  • Introducing New Surflight Theatre
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Surflight Theatre Press Director Charlie Siedenburg, 551-655-0968 BROADWAY PRODUCER ROY MILLER NAMED SURFLIGHT THEATRE PRODUCER Broadway producer (and Surflight alum) joins notable New Jersey summer destination – Surflight Theatre during exciting transitional period. BEACH HAVEN, NJ, Tuesday, September 21, 2010 — Surflight Theatre Board President Gene Hammond announced today that Broadway producer (and Surflight alum) Roy Miller has been appointed to the leadership position of Producer at Surflight Theatre. A New Jersey native, Miller’s Broadway producing credits include the current revival of West Side Story (Tony nomination for Best Musical Revival and Grammy Award Winner for Best Musical Show Album), The Drowsy Chaperone (winner of five 2006 Tony Awards; Drama Desk and NY Drama Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Musical), and The Pee-wee Herman Show (opening October 26). Before crossing the river to New York, Miller was Associate Producer of the acclaimed Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ, from 1991 to 2004 where he produced over eighty musicals and plays including Animal Crackers starring Kristin Chenoweth, Follies starring Ann Miller, Gypsy starring Betty Buckley and Deborah Gibson, and Stephen Schwartz’s new musical Children of Eden . Miller may be new to the leadership of Surflight, but he is no stranger to the Beach Haven theatre's 450- seat venue. While performing in a high school production of Funny Girl in his hometown of Irvington, NJ, Miller was offered an apprenticeship at Surflight by the show’s director and Surflight founder Joseph P. Hayes. That first introduction to summer theatre at the Jersey Shore in 1975 was followed by two subsequent seasons as an apprentice and, eventually, as a member of the acting company in 1978.

Alex Prager: Farewell, Work Holiday Parties November 21, 2020–January 3, 2021 Los Angeles–based artist Alex Prager is known for making photographs and short films embellished with Technicolor fantasy but grounded in the pains and pleasures of the everyday. In this installation, Prager satirizes a specific part of working life, drawing on pop culture tropes to create a simulation of office holiday parties. The artist animates figurative sculptures with costumes, makeup, props, and sound, and places them in recognizable office-party situations, creating a strange yet celebratory scene that can be experienced in the round. “Through my work I’ve been able to process things in the world that I’m questioning or struggling with,” says Prager, “which is one of the many reasons I feel this piece is important for the current social climate. Right now, during this strange and life-altering time, many of us are reprioritizing our lives and figuring out what actually matters to us.” Curators: Liz Andrews, Director’s Office and Rita Gonzalez, Contemporary Art, LACMA Credit: This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

  • “TERRIFICALLY ENGAGING.” – Variety
“TERRIFICALLY ENGAGING.” – Variety “BOBCAT GOLDTHWAIT’S MASTERPIECE. A TRULY BEAUTIFUL HUMAN DOCUMENT.” – Drew McWeeny, Hitfix 2015 CALL ME LUCKY a film by Bobcat Goldthwait CALL ME LUCKY is an inspiring, triumphant and wickedly funny documentary with a compelling and controversial hero at its heart. Barry Crimmins, best known as a comedian and political satirist, bravely tells his incredible story of transformation with intimate interviews from comedians such as David Cross, Margaret Cho and Patton Oswalt, activists such as Billy Bragg and Cindy Sheehan and directed in inimitable style by Bobcat Goldthwait (World’s Greatest Dad/God Bless America/Willow Creek). As a young and hungry comic in the early 80’s Barry Crimmins founded his own comedy club in Boston, in a Chinese restaurant called the Ding Ho. Here he fostered the careers of new talent who we now know as Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, Denis Leary, Lenny Clarke, Kevin Meaney, Bobcat Goldthwait, Tom Kenny and many others. These comics were grateful for Barry’s fair pay and passionate support and respected him as a whip-smart comic himself but, as becomes clear in their interviews, they also knew he was tortured by his past. As archive footage of Barry shows, he was thickly mustachioed, thick set and thinly disguising an undercurrent of rage beneath his beer swilling onstage act. It seemed Barry was the fierce defender of the little guy but also an angry force when confronted. As one of the top new comedians in the country he appeared on The HBO Young Comedians Special, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Evening at the Improv and many other television shows in the 80’s.

  • Are They Family?: Queer Parents and Queer Pasts In
ARE THEY FAMILY?: QUEER PARENTS AND QUEER PASTS IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN CULTURE BY MICHAEL SHETINA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Siobhan Somerville, Chair Professor Chantal Nadeau Associate Professor Julie Turnock Associate Professor Richard T. Rodríguez, University of California, Riverside ABSTRACT The early twenty-first century saw a marked increase in depictions of LGBTQ people and communities in American popular culture occurring alongside political activism that culminated in the repeal of the Pentagon's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy (2010) and the Supreme Court's overturning of same-sex marriage bans in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015). Even as these events fueled a triumphant progressive narrative in which social and political representation moved LGBTQ people into a better future, a significant strain of LGBTQ-focused popular culture drew its attention to the past. My dissertation, Are They Family?: Queer Parents and Queer Pasts in Popular Culture, examines how American film, television, and literature between 2005 and 2016 construct relationships among LGBTQ people across recent history in generational and familial terms. These works queer the concept of the family by deploying parents and parental figures to examine the role of families in the transmission of queer knowledges, practices, and identities, countering notions of families as mere precursors to queer identity—“families of origin”—or as the agential creations of out LGBTQ people—“families of choice.” These works demonstrate how such dichotomous conceptions of family limit the people, experiences, and forms of affect that are legible within the category of LGBTQ history.

67 YEARS OF EMMY® 1948 The Emmy Awards are conceived. The Television Academy’s founding fathers struggle to name the award: Television Academy founder Syd Cassyd suggests “Ike,” the nickname for the television iconoscope tube. Pioneer television engineer and future (1949) Academy president Harry Lubcke suggests “Immy,” a nickname for the image-orthicon camera tube instrumental in the technical development of television. “Immy” is feminized as “Emmy” because the statuette, designed by engineer Louis McManus (who enlisted his wife Dorothy to model for it) depicts the winged “muse of art uplifting the electron of science.” 1949 First Emmy Awards – given to Los Angeles area programming – take place at the Hollywood Athletic Club on January 25. Tickets are $5.00. It is broadcast on local station KTSL. There are less than a million television sets in the U.S. The master of ceremonies was popular TV host Walter O’Keefe. Six awards are given: Most Outstanding Television Personality: Twenty-year-old Shirley Dinsdale and her puppet sidekick Judy Splinters for “The Judy Splinters Show.” The Station Award for Outstanding Overall Achievement: KTLA (the first commercial television station west of the Mississippi River). Technical Award: Engineer Charles Mesak of Don Lee Television for the introduction of TV camera technology. The Best Film Made for Television: “The Necklace” (a half hour adaptation of Guy de Maupassant's classic short story).
