I am delighted to present you with this informative, colorful, and cutting-edge online magazine that includes over 50 contributions from colleagues living and working in ten different countries! Last year, members of the AMTA Early Childhood Network were exploring opportunities to further develop the previous early imagine, Editor childhood newsletter to better serve our readers and the demands of Dr. Petra Kern, MT-DMtG, MT-BC, a growing field. In particular, it was clear that dissemination of the MTA, NICU-MT latest research, trends, practice standards, and policies affecting music therapists was critical. In order to enact authentic, evidence-based, client-centered practice, early childhood music therapists need a professional, reliable and engaging source of both information and inspiration. Having this in mind, we set the following goals for imagine: • to offer a clinical publication forum for practicing music therapists working with young children, ages zero to five, • to distribute current knowledge and information about early childhood music therapy inside and outside the profession in clinical terms, and • to improve access to knowledge and information about early childhood music therapy worldwide. Recognizing the innovative and creative nature of early childhood music therapy, and also desiring to make worldwide connections, we felt that the best way to accomplish these goals was to offer an online multimedia publication including text, images, hyperlinks, audio and video clips. All articles have an interactive digital viewing mode allowing readers to turn pages like a hard copy magazine, adjust the size of the document, search for content, email the text to colleagues, link the text to websites and social network pages, and look for related articles. All of these features allow readers to access and view the work of colleagues not only in a more comprehensive and lively way, but also across borders! Before market researchers declared music an influencer of atmospheric perception, sociologists discovered the sway of music on crowd collective action in sporting events, political rallies, and societal unrest. There remains a lack of research on how live music may influence football fan behavior during a game. Therefore, this study observed the number of behavioral responses from university students elicited by a university marching band’s music prompts (N = 11) at an American university football game.

Hogue 79 Pages Hogue (2013) tested some of Levinson's (1997) theoretical ideas about why people like listening to songs that make them sad. Particularly, Hogue tested Levinson's ideas of communion, mediation, savoring feeling, and how absorption interacted with the songs to affect communion and the emotion. Hogue, however, did not use musical stimuli that were familiar to the participants, which is a precursor to Levinson's (1997) theory. This thesis retested Levinson's theory comparing familiar songs against unfamiliar songs and songs from another participant. Data were collected from 82 participants. Each participant provided songs that induced happiness and songs that induced sadness.

The study was divided into three phases. In Phase One, university choir singers (N = 21) viewed eight audiovisual pairings (two film excerpts and four choral etudes) and rated these pairings according to perceived music to film congruency. Based on these ratings, two choral etudes were identified that elicited the broadest congruency contrasts when paired with the film segments. In Phase Two, a different group of university choir singers (N = 116) rehearsed and prepared both of the selected choral etudes referred to as “Doh” and “Noo.” Subsequently, these singers were organized into smaller chamber ensembles (n = 11), and performed each choral etude three times under the following conditions: (1) while viewing congruent film, (2) while viewing incongruent film, and (3) with no film projected. After each performance, singers reported their level of self-expression. At the completion of all three performances, singers reported their preferred performance condition.

Music is also used to enhance sports performance. In this thesis, I examined the role of relaxing and arousing music during imagery on subsequent sports performance in three linked studies. The purpose of Study 1 was to investigate the effects of relaxing and arousing music on physiological indicators of arousal level and subjective psychological perception of arousal during imagery of a sport task. First, appropriate music excerpts were selected with the involvement of professional musicians, sport psychologists, and sport science students. They selected three unfamiliar relaxing music (URM) excerpts, three unfamiliar arousing music (UAM) excerpts, and three familiar arousing music (FAM) excerpts from 90 pre-selected classical music excerpts generated in an initial search for use with imagery. In this study, unfamiliar music excerpts were chosen to minimise the confounding effects of individual past associations which affect arousal level in unpredictable ways.

Music videos are peculiar creatures – two-headed beasts with one head focused on selling a musical act and the other distracted by the artistry of sculpting visuals to audio. This dichotomy is jumbled further by music videos created not just to promote a product but to be the product itself. While compiling the list of music videos for this special collection, I began to wonder which of these visual treasures were made with which of those two heads. With all the marketing blockbusters and the abstract “art” videos out there, what I wanted to see was a collection of clips that fit into both categories; the chart-topping stars who choose the visually risky route despite their rank in a money-means-everything industry, and the obscure group who launches themselves toward stardom aboard a breakout marketing tool.
