This article traces the changes in Japanese mapping of overseas areas to the end of World War II and assesses the significance of the resulting maps, called gaihōzu, as sources for East Asian history. As implements of military operation and colonial administration, the gaihōzu were produced during a protracted period by various means under changing circumstances. Expanding military activity also promoted differentiation among the gaihōzu by increasing the use of maps originally produced in foreign countries. In conclusion, the need for detailed cataloging, in combination with chronologically arranged index mapping, is emphasized for the systematic use of the gaihōzu. Introduction The study of cartography in imperial and colonial expansion is one of the most important subjects today for scholars who are interested in the intersection of modern history and the history of cartography. For modern states, maps have been fundamental tools, serving multiple purposes in construction projects, public administration, land registration, and military operations. Likewise, maps were also important instruments for the exploration and administration of overseas areas that were incorporated into these modern states.

    Origins of nature tourism in imperial China Libo Yan Abstract Libo Yan is based at the Faculty Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to apply what can be learned from the emergence of nature tourism of Hospitality and Tourism to understand some current and future trends of tourism. Management, Macau Design/methodology/approach – This study adopted the evolutionary paradigm for investigation. University of Science and Findings – The emergence of nature tourism in early medieval China can be attributed to four major factors, Technology, Macau, China. including transformation of value orientations, seeking longevity, interest in suburbs and population migration. Research limitations/implications – Historical studies help understand the current and future trends. When the contributing factors for nature tourism are linked to the contemporary world, it can be found that these factors are still playing a part in shaping tourism trends or patterns in their original or alternative forms. These trends or patterns are worthy of scholarly investigations. Originality/value – This paper offers a comprehensive understanding of the origins of nature tourism. Given that Christianity is largely expressed in visible, worship-based ways, such as music (songs), rhetoric (sermons), rituals (sacraments), symbols (crosses, garments, banners, etc.), posture and gesture (genuflecting, lifting hands, etc.), one wonders at the implication of this development. Might there be an alternative approach to sinicization? This essay seeks to investigate the feasibility of sinicized Christianity from the ontology of musicking as purveyed through the practice of congregational song. There are two important regional works in the Tang Dynasty. As an important subject of Fu literature, it has a close relationship with the flourishing period of the Wei, Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties. Both have a common origin, but also has a different development track; both self-contained, but also mutual influence. The artistic nature of the city and the nature of the material are permeated with each other, and the development and new changes are promoted. Introduction Duyi Fu, including Jingdu Fu and Yi Ju Fu, began in the Western Han Dynasty, to Yang Xiong "Shu Du Fu" as the earliest. Xiao Tong "anthology" received more than 90 articles, divided into 15 categories, the first category of "Kyoto", income 8; Li Fang and others compiled "Wen Yuan Yinghua" sub-43, "Kyoto" Yi "in the head; Chen Yuan-long series of" calendar Fu "column" city "head, a total of 10 volumes of 70 articles. Duyi Fu mainly revolves around the geography, politics, culture and social life of the metropolis,used for singing praises of the emperor and boast of their homelands, with obvious geographical characteristics. This article explores the changing historical referents that Qing officials used in arguing for the extension of direct governance to the empire’s frontier regions from the sto the s. In the s, Shen Baozhen and Zuo Zongtang made the case for a change of governance on Taiwan and in Xinjiang respectively by reference to past Chinese frontier management. However, in the first decade of the twentieth century Cen Chunxuan and Yao Xiguang both referred to the European past, and specifically the history of European colonialism, to argue for reform of frontier policy in Mongolia. I argue that this shift was a result of both the empire’s altered political circum- stances and a growing belief in the inevitability of an evolutionary fate which awaited nomadic peoples, who were destined to be colonized. Yet this was not a case of Chinese thinkers simply adopting European ideas and perspectives wholesale. The adoption of European historical referents was entangled with Han Chinese perceptions of Mongolian populations which had been carefully culti- vated by the Manchu Qing state.

But it is equally true of texts that make sense fairly readily: we understand them well enough, but in order to make good use of them we must understand them a bit better than that. Getting to this higher level of interpretation requires the invocation of other, related texts and the development of the ‘context’ in which the text’s utterances were made. The most crucial step, however, is to situate the text within some explanatory framework, exploring how it unfolds within such a system. The present study examines a set of texts – the extant biographical material on the poet Zuo Si 左思 (fl. late 3rd c.) – and through this case aims to evaluate the genre of biographical writing in early medieval China. Early medieval biographies are not, in the main, hard to read, and it is often possible to advance our understanding of them by associating them with other texts and by weaving in the proper historical context, in line with the first two senses outlined above. But the third facet of interpretation – the explanatory domain – presents much difficulty, ample existing assessments of the Chinese historiographical tradition notwithstanding.1 What strategies do we have for reading biographical texts? This article explores the changing historical referents that Qing officials used in arguing for the extension of direct governance to the empire’s frontier regions from the sto the s. In the s, Shen Baozhen and Zuo Zongtang made the case for a change of governance on Taiwan and in Xinjiang respectively by reference to past Chinese frontier management. However, in the first decade of the twentieth century Cen Chunxuan and Yao Xiguang both referred to the European past, and specifically the history of European colonialism, to argue for reform of frontier policy in Mongolia. I argue that this shift was a result of both the empire’s altered political circum- stances and a growing belief in the inevitability of an evolutionary fate which awaited nomadic peoples, who were destined to be colonized. Yet this was not a case of Chinese thinkers simply adopting European ideas and perspectives wholesale. The adoption of European historical referents was entangled with Han Chinese perceptions of Mongolian populations which had been carefully culti- vated by the Manchu Qing state.
