  • The Engine of the Republic: the Presidential Cars PRESENTATION
The Engine of the Republic: The Presidential Cars PRESENTATION The museum collection The Engine of the Republic – The Presidential Cars came about as a result of a challenge issued by the Museum of Transport and Communications to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The challenge, which was immediately accepted, was to create a permanent exhibit that would make it possible for the public to visit, assembled and preserved, one of the most important collections of cars in the country: those that have been in the service of its presidents since the founding of the Republic, over 100 years ago. This collection also reflects an awareness that the vehicles exhibited here are part of a historical heritage. As such, they are no longer disposed of once decommissioned, but become part of the collection of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The job of recording, locating and recovering the cars that were used by the presidents of the Republic, an ongoing task, has been a priority of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic practically since its inception, as already demonstrated by a group of temporary exhibitions: beginning in 2004, to coincide with the opening of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic, and continuing over the course of subsequent years, in Porto, Lisbon, Figueira da Foz and Guimarães. Siting this collection in Porto also contributes to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic’s aim of decentralising its activity, bringing part of its collection to the north of the country, a region with a great tradition of car collecting.

  • Forming Christians Through Musicking in China
religions Article Forming Christians through Musicking in China Swee Hong Lim Emmanuel College, University of Toronto, 75 Queen’s Park Crescent, Toronto, ON M5S 1K7, Canada; [email protected] Academic Editor: Mark G. Toulouse Received: 4 January 2017; Accepted: 21 March 2017; Published: 31 March 2017 Abstract: In recent years, authorities in mainland China have renewed their call for the sinicization of Christianity through theological discourse. Given that Christianity is largely expressed in visible, worship-based ways, such as music (songs), rhetoric (sermons), rituals (sacraments), symbols (crosses, garments, banners, etc.), posture and gesture (genuflecting, lifting hands, etc.), one wonders at the implication of this development. Might there be an alternative approach to sinicization? This essay seeks to investigate the feasibility of sinicized Christianity from the ontology of musicking as purveyed through the practice of congregational song. Keywords: China; Asian; theology; worship; musicking; ideoscape; mediascape; congregational song; sinicization; contextualization Christianity now makes up the largest single civil society grouping in China. The party sees that. Terence Halliday Co-director, Center for Law and Globalization at the American Bar Foundation [1] Since the mid-20th century, Christianity in China has strived to be self-sustaining. Like other Asian Christianities, this shift is visible in its governance, financing, and ministry. For the Three-Self Patriotic Movement of the Protestant Church in China (TSPM), the government-sanctioned national church in the land, this aspiration is enshrined in its three-fold principle of self-government, self-support, and self-propagation. In recent years, mainland Chinese authorities have renewed the call for the sinicization of Christianity with greater urgency.

NATIONAL PALACE OF BELÉM Classified as a national monument in 2007, Belém Palace became the seat of the presidency after 1910. With a history spanning more than five centuries, Belém Palace has served as the official residence of the President of the Republic since the election of the first President, Manuel de Arriaga. In the mid-sixteenth century, D. Manuel of Portugal, a figure of the Portuguese Renaissance, constructed the main building of the palace on land leased to monks from the Order of St. Jerome. In 1726, the property was acquired by King João V to serve as his holiday residence and remained in the royal family's possession until 1908. From then on, guardianship was entrusted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which used Belém Palace to host visiting foreign officials until the foundation of the Republic in 1910. INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that die photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

  • Re-Envisioning Christianity's Cultural Engagement
QUEST: Studies on Religion & Culture in Asia, Vol. 5, 2021 RE-ENVISIONING CHRISTIANITY’S CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT STRATEGIES A PROPOSAL FOR A TOP-DOWN, BOTTOM-UP APPROACH TO CULTURE Cheong, Weiyang Samuel Published online: 20 February 2021 ABSTRACT This study aims to critically evaluate James Hunter’s key proposal for religio-cultural engagement in his book entitled, To Change the World (2010). Drawing on his expertise in sociology, Hunter argues for an exclusively top-down approach to cultural change. He asserts that the “work of world-making and world- changing are, by and large, the work of elite: gatekeepers who provide creative direction and management within spheres of social life” (Hunter 2010, 41). However, such an approach has the shortcoming of serving the needs of cultural elites and ignoring the needs and concerns of the people living at the grassroots level. By making use of the Asian cultural context— Minjung theology in Korea and the Chinese Pentecostal grassroots movement, this study pushes back against Hunter’s key idea. It proposes that the best approach to Christian cultural change is through a top-down/bottom-up method that engages and contextualizes religion and culture in the public sphere. Introduction In his book, To Change the World, Hunter (2010, 6) displaces the implicit Christian understanding that “the essence of culture is found in the hearts and minds of individuals” and that cultural change happens as individual lives are transformed. He argues that this view is fundamentally wrong. Instead, he introduces four propositions for cultural change with the central assertion being that “cultures change from the top-down and rarely, if ever from the bottom-up.” He continues by saying it is “by and large the work of elite gatekeepers that will provide creative direction and management within the spheres of social life” (Hunter 2010, 41).
