Fin da piccola ho quindi frequentato ArteStudio Morandi cercando di capire gli strani avvenimenti che vi avevano luogo e ai quali assistevo, si tratta di una galleria d’arte sperimentale che anche ad un adulto che non conosce l’arte contemporanea e che non vi è affine, può apparire al limite dello stravagante, ovviamente non avevo modo di capire, ma ero affascinata da quello che aveva luogo negli spazi della galleria, così continuai a frequentare quel posto negli anni, in maniera di volta in volta diversa e sempre più matura. A luglio, dopo aver finito gli esami e dovendo ancora svolgere il tirocinio formativo, decisi di chiedere a Emilio Morandi e Franca Monzani, ai quali già mi ero appoggiata per le ricerche di tesi triennale, se avessero avuto piacere ad avere qualcuno presso la loro galleria in aiuto a tutte le normali attività di organizzazione di eventi, curatela di esposizioni e gestione dell’archivio. Così abbiamo iniziato la digitalizzazione dell’archivio che fino a quel momento risultava completamente ed esclusivamente cartaceo, ma di grandissimo valore, dunque, di grande importanza nella sua conservazione per studi futuri. Strano pensare che da un piccolo paesino della Val Seriana in provincia di Bergamo, siano passati artisti conosciuti a livello internazionale che hanno esposto nei più grandi !1 musei del mondo, ma è proprio così, e lo scoprii proprio stando fra i documenti dell’archivio. Emilio Morandi è un mailartista che ha iniziato il suo percorso con la pittura, ampliando le proprie sperimentazioni verso la performance, la poesia visiva, l’arte postale, e che ha aperto un piccolo spazio (che ora si è già ingrandito notevolmente) nel quale vengono organizzati eventi e mostre di ogni genere. Ma la Mail Art è il tramite di tutto, è la forma d’arte e il metodo di comunicazione, è stata il tramite per instaurare legami in tutto il mondo, che hanno dato vita ad amicizie e mostre itineranti, dunque, senza bisogno di grandi sovvenzioni, l’artista bergamasco, insieme alla moglie, ha viaggiato in tutto il mondo incontrando gli artisti con cui corrispondeva, che gli offrivano ospitalità in cambio di una esposizione, e poi il favore veniva ritornato. Ogni artista, con le proprie possibilità, è al servizio dell’altro artista, il tutto moltiplicato per ogni mailartista, consiste nell’essenza del funzionamento del fenomeno. Egli ha probabilmente capito fin dall’inizio l’enorme valore di questo movimento ancora non storicizzato, decidendo di conservare tutto il materiale relativo alle proprie opere di corrispondenza in cartelle cartacee dedicate ai diversi artisti e gruppi, così l’estate passata, smistando questi materiali per fotografarli e raccoglierli digitalmente, ho iniziato a comprendere che il mondo della Mail Art che avevo sempre e solo visto come modalità di corrispondenza creativa, ma fine a se stessa, è in realtà una immensa rete di connessioni in cui ogni legame che si viene a creare a sua volta vede interconnessioni, così, a distanza di chilometri e chilometri, si creano non solo amicizie a due, ma veri e propri gruppi di conoscenti che possono dialogare di argomenti comuni non solo in un rapporto uno ad uno, ma appunto collettivo. E non solo si tratta di posta, ma anche di musica, di fotografia, di viaggi veri e propri fatti per andare ad incontrare l’altro, !2 performance ed esibizioni itineranti portate avanti personalmente in una maniera che può in un qualche modo apparire ‘antica’, ma che risulta solida per la salda e profonda tipologia di conoscenze che si instaurano all’interno di essa, che hanno alla base un uguale modo di guardare alla vita ed affrontarla. Ho iniziato quindi a pensare di svolgere la mia tesi proprio sulla Mail Art, questo argomento che un pò per caso, ed un pò per geografia, è entrato a far parte della mia vita; ad ogni modo, caso e geografia sono a loro volta componenti fondanti di questa disciplina, quindi risultano due aspetti fondamentali del fenomeno mailartistico, ma questo lo vedremo meglio nelle prossime pagine. Il titolo scelto per il mio elaborato è in un certo senso una ripetizione: prima di tutto il nome con cui è identificata questa forma d’arte a livello mondiale, Mail Art, in secondo luogo il fattore virtuale di questa forma d’arte che connette persone a distanza che si conoscono