seite 1 Von 19 Seite 1 von 19 home trip reports lizards about links Alps, 03. -17.07.2010 Our first trip to the Alps led us to the Allgäu area, the Julian Alps and Carinthia. As we were not familiar with these areas we were lucky that some experts guided us to some remarkable places and that we had received some hints in advance. In particular, we’d like to thank Jürgen Gebhart, Mario Schweiger, the team of Herpetofauna.at and Wouter Beukema. Here is our travel diary: The Alps near Oberstdorf 03.07.: Arrival in Oberstdorf. At hot temperatures we went to the Nebelhorn for photographing flowers. Gymnadenia rhellicani Seite 2 von 19 A rather rare species: Plebeius glandon 04.07.: Herping-trip with Jürgen Gebhart near Füssen. We almost found all herpeto-highlights of that area! Besides of this Salamandra atra we saw Rana temporaria, Bufo bufo and Ichthyosaura alpestris Seite 3 von 19 At the Lech river we came across this Astacus astacus At a lake shore we managed to get this in situ shot of Vipera berus Note: also reptiles (Lacerta agilis) are bothered by moscitos! Seite 4 von 19 At the lake we noticed a big population of Natrix natrix – also some black specimen. Bombina variegata 05.07.: Another trip with Jürgen – this time near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Despite of the rainy weather we saw Vipera berus, Natrix natrix and Zootoca vivipara. Back at Oberstdorf, we had a photo session with some orchids. Seite 5 von 19 Vipera berus – in situ, again! Leucorrhinia dubia Cephalanthera rubra Seite 6 von 19 Gymnadenia odoratissima Epipactis atrorubens 06.07.: After several hours of rain we were able to get some pictures at the Fellhorn in the afternoon. Seite 7 von 19 Traunsteinera globosa Some brave Zootoca vivipara at 1700 m altitude 07.07.: Leaving Oberstdorf towards the Julian Alps and arrival at Tarvisio. This Italian town is inhabited by wall lizards! Seite 8 von 19 Podarcis muralis maculiventris 08.07.: At hot temperatures we had a hike at the Kanin mountain – searching for Lilium carniolicum. At lower altitudes Lilium martagon can be found… Seite 9 von 19 …at higher altitudes we finally saw Lilium carniolicum Carstic mountain area… …with alpine flowers: Soldanella alpina Seite 10 von 19 09.07.: Still hot temperatures – we started herping at 6 a.m. at the Predil Pass in Slovenia, an Iberolacerta horvathi site. Afterwards, a hike on the Mangart mountain made us sweat. Portrait of Iberolacerta horvathi: This species’ northern distribution limits are the southeastern Alps – that’s the reason why we visited the Julian Alps! View from Mangart to the Slovenian Alps 10.07.: Another hike at Sella Nevea – without anything worth to mention. In the afternoon we relaxed at the Laghi di Fusine, watching some Natrix natrix. Seite 11 von 19 The Lago Superiore in front of the Mangart mountain Natrix natrix gliding in its spa 11.07.: We left Tarvisio for a sidestep to Monfalcone in the south – There, we wanted to visit a lizard site with Algyroides nigropunctatus and Podarcis melisselensis. Seite 12 von 19 Stop over at the river Soca: a small Natrix tessellata 12.07.: That day, temperatures reached 37 ° C. Hence we started herping at 5:30 a.m. – we found several Algyroides nigropunctatus but no Podarcis melisselensis. Carstic area at Monfalcone Seite 13 von 19 Algyroides nigropunctatus 13.07.: Another unsuccessful search for Podarcis melissensis – frustration! Hoping for moderate temperatures we drove back to Tarvisio. In the evening we catched some shots of Zootoca vivipara carniolica, an oviparous subspecies of that lizard. Iphiclides podalirius Seite 14 von 19 Zootoca vivipara carniolica at Fusine 14.07.: Hiking trip at the Altipiano Montasio. Later: herping at Fusine, again. This time we photographed Iberolacerta horvathi. An ant enjoying Gymnadenia rubra Seite 15 von 19 Myriads of Dianthus monspessulanus… …each flower is a small planet with strange inhabitants. Iberolacerta horvathi on Italian territory. Seite 16 von 19 15.07.: We left Tarvisio and went to Carinthia, where we wanted to meet Mario Schweiger, Andre Schmid and Richard & Florian Kopeczky. Goodbye Tarvisio: Podarcis muralis maculiventris 16.07.: Herping with Mario, Andre, Richard and Florian. Soon, Andre found two Vipera ammodytes. Afterwards we visited a Natrix tessellata habitat – not too successful: In the summer sun, the river shores where populated by sunbathing people instead of snakes. At least we noticed numerous wall lizards and some Lacerta viridis. Habitat of Vipera ammodytes and Podarcis muralis Seite 17 von 19 A juvenile Vipera ammodytes The whole crew admiring the Vipera A female Vipera ammodytes Seite 18 von 19 Podarcis muralis muralis in Carinthia: 10 km southwards, at Tarvisio, the subspecies maculiventris occurs. Limenitis Camilla Female Lacerta viridis Seite 19 von 19 17.07.: Common trip with Mario, Andre, Richard, Florian and Christoph Riegler & Gerald Ochsenhofer to an Iberolacerta horvathi habitat. Later on, we had to leave and returned to Germany. Iberolacerta horvathi – this time, an Austrian specimen! The home of European lizards - by Birgit & Peter Oefinger!.

  • JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK 2The Julian Alps
1 JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK www.slovenia.info 2The Julian Alps The Julian Alps are the southeast- ernmost part of the Alpine arc and at the same time the mountain range that marks the border between Slo- venia and Italy. They are usually divided into the East- ern and Western Julian Alps. The East- ern Julian Alps, which make up approx- imately three-quarters of the range and cover an area of 1,542 km2, lie entirely on the Slovenian side of the border and are the largest and highest Alpine range in Slovenia. The highest peak is Triglav (2,864 metres), but there are more than 150 other peaks over 2,000 metres high. The emerald river Soča rises on one side of the Julian Alps, in the Primorska re- gion; the two headwaters of the river Sava – the Sava Dolinka and the Sava Bohinjka – rise on the other side, in the Gorenjska region. The Julian Alps – the kingdom of Zlatorog According to an ancient legend a white chamois with golden horns lived in the mountains. The people of the area named him Zlatorog, or “Goldhorn”. He guarded the treasures of nature. One day a greedy hunter set off into the mountains and, ignoring the warnings, tracked down Zlatorog and shot him. Blood ran from his wounds Chamois The Triglav rose and fell to the ground. Where it landed, a miraculous plant, the Triglav rose, sprang up. Zlatorog ate the flowers of this plant and its magical healing powers made him invulnerable. At the same time, however, he was saddened by the greed of human beings.

The valleys of the rivers Bela (Fella) and Ziljica (Gailitz), which compose this region, geologically and geomorphologically form a unit with the upper Sava valley: all three rivers take their courses down the former glacier valley which has been chiseled out along the tectonic breach between the Drava group and the southern limestone Alps. All three valleys lie pretty high: the Sava valley reaches at its westernmost point, at the end of the gently doping ascent beginning at Jesenice (578 m) and ending at Rateče, the height of 849 m, and then passes by an imperceptible watershed (859 m) in the valley of the Ziljica (Gailitz) (Bela peč [Fusine in Val- romana] 770 m, Trbiž [Tarvisio] 704 m), which in turn is con nected by the watershed at Zabnica (Camporosso in Valcanale) (817 m) to the valley of the river Bela (Fella), which at the western end of the territory (at Pontabelj [Pontebba Nova]) again descends for about 250 m. In the south the territory is linked across the relatively low Pass of Predil (1156 m) to the upper Soča (Isonzo) valley.

  • Team Leader Manual
TEAM LEADER MANUAL KRANJSKA GORA / SELLA NEVEA 19.01. – 01.02.2019 Dear Team Leader, Welcome to the 2019 World Para Alpine Skiing Championships. Kranjska Gora and Sella Nevea are cities with a long tradition of organising Para alpine skiing competitions and when they join forces we can only expect exciting events. It is the first time two cities host the same edition of the World Championships. Italy hosted the last competition in Tarvisio 2017 and it is great to have Slovenia co-organising the season’s most important event. We expect around 140 athletes from 35 nations to participate in the 2019 World Championships. The competition will start in Kranjska Gora for the other 12 technical events before it moves to Sella Nevea with 18 speed events. In this guide you will find the information you need to know about the competition, the venues, classification, transport, accommodation and all the relevant areas. This is the first major Para alpine skiing competition after the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games where I had the chance to witness extraordinary performances from both experienced and young skiers. I am sure those in Italy and Slovenia will have the same feeling I had in Korea when they watch the best athletes in world in action. I would like to thank both Local Organising Committees for their work supporting World Para Alpine Skiing to deliver the championships. Best of luck to all the competing athletes and teams. Thank you, Andrew Parsons President International Paralympic Committee Dear Team Leader, Welcome to the 2019 World Para Alpine Skiing Championships.
