Caudullo Turkey oak (Quercus cerris L.) is a deciduous tree native to southern Europe and Asia Minor, and a dominant species in the mixed forests of the Mediterranean basin. Turkey oak is a representative of section Cerris, a particular section within the genus Quercus which includes species for which the maturation of acorns occurs in the second year. Quercus cerris L., commonly known as Turkey oak, is a large fast-growing deciduous tree species growing to 40 m tall with 1 Frequency a trunk up to 1.5-2 m diameter , with a well-developed root < 25% system2. It can live for around 120-150 years3. The bark is 25% - 50% 50% - 75% mauve-grey and deeply furrowed with reddish-brown or orange > 75% bark fissures4, 5. Genus Quercus (Fagaceae) has a problematic taxonomy because of widespread hybridization between the infrageneric taxa. The pattern of morphological leaf varia- tion was evaluated for evidence of hybridization in Bolu, Turkey, since previous stud- ies suggested that in oaks leaf morphology is a good indicator of putative hybridiza- tion. Principal components analysis was applied to data sets of leaf characters from fi ve populations to describe variation in leaf morphology. Leaf characters analyzed in this study showed high degrees of variation as a result of hybridization between four taxa (Q. pubescens, Q. virgiliana, Q. petraea and Q. robur) of subgenus Quercus while Q. cerris as a member of subgenus Cerris was clearly separated from the others. The document was drafted in a participatory approach by involving a wide range of stakeholders and is based on the results of two State of Nature Reports (2006 – 2007 and 2008 – 2009) prepared by the Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency (KEPA) and reports from other sectors. The Kosovo Assembly officially approved the NBSAP 2011 – 2020 on 7 October 2011. The implementation of the Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan has to be an iterative and cyclical process, as the status and the trends of biodiversity, the threats to environmental goods and ecosystem services, the economic and social values, as well as the political framework may change during the years. Therefore, there is a need for a review and adjustment of this policy instrument, which is in accordance with Article 141 paragraph 5 of the Nature Protection Law No. -
Tsepelovo (Epirus) with Giorgos Kapsalis
Seminar of Greek Dance with Giorgos Kapsalis and Dina Koukoufiki Epirus -Tsepelovo - Zagorochoria, 22 July – 30 July 2019 Giorgos Kapsalis and Dina Koukoufiki are organising a traditional dance workshop, which will take place in Epirus, in the village of Tsepelovo, Zagorochoria. The workshop begins on 22th July and ends on 30st July right after breakfast. Tsepelovo is one of the villages in the famous Zagori and it is located in Epirus, in the prefecture of Ioannina. Majestic canyons, stone stairs, unique bridges and endless peaks compose the image that the visitor confronts in this area. Forty-six scattered villages, like eagle's nests, spread among the mountains of Timfi, Mitsikeli and Lygkos. The seminar will be a small trip for all of us, to the special region of Epirus, with its wonderful music and songs, with its simple and strange dances. During the workshop, songs, customs and traditions will be taught mainly from different villages of the region of Epirus. There will be daily dance teaching, songs learning and traditional costumes presentation by the corresponding introducer of each region. Furthermore, we are going to have the opportunity to visit corresponding villages, to participate in feasts with the residents of the villages and to taste their local foods. In addition, during the seminar will be taught dances and songs from regions of Greece. We will be accommodated at the hotel Drakolimni www.drakolimni.com which is built with local carved stone and all its spaces have been decorated according to the traditional Zagorian architecture. Every evening, feasts will be held at the hotel or the squares of several villages. -

This project is dedicated to foster rural development in mountainous regions through the construction of Signs of quality and origin (SIQO). One of its main outputs was to shed the light on the pastoral and localized livestock systems in Albania and in Balkans’ surrounding countries, as a central issue for biodiversity conservation through the maintenance of High Nature Value farming systems. They are an important component of European agriculture not only for the conservation of biodiversity, but also for cultural heritage, quality products, and rural employment. The core experience of this project was (and still is) the creation of a Protected Geographical Indication on the “Hasi goat kid meat” based on stakeholders collective action and knowledge brokering. During that learning process and to effectively enforce the relation between rural development and biodiversity conservation, we used an original Ecological and Pastoral diagnosis method, imported from an EU Life+ program (Mil’Ouv, 2013-2017). This method seeks to improve pastoral resources management in a way that is both environmentally sustainable and efficient from an economic perspective. -

Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, POB 12, Rehovot 76100, Israel Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) of four species of oaks (Fagaceae: Quercus) in Israel namely, Q. boissieri, Q. calliprinos, Q. ithaburensis, and Q. look were collected and identified from natural forest stands during the period 2010-2013. A total of twenty-seven species were determined from nine scale insect families: Asterolecaniidae (3 species), Coccidae (3), Di- aspididae (7), Eriococcidae (3), Kermesidae (6), Kuwaniidae (1), Mono- phlebidae (1), Pseudococcidae (2), and Putoidae (1). Six of these species represent new records for Israel and five are identified to the genus level. Kuwaniidae is a new family record for Israel. Species that were previously collected or recorded on oaks in Israel are listed and discussed. Information is given about host trees and global distribution. The majority of the spe- cies reported here are monophagous or stenophagous and they appear to be non-pestiferous to the oak trees in Israel. General traits that describe each scale insect family in the field are provided, together with an identification key to aid in the determination of slide-mounted specimens into families represented in this study. The aim of this dissertation is to collect as much information as possible on agricultural practices in Macedonia from prehistory to Roman times and examine them within their social and cultural context. Chapter 1 will offer a general introduction to the aims and methodology of this thesis. This chapter will also provide information on the geography, climate and natural resources of ancient Macedonia from prehistoric times. We will them continue with a concise social and cultural history of Macedonia from prehistory to the Roman conquest. This is important in order to achieve a good understanding of all these social and cultural processes that are directly or indirectly related with the exploitation of land and agriculture in Macedonia through time. The only exception is the Eurasian Sect. Cerris that comprises 15 species, a dozen of which are confined to western Eurasia. This section has not been comprehensively studied using molecular tools. Here, we assess species diversity and reconstruct a first comprehensive taxonomic scheme of western Eurasian members of Sect. Cerris using plastid (trnH-psbA) and nuclear (5S-IGS) DNA variation with a dense intra-specific and geographic sampling.
