Porsche at Le Mans Meet the Heroes of Le Mans • Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1 Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche in the starting line-up for 63 years The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most famous endurance race in the world. The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place. -

It was originally badged as the 901 and had a 128hp, 1991cc flat 6 engine in boxer configuration, which was air cooled and rear mounted and mated to a five speed manual transmission. Lì potevano ammirare un nuovo modello super ribassato ed estremamente dinamico che dimostrava chiaramente già dal primo sguardo di essere la più veloce auto sportiva stradale tedesca: la BMW M1, alta 1.140 mm, potente (277 CV) e veloce (ben oltre i 260 km/h). “Tutti sono corsi intorno alla nuova auto sportiva della BMW con motore centrale – scriveva la stampa – e l’elenco degli ordini in arrivo supera le più rosee aspettative. Per esempio, un appassionato americano di BMW ne ha già ordinati tre esemplari”. Era qualcosa di impressionante, considerando che, nel 1978, la super sportiva BMW aveva un prezzo di esattamente 100.000 marchi, abbastanza per acquistare quattro BMW 323is più un paio di optional extra. Sarebbe giusto dire che poche automobili erano attese con tanto entusiasmo ed aspettativa come la BMW M1, che rappresentava tutto il know-how della casa di Monaco in termini di sport motoristico. Porsche is expanding its successful and sustainable youth development program in international motorsport. In 2018, four Young Professionals will be sponsored on the international GT racing scene. Two Porsche Juniors will receive training to become a professional racing driver in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, which features on the same event weekends as Formula 1. Published: 11th December 2020 By: John Starkey Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/the-fastest-935-of-them-all/ Porsche 935 JLP-4 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2014 JLP-4 was the final race car in the line of Porsche 935 specials built for the John Paul father and son team. Using this final ‘weapon’, the Pauls notched up several outright victories in IMSA races and, in combination with JLP-3, John Paul Jr won the 1982 IMSA Camel Driver’s Championship. JLP-4 was the only Porsche 935 with full ground effects, and it proved to be four seconds a lap faster than JLP-3, which itself was one very fast 935. Designed by Lee Dykstra and built www.porscheroadandrace.com by Dave Klym, JLP-4 featured a front suspension design with a rocker arm/inboard dampers/coil spring set-up. The car had full length ground-effect Venturis and right hand drive, to put the driver on the inside of most corners of a race course. This was the most radical design of all the 935s. G.I. Joe’s Toyota Grand Prix Portland, 1 August 1982: The #18 Porsche 935 JLP-4 driven by John Paul Jr started from pole position and he ran out the winner of this race. Rounding the corner alongside is John Fitzpatrick in the #2 JDavid Porsche 935 K4, who posted a DNF Appearing first of all at Brainerd Raceway on 11 July 1982, John Paul Jr forsook his baby blue Lola T600 GT Prototype and scored a runaway straight-out-of-the-box victory there with JLP-4. -

The ‚DRM’ (=Deutsche Rennsport-Meisterschaft) was the most important German racing series from 1972 to 1985, which got designed to establish a title with international meaning and relevance. 14 years of touring- and sports car racing of the highest level that motorsports can offer. Classic touring cars and GT were the start: The main features of the sports gear were stripped out, lightened car bodies, performance-enhanced engines and improved suspensions, transmissions and brakes. Stronger, lighter, faster - the tubular frame designs of Group 5 coupled with the turbo age are what subsequently gave the DRM probably the best and most spectacular races. Group C ultimately heralded the end: fascinating, thoroughbred racing cars, but simply too expensive for a national championship to offer the series a future. Teams APR Motorsport and Oryx Racing are each fielding one of the newly developed customer sport race cars in the GT class of the endurance classic. The “Rolex 24 at Daytona” ranks among the finest classics in international motorsport. The event has been thrilling the sports car fan community since 1962. Some of the greatest racers in history have entered their names on the winners’ list – from Jacky Ickx and Hans Herrmann through to Hurley Haywood, A. J. Foyt or Derek Bell. Reinhold Joest, the founder of Audi Sport Team Joest has personally won this classic race in Florida too. Current Audi factory driver Mike Rockenfeller decided the competition in his favor with an American team two years ago. On the event’s 50th anniversary the organizer is treating the audience to an unusual and spectacular experience. A champions party with numerous racing legends, an exhibition of historic overall-winning cars, a carnival complete with a Ferris Wheel, a 5-kilometer run on the track for all sports enthusiasts on Saturday before the race, autograph sessions and pit walks are just some of the attractions featured on the last weekend in January. -

I acknowledge that this is an extremely simplistic view to take, and there will be those who point to their favourite form of the sport such as rallying, hill climbing, prototypes etc, this list goes on. And while Group C gave us one of the most enjoyable and closely fought eras of motorsport in modern times, GT racing all but ground to a halt in the final years of the Group C decade. In fact, once the Group C cars had left the scene after the 1992 season, there was a huge vacuum in European motorsport.
