Clark Fund) 2014.79.15 ENTRY Swing Landscape [fig. 1] was the first of two commissions that Stuart Davis received from the Mural Division of the Federal Art Project (FAP), an agency of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), to make large-scale paintings for specific sites in New York. The other was Mural for Studio B, WNYC, Municipal Broadcasting Company [fig. 2]. [1] The 1930s were a great era of mural painting in the United States, and Davis, along with such artists as Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889 - 1975), Arshile Gorky (American, born Armenia, c. 1902 - 1948), and Philip Guston (American, born Canada, 1913 - 1980), was an important participant. In the fall of 1936, Burgoyne Diller (American, 1906 - 1965), the head of the Mural Division and a painter in his own right, convinced the New York Housing Authority to commission artists to decorate some basement social rooms in the Williamsburg Houses, a massive, new public housing project in Brooklyn. A dozen artists were chosen to submit work, and, while Davis’s painting was never installed, it turned out to be a watershed in his development. -

Alex Prager: Farewell, Work Holiday Parties November 21, 2020–January 3, 2021 Los Angeles–based artist Alex Prager is known for making photographs and short films embellished with Technicolor fantasy but grounded in the pains and pleasures of the everyday. In this installation, Prager satirizes a specific part of working life, drawing on pop culture tropes to create a simulation of office holiday parties. The artist animates figurative sculptures with costumes, makeup, props, and sound, and places them in recognizable office-party situations, creating a strange yet celebratory scene that can be experienced in the round. “Through my work I’ve been able to process things in the world that I’m questioning or struggling with,” says Prager, “which is one of the many reasons I feel this piece is important for the current social climate. North Carolina Botanical Garden – Strategic Plan – 2010-2012 1 North Carolina Botanical Garden Strategic Plan 2010-2012 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill I. Introduction The North Carolina Botanical Garden’s first strategic plan (2005-2007) was the result of a series of planning sessions, focus groups, and discussions facilitated by Richard Daley of EMD Consulting Group, LLC. Much has changed since that planning period: a new 31,000 sq ft building, the Education Center, which began construction in November 2007, opened in the fall of 2009. This project also reconfigured circulation, parking, and outdoor garden spaces and closed the segment of Laurel Hill Road that long separated our display collections from visitor parking. The roadbed has been replaced with parking, paths, and beds for new gardens. The 2010-2012 Strategic Plan will guide the first years of operation of the new facilities and gardens. The next projects in our long-term development plan include the planting of new garden collections around the Education Center, a facility to house the UNC Herbarium, the renovation of the Totten Center as a base for our horticultural department, the upgrading of the Forest Theatre to facilitate its use in performing arts, continued work to assure the conservation of the lands we manage, and continued work to secure the conservation of lands adjacent to our natural areas. One thing I know is art and the art market has literally been around forever and has weathered centuries of wars, economic crashes and many other global disasters and will continue to prevail perhaps in new ways to which it will need to reinvent itself. I believe a correction is taking place as has happened in every market throughout history when strained by historic events. The brick & mortar gallery model is becoming a thing of the past and the existence of art fairs in the near future is questionable regarding the current health situations for the dealers and the collectors who attend. I believe that a large group of galleries are going to close as their business models aren’t strong enough to survive these extreme times. -
Tips for New Faculty
Tips for New Faculty Charles Kuralt provided a sense of the Carolina aura when he said: What is it that binds us to this place as to no other? It is not the well or the bell or the stone walls. Or the crisp October nights or the memory of dogwoods blooming. Our loyalty is not only to William Richardson Davie, though we are proud of what he did 200 years ago today. Nor even to Dean Smith, though we are proud of what he did last March. No, our love for this place is based on the fact that it is, as it was meant to be, the University of the people. UNC Bicentennial, 1993 While Kuralt was speaking about UNC’s relationship to the people of North Carolina, his words also hold true for the people who make up the campus community in relation to one another. People on this campus care about one another, their departments and schools, the campus as a whole. Students matter. Colleagues matter. As a faculty member new to Carolina, you matter. When current faculty members were asked what advice they would give faculty new to Carolina, they were quick to respond and eloquent in their responses. This essay brings together their ideas, addressing key areas of faculty life. As the tips were received, they were categorized into the following areas, teaching, research, mentoring/ relationships/connections, becoming part of the community, and balancing competing demands. Teaching A significant part of most new faculty members’ time will be spent in the classroom. Teaching is an important part of the mission of UNC and provides students the opportunity to interact with and learn from some of the top scholars in the world.