non in maniera fisica ma attraverso le proprie idee ed i propri pensieri, portando alla nascita di una rete che rivela infine un Eternal Network, ed infine la denominazione più semplice e chiara, soprattutto per noi italiani, anche se, la meno usata negli studi, Arte Postale, che rivela la semplicità delle sue componenti, essenzialmente e concretamente arte e posta. Una ripetizione di uno stesso significato che dimostra come però questo fenomeno contenga al suo interno sfumature diverse che oscillano fra il concreto e il virtuale, che ora si avvicinano alla carta e ora si avvicinano alla tecnologia in una continua mutazione. La mia ricerca è stata possibile grazie alla meticolosa conservazione di materiali da parte dei numerosi mailartisti sparsi in giro per il mondo che rendono disponibile in maniera gratuita e facile il materiale raccolto sui propri siti web, così come gli archivi che mi hanno aperto le porte dei propri spazi di ricerca e conservazione con entusiasmo, riempiendomi di libri, materiali e racconti che mi hanno !3 lasciato la possibilità di scegliere e smistare materiale in abbondanza e libertà. Purtroppo non ci sono solo note positive perché gli archivi di Mail Art, e in questo senso mi riferisco agli spazi più piccoli, indipendenti e meno conosciuti, necessiterebbero dell’interesse di istituzioni, poiché si tratta di artisti che si improvvisano chi più e chi meno con le proprie possibilità ed energie nella conservazione di un patrimonio del quale loro stessi sono i creatori, ma che non è facile da gestire al meglio. Infine, concludo dicendo che ci sono alcuni mailartisti italiani che hanno scritto numerosi testi sulla Mail Art, ma al di fuori di questo l’argomento risulta poco studiato nel nostro paese, così come poco studiato anche negli ambienti accademici più rivolti al contemporaneo, quindi mi auguro di suscitare curiosità ed interesse e che lo studio di questa disciplina venga non solo approfondito anche nelle nostre università, ma diffuso proprio come modalità creativa all’interno delle scuole e delle Accademie, riportando alla luce la bellezza di dar vita a oggetti creati con le proprie mani che hanno lo scopo di far circolare in giro per il mondo le proprie idee, le proprie storie, le proprie esperienze, e più in generale la cultura senza alcun tipo di barriera. !4 Non vi è alcun metodo più sicuro per evadere dal mondo che seguendo l’arte, e nessun metodo più sicuro di unirsi al mondo che tramite l’arte. In the fall of 1936, Burgoyne Diller (American, 1906 - 1965), the head of the Mural Division and a painter in his own right, convinced the New York Housing Authority to commission artists to decorate some basement social rooms in the Williamsburg Houses, a massive, new public housing project in Brooklyn. A dozen artists were chosen to submit work, and, while Davis’s painting was never installed, it turned out to be a watershed in his development.

Washburn Gallery to Relocate to Chelsea, Opening Their First Exhibition on September 14 NEW YORK, July 7, 2017–After 25 years at 20 West 57th Street, Washburn Gallery will relocate to 177 Tenth Avenue between 20th and 21st in the Chelsea gallery district. For over forty years, the Washburn Gallery has organized carefully selected exhibitions of works by major 19th and 20th century American artists. Since opening in 1971, the gallery has had an active, innovative schedule of exhibitions focusing on the Stieglitz Group; American Abstract Artists of the 1930s and 1940s; the Abstract Expressionists and contemporary artists. The first exhibition to inaugurate the gallery’s new Chelsea space will be ‘The WPA’ (subtitle “Save the NEA”) opening September 14th – October 28, 2017. The Federal Art Project, a New Deal program, of the Works Progress Administration employed more than five thousand American artists between 1935 and 1943. A significant number of these artists later achieved international renown as Abstract Expressionists in the post World War II era. This exhibition brings together works by several of these artists including Philip Guston, Stuart Davis, and Jackson Pollock who were commissioned early in their careers to create public murals. The gallery will also exhibit Ilya Bolotowsky’s re-creation of the mural commissioned for the Williamsburg Housing Project, 1936.
