Abstract Visual Kei is a musical scene born at and almost exclusive of Japan, its main characteristic being that the visual or aesthetic component is as important as the musical one. It’s a very active scene with great variety both musical and aesthetic. In this paper we analise Visual Kei as a cultural product, following a historic structure. Starting from the musical and cultural movements that contributed to its emergence such as heavy metal, glam or punk. Observing the scene that would be Visual Kei’s breeding ground until its proper birth. And watching the keys to each stage of its evolution from the 90s until now. In addition, we observe which has been the impact of Visual Kei in Japanese popular culture, as well as how has it been received in the rest of the world.

Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Japanskt mál og menning Fashion Subcultures in Japan A multilayered history of street fashion in Japan Ritgerð til BA-prófs í japönsku máli og menningu Inga Guðlaug Valdimarsdóttir Kt: 0809883039 Leðbeinandi: Gunnella Þorkellsdóttir September 2015 1 Abstract This thesis discusses the history of the street fashion styles and its accompanying cultures that are to be found on the streets of Japan, focusing on the two most well- known places in Tokyo, namely Harajuku and Shibuya, as well as examining if the economic turmoil in Japan in the 1990s had any effect on the Japanese street fashion. The thesis also discusses youth cultures, not only those in Japan, but also in North- America, Europe, and elsewhere in the world; as well as discussing the theories that exist on the relation of fashion and economy of the Western world, namely in North- America and Europe. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the possible causes of why and how the Japanese street fashion scene came to be into what it is known for today: colorful, demiurgic, and most of all, seemingly outlandish to the viewer; whilst using Japanese society and culture as a reference. Moreover, the history of certain street fashion styles of Tokyo is to be examined in this thesis. The first chapter examines and discusses youth and subcultures in the world, mentioning few examples of the various subcultures that existed, as well as introducing the Japanese school uniforms and the culture behind them. The second chapter addresses how both fashion and economy influence each other, and how the fashion in Japan was before its economic crisis in 1991.

The Christian Year in Review Significant Events of 1995 Brendan Kelleher, svo JANUARY 2 The Salvation Army marked their Centennial Opening Campaign with a gathering in Ueno Park, Tokyo. With their usual mixture of music and song they sought to share the Gospel message with passers-by. The results of the Salvation Army's annual end of the year Community Chest collection were not given in the 1996 edi tion of the Kiristokyo Nenkan. 10 Cardinal Kim Su Han, Archbishop of Seoul, sent a letter to Prime Minister Murayama Tomoichi of Japan, calling for a full and formal investigation of the "Comfort Women" issue, to be followed by a formal apology and appropriate repa rations made to the victims. • TRANSCULTURAL SPACES in SUBCULTURE: an Examination of Multicultural Dynamics in the Japanese Visual Kei Movement
TRANSCULTURAL SPACES IN SUBCULTURE: An examination of multicultural dynamics in the Japanese visual kei movement Hayley Maxime Bhola 5615A031-9 January 10, 2017 A master’s thesis submitted to the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies Waseda University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts TRANSCULTURAL SPACES IN SUBCULTURE 2 Abstract of the Dissertation The purpose of this dissertation was to examine Japanese visual kei subculture through the theoretical lens of transculturation. Visual kei (ヴィジュアル系) is a music based subculture that formed in the late 1980’s in Japan with bands like X Japan, COLOR and Glay. Bands are recognized by their flamboyant (often androgynous appearances) as well as their theatrical per- formances. Transculturation is a term originally coined by ethnographer Fernando Ortiz in re- sponse to the cultural exchange that took place during the era of colonization in Cuba. It de- scribes the process of cultural exchange in a way that implies mutual action and a more even dis- tribution of power and control over the process itself. This thesis looked at transculturation as it relates to visual kei in two main parts. The first was expositional: looking at visual kei and the musicians that fall under the genre as a product of transculturation between Japanese and non- Japanese culture. The second part was an effort to label visual kei as a transcultural space that is able to continue the process of transculturation by fostering cultural exchange and development among members within the subculture in Japan. Chapter 1 gave a brief overview of the thesis and explains the motivation behind conduct- ing the research.
