The Culmination of Tradition-based Tafsīr The Qurʼān Exegesis al-Durr al-manthūr of al-Suyūṭī (d. 911/1505) by Shabir Ally A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto © Copyright by Shabir Ally 2012 The Culmination of Tradition-based Tafsīr The Qurʼān Exegesis al-Durr al-manthūr of al-Suyūṭī (d. 911/1505) Shabir Ally Doctor of Philosophy Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto 2012 Abstract This is a study of Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī’s al-Durr al-manthūr fi-l-tafsīr bi-l- ma’thur (The scattered pearls of tradition-based exegesis), hereinafter al-Durr. In the present study, the distinctiveness of al-Durr becomes evident in comparison with the tafsīrs of al- a arī (d. 310/923) and I n Kathīr (d. 774/1373). Al-Suyūṭī surpassed these exegetes by relying entirely on ḥadīth (tradition). Al-Suyūṭī rarely offers a comment of his own. Thus, in terms of its formal features, al-Durr is the culmination of tradition- based exegesis (tafsīr bi-l-ma’thūr). This study also shows that al-Suyūṭī intended in al-Durr to subtly challenge the tradition- ased hermeneutics of I n Taymīyah (d. 728/1328). According to Ibn Taymīyah, the true, unified, interpretation of the Qurʼān must be sought in the Qurʼān ii itself, in the traditions of Muḥammad, and in the exegeses of the earliest Muslims. Moreover, I n Taymīyah strongly denounced opinion-based exegesis (tafsīr bi-l-ra’y). -

ABSTRACT Kamataka is a standout amongst the most imperative southern conditions of India. It has picked up conspicuousness politically, socio-monetarily, logically and in numerous other ways. It is a gathering spot of numerous religious rationalities and a liquefying point accomplishing the amalgamation of the instructing of numerous religious changes. Sufism is a spiritualist religion. It is a branch of Islam. Sufi holy people are the devotees of ALLAH and the act of harmony, consideration and resistance. They declared a religion dependent on the idea of affection, the adoration with the individual being and the love with a definitive or the maker. Sufi holy people and Sufism are a current reality in Indian socio-religious overlap and it has contributed for a solid and neighborly social request. It has prompt another social set-up brimming with qualities, and control. Sufism as a religion of the joining millions turned into the rehearsing framework among the general population of India and in addition Karnataka. This investigation of Sufi Saints in Karnataka is accordingly a propelled endeavor to depict this religion of the spirit and heart. Subramon Associate Professor and Head Department of English (Autonomous) Madurai, India [email protected] Abstract Sufism entered the Indian subcontinent in the twelfth century as a new socio religious force. Within a short period, it mushroomed to different parts of India. Fro Punjab to Rajputana, from Jammu and Kashmir to Kerala, sufism influenced the life and thought of the people. Though on the eve of its advent, Muslim population in most parts of India was virtually negligible, yet the sufis hardly faced any local resistance to their activities. Sufism reviewed enthusiastic social response. It adjusted itself with the indigenous cultural modes in a smooth manner. As a result, it became a catalyst in shaping and consolidating the Indian regional identities from the thirteenth century onwards. In this context, sufi shrines of the different regions-Ajodhan, Sirhins, Delhi, Ajmer and Gulbarga – played a significant role. For example, Richard Maxwell Eaton has shown that the sufis of Bijapur contributed tremendously to the promotion of vernacular idiom and Dakhani language. For final form, see: Ecclesial Practices 3.2 (2016), 190-209] The state of ‘interfaith dialogue’ in the contemporary global context is ambiguous at best. Once-celebrated liberal notions that resourced such conversations, such as ‘pluralism’ and ‘tolerance’,1 are now frequently criticised.2 In related fashion, considerable scepticism has emerged in the academy over the appropriateness of employing the category ‘religion’ to refer to a universal genus, of which all the world religions are a particular instantiation.3 When it comes to the practice of interfaith dialogue, although the ‘Scriptural Reasoning’ movement (the collaborative reading by Christians, Jews and Muslims of each other’s sacred texts) has borne fruit, the method is generally limited to intellectuals in university contexts, and thus does not tend to penetrate very deeply to the level of congregational life or general public discourse.4 The same is true of the emerging sub-discipline of ‘comparative theology’.5 Such actualities challenge the often unquestioned assumption that the preeminent model for interfaith relationships should be that of a ‘dialogue’. 1 Some classic Christian texts include: John Hick & Paul F. Focusing on the traditionalist theological and jurisprudential thought of the Ḥanbalī intellectuals Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728/1328) and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (also known as Ibn al-Qayyim) (d. 751/1350) this study traces the way in which these two scholars developed a critique of the dominant theological- jurisprudential tradition of their day, which was influenced by dialectical theology. Against the dialectical theologians, Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim argued that an authentically fideist, consistent and rational theory of Islamic law could only emerge from an acceptance of the reality of God’s voluntary attributes. The study situates these debates on the influence of theology on law and legal theory in Islamic history within an overall account of the influence of iii theology on modern Anglo-American law and secularism. It concludes by remarking upon the ways in which classical discussions on the relationship between Islamic theology and legal theory have been appropriated and utilized in the modern period to ground disparate theories of Islamic legal reform, ranging from Islamic secularism and liberalism to neo-traditionalism. -

I have been concerned to study the responses of Indian sufism to the growth of the colonial state, which established new forms of knowledge and new forms of order, and to the emergence of Muslim movements of revival and reform, which saw, and still see, sufism as inimical to the capacity of Muslims to sustain an Islamic society. It is a context more hostile for sufism than ever experienced before. I have approached the problem by examining the responses of three working spiritual traditions in nineteenth and twentieth century India. -

TARIQ AHMED CENTRE OF ADVANCED STUDY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH-202002 (INDIA) 2012 ABSTRACT Scope of the work: This thesis studies the emergence of Muslim culture in the medieval Deccan with a particular focus on the impact of various Sufi orders. It charts their spread in the Deccan, studies the establishment of khanqahs in various cities and analyses the attitude of different orders vis-a-vis the medieval ruling elite. The study takes into account a broad time-span which begins with the foundation of the Bahmani kingdom in 1347, covers the period of the succession states that emerged on the debris of the Bahmani kingdom, and ends with the disintegration and Mughal conquest of the last surviving independent kingdoms of Bijapur and Golconda in 1686 and 1687 respectively. In this long time-span the thesis notices the flowering of several Sufi orders: some major orders such as the Chishtis and the Qadiris, and also those who had a comparatively limited popularity in the Deccan such as Shattaris, Junaidis, Nimatullahis and Naqshbandis. All these orders had slight differences in their trajectories of thought and in their stance towards the temporal authorities. The study of these differences remains the main focus of my study. The region of Deccan became a fertile ground for mystics even before the Muslim political annexation began, and the process received an impetus during the Tughlaq period. -
